Yes, the data discs were a neat concept, and gave the player extra incentive to play through the game with both characters. They included every single classic character, even the Genesis and Game Boy-exclusive bosses.

The data disc concept was taken further in the Zero and ZX series, where you can find data disks of common enemies, friendly NPC's, etc.

They should make Link trans. We need more trans characters in games. Samus and Sypha are nice, but there hasn't been a new trans character in the mainstream since like... forevs.
