As someone who played and finished Fallout 2 a year ago for the first time, I can say this without being nostalgia backing me up.

Fallout 2 is an improvement over Fallout, but still retains the problems it had with the first game, such as horrible slow starts, and the first 20 fights or so will be long, difficult and unlucky. Although, it does start off better, and the journey you take is much more interesting, the weapons you can obtain near the beginning are interesting, and depending on what you work on, can give you a much better game.

The companions are much better too, I never liked Ian mostly because he was weak and would fuck me up half the time. But in Fallout 2, you could have about 4 companions at a time, and since they pretty much double your firepower a lot of the fights become easier than they usually are.

Although, my only problem with Fallout 2 is that once you do the brotherhood mission about the Enclave, you get to the base, steal all their armour and weapons, and then finish the mission, and get fuck loads of armour and weapons from the brotherhood as well as 40000 exp to boot, after this part of the game, it becomes ridiculously easy to play, and kind of ruins the game in a way. I didn't mind though, since I loved having a lot of shit to use, although it become annoying since I had about 50 weapons I didn't use taking up space, and I didn't need anything, so selling them would have been useless, so I just stored them away, oh and the fact that the quests never tell you where to go, or what to do, so you might be using a guide once in a while.

Fallout 2 is a fun game if you like SRPG's in a way, it's fun, but can be frustration especially playing it on PC's these days since you have to download mods to make the game work in widescreen and not 640x480 or whatever ridiculous resolution it is. If you want to play it go for it, but don't give up after a few missions or so, I hated it at first, but it grew on me.
