The rule has always been that codes the game gives you in-game, or in the manual, are okay. Exceptions have generally been made for the Tyson code and the Adventure Island continue code.

It's generally considered acceptable, but is up to you. A good rule of thumb: if you can consistently beat the guy before him, then yes. If you barely squeak through? No.

Fix that aspect ratio, friend.

It's a simple matter of the concept being interesting enough to make many want to try, but long-term only attracts a very small number who are happy to carry on their own if the threads die. The concept of the gauntlet is fundamentally flawed, and was almost addressed by another thread that tried to become regular: group play.

The system I and my friends use is simple: once a week a game is selected, and everyone has one week to beat it. You can play for fun (not interested in competing/already eliminated), for victory (to advance to the next round) or for glory (bonus objectives, like high scores or 100% completion). You'd need to have a sign up at the beginning of each gauntlet, track eliminations and have everyone strap a trip on. Some people would cheat; that's inevitable. But it will foster the the thread by providing a weekly common ground. No list pruning needed, because bullshit games are more fun when you have someone you can bitch about them with.

Someone would have to step up and be the organizer. s3krit is the obvious choice, if he's still around.

That's the other, dirty side to the gauntlet: the thread is often just a bunch of people yelling their progress into the thread, with little actual discussion, due either to lack of interest or familiarity. Half the time it's just people describing the game. It's mildly interesting, but rarely conducive. When I used to run it on /vr/, I made gifs of end bosses and victories, along with mosaics. People seemed to like that. Encouraging webms of gameplay and including a guide to making them would help more than most other options.

Hardcore's making fun of casuals, casuals making fun of purists, and just splitting the population in general. It's not hard to imagine the hardcore players referring to their list as the true gauntlet.

None if this is my concern, really; I just do a private gauntlet these days with friends. Making this week's prize as I type, actually.

Splitting the base isn't a good idea. You're just asking for people to start trolling then.

Easy game, but fun. Kind of a JRPG training wheels game.

Crystal Mines, checking back in. I'm... kind of getting the hang of things. Full disclosure: I'm using the level select option (press a or b on the level screen) for continuation purposes.

Basically, this game has 100 levels with death around every corner, 5 lives and three normal continues. I'm sure it's possible to beat it without using the level select trick (press a or b on the first level screen to go up/down 5 levels), but it would take a very long time playing this game to do so.

Basically, I'm fighting my way through 5 levels at a time. The final twenty have to be done in one miserable stretch, however.

Just... fucking Crystal Mines. I hate excavation puzzlers, and this one is even more punishing than they usually are. There's a trick you can use to semi-continue every 5 levels, but the final 20 - there's 100 - have to be done in one shot.

When did gauntlet threads get so slow? Finished Bomberman, with a fairly punishing high score for the next anon to beat.

The Noah bit is surprisingly fun.

Also, jesus christ, never bomb the door in Bomberman.

Bomberman! I've never actually played the original.

Look how fucking dynamic he looks here. I know a lot of people slam the Bomberman Zero redesigns, but looking at this, it seems like it has some basis.
