Doom and Doom 2 was developed by the original iD guys, Doom 64 was developed by a Midway team, TNT was developed by modders who got their project snapped up by iD for commercial release, under the condition that they'd deliver another megawad, Plutonia, for the Final Doom package, and Doom 4 and Eternal are developed by a basically all new team in iD.

There's a lot of different developers with different intents and perspectives and what not, personally I headcannon it as:
>Classic; Doom and Doom 2, they connect clearly, then you have the bonus episodes potentially fitting in, and the possible branchings off and inbetweens and suggested sequels you get with Final Doom and whatever pwads, basically as a set of timelines
>Doom 3 clearly tries to do its own thing, it's obviously not a real sequel to Doom 2
>Doom 64, which was adapted into a bridge to Doom 4 and Doom Eternal, this is a special timeline where Doomguy stays in hell and then eventually grows to become the Doomslayer, who clearly is no longer a mortal human like in the other games, instead he has become some kind of ageless demigod (potentially appointed by God) who's calling is defend mankind from the violations of hell
I think that with Doom 64 clearly being used as a starting point, and with the new Doom games having such a different style, tone, and setting, it doesn't belong properly with the classic games, it makes more sense for me that it's separate.

Anyway, to make sure this isn't a waste of the thread's post count, here's Duke Nukem 3D's cover art.

I meant to a point.

If you look at Duke 3D, it has -some- level of realism, it's way more realistic than Doom for instance, but it's still pretty absurd in it's own way.

I guess you can do that with some kind of magic weapon, or some kind of energy weapon which has different ways to put out energy.
