no wait, fuck
that wasn't the wizard, I'll be fighting him now

aw fuck man, I'll be toasted without magic here

HAHA YES I just killed the wizard

...yeah, I know the dragon is coming up, and he's probably a huge motherfucker because the game blacked out the background to make space. I'm afraid to unpause now. If I die, I won't have enough magic for a second try even though I still have two spare credits.

I restarted like five times since last post I think.

Final stage is a go. Four credits left.
According to the manual, I'm going to face two minibosses, the wizard himself and the dragon he's the bitch of.
Judging by the relative difficulty of dragons and wizards so far, this should be easy.

Pretty good progress so far. I just entered stage 6 out of 7, and I'm pretty sure that I can breeze through the game until this point on one life.

Some recap:

Stage 3 was piss easy once I realized that crouching near Death is a safe zone, since it blocks low hits and lets high hits go over.
Stage 4 had some bullshit platforming but it's possible to despawn the eyes. The gargoyle was easy as fuck. The bomb spell he drops insta-kills him in the next stage.
Stage 5 is laughably easy. Got through it on the first try. Just like stage 3, it's a boss rush - death, gargoyle and some guy with a mace. The boss was a dragon, but it was easier than the enemies in the stage itself.

The mage staff was useless at first but it's overpowered now.
I still can't reliably double jump for shit. The timing is bullshit, it's literally one frame.

Oh, it worked. Apparently the shield's hitbox is a bit off to the left, so you end up blocking with your head. Now that it's out of the way, I can keep enough health for Death. (who looks nothing like Death outside of the manual)

Dodging seems safer so far except for the mages.

>the wizard's angled fireballs
Just checked, it doesn't seem like magic can be blocked at all or the timing/position window is really tight.
Overall, the combat feels like Zelda 2 on crack.

>You can block. Just duck.
Doesn't do shit. Manual says that pressing up will raise the shield though so that might work.
And if having actual layers on the NES isn't impressive, then I don't know what is.

I'm already reading it but thanks.

Jesus fuck dat TECHNOLOGY.
This may not be the best game out there, but damn, it's juicy.

A couple observations from playing the first few levels...

The game is a beat em up with a simple leveling system and pretty tight controls. The AI is sometimes unfair as fuck and the fact that you can't block like they do (despite having a shield) adds insult to injury, but it's bearable overall.

You get five credits, and no extends. Death also takes you back to the beginning of the stage. This forces you to play the game through mostly without dying, however you get to keep your experience even after being booted to the title screen.

As I said, the visuals are juicy as fuck. They somehow managed to render the background in layers (yes I said layers, not just scanline scrolling), and there's no sprite flicker present anywhere. Many sound effects are PCMs. Yet, the game's cartridge is only 256k. I don't know which mapper is it running on but it's used well. It's literally one of those "looking better than the hardware allows" games you hear of in creepy stories.

Ha ha, I'm back home, with an actual name, and it's time to restart the NES.
Surely I won't roll a racing game with zero visibility this time, right?
Right...?

damn that's one generic name
but at least it ain't racing
