Okay the other 14L5 is fucked too and low and behold, the mounting bracket for the power supply is cracking too. I'm betting this one's power supply is even more fucked, so it's time to buy a kit and a new bracket and try to bring one or the other back to life. It'll be a long term project.

Oh hey, the bracket is still for sale from Sony's parts partners...

Forgot pic of busted bracket. It just kept snapping into little bits at every stress joint. It makes sense though, considering all the fractures were right next to the huge heatsink.

I have a spare 14L5 power supply now. Anyone interested? Kidding actually. I'm going to see if someone can 3D print a replacement.

Heat and age has not been kind to this monitor's power supply retention bracket. Thanks for the cheap plastic, Sony.

And one more thing: enabling underscan makes the display go wild. So yeah, there's something fishy in this monitor. Gonna go on n adventure to try and figure it out.

I should probably post a picture.

Okay so of the two PVM 14L5s I got from work, one is okay and the other has this wiggling issue in both composite and RGB input. My first hope is power and he second is a nebulous "random component past all processing" is going out. Anyone got suggestions?

Downsampling is always fun, but there's a limit to your CRT's ability to resolve horizontal resolution.

Matt C is too, and is on the Rebel FM podcast with some Polygon shitheads.

Probably. The Area5 folks are very much a part of the Bay Area gaming justice cult. One whole episode of Outerlands is going to be about Anita, as if she's an important figure. Fucking stupid, though I take solace in the fact that they seem to have flubbed the delivery of anything to their backers for two years.

From all the cathode rays bro. I get my face way too close to the screen when working on focus.

It's gonna suck, but at least I'll have something to point at when I'm dying from radiation poisoning and say "I made that shit."

God yes. I've also been planning with a friend of mine who went to film school to produce a short documentary about CRTs. If you've seen an Outerlands short, it might be like that if we can get it off the ground. Except with less San Fran hipsters, shitty feminists and more fat nerds talking shit about monitors.

the gwscart switch is nice and yeah expensive but why not just use an Extron crosspoint or something? I have some extra RGB BNC matrix switchers coming my way next month.

I had terms on my outs and still had weird issues when switching to full 100ire white screens on composite. Problem corrected itself after warming up and also me tweaking the screen pot on the flyback.

Which consoles? Most are not that expensive.

Good luck. You're better off replacing the tube if the electronics are good. Get the tube from a set with fried boards and make the world a better place.

Yeah I agree with your entire post. Everyone and their brother in the broadcast biz has stories of Sony gear, but less widespread are Ikegami wizards. I've only ever owned this one. I just spent an hour fucking with the flyback and neckboard focus then correcting the chroma/huehuehue/brightness/contrast presets for composite and RGB colorbars. It's going back into the storage unit now for another few months/years. Not selling it until I can find another with more features.

Fuck yeah the pots are all so clearly labeled it's great. It's also super obvious where the RGB signals are coming from so the signal path is traceable as fuck.

My Ikegami is so empty inside compared to every Sony I've ever owned. It's kinda nice.

When it comes to composite input though, this Ikegami monitor I have seems to have all kinds of weird issues. Maybe it's just old. I need to take a look inside again tomorrow because it make some serious clicking when starting up.
