DC1 is the best AITD/RE style survival horror. Maybe not in terms of atmosphere/horror, but it at least in terms of survival gameplay: survival action, puzzles, ressource management, exploration, different endings etc

it is the gameplay epitome of that style

Also gotta love how much the extra difficulties mode change the game; on very hard you actually get to kill things; but I don't think the original PS1 version has that difficulty, iirc it's only Dreamcast/PC, which is the versions you should be playing anyway
