Yes, it's another what if thread. At least this one isn't (specifically) about how the Saturn/Dreamcast could've won - more like how that trainwreck would have done in an environment with less competition.
Let's say everything progresses as normal, except the PS1 just doesn't materialize after the fallout with Nintendo. So no SNES CD, the Saturn releases at the same time and as the same product that it did in reality, probably same-ish for the N64.
My guess is that it turns out similar to how the Genesis did, but with Nintendo in Sega's position - the N64 is huge in the US, Europe is split, Saturn is huge in Japan. The big thing that initially hit Nintendo with the PS1 was the mass exodus of Japanese devs from SFC to PS1 due to Sony being much easier to work with. The PS1 was probably favored over the Saturn due to technical superiority/less mismanagement/wads of cash from Sony, but without a PS1 I can see everyone flocking to the Saturn instead. Meanwhile the N64 is a hit in NA just like it was in reality, driven by Nintendo first/second-party and Western titles, but even bigger without the competition from the PS1. It could be one of the biggest gaps between mainstream console choice in NA vs JP in history, competing only with pre-NES and a certain not-retro period.
There's also the 3DO to consider. Would the PS1's absence give them time to sort themselves out, drop prices and have a shot at being a real contender?

I'm writing a small story regarding the turning of century in Japan (1999 to 2000) and I would like to know if you guys think it would be realistic for a character to have a Sega Saturn and be excited to have a Dreamcast.

This neat tidbit of more recent (as in post Dreamcast) history, came from a Japanese Interview with two former hardware Sega engineers that were involved with the Sega Saturn

https://note.com/beep21/n/n0f7ca2dc6f32

If you look at the videos of the pachislot of the first generation which came out in 2003, you can tell it is pretty much Dreamcast graphics:

The money ranked up by FOTNS pachinko and pachislot as of 2020 is over 10 billion dollars.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x6hej6BBpNg&t=4s&ab_channel=%E3%83%91%E3%83%81%E3%83%B3%E3%82%B3%E3%83%BB%E3%83%91%E3%83%81%E3%82%B9%E3%83%AD%E5%BF%85%E5%8B%9D%E3%82%AC%E3%82%A4%E3%83%89%E3%83%81%E3%83%A3%E3%83%B3%E3%83%8D%E3%83%AB

Of course Sega used its Dreamcast parts up until 2009 for minor arcade games (after attempting to explore alot of other avenues including Xbox backwards compatibility and non-gaming related things), including lucrative kids card arcade games in Japan. But the main money maker for them for sure were those pachi games, and it's nice to know that it isn't completely divorced from Sega history. Its these profits that made Sega continue, including making company acquisitions that happened right after, including Creative Assembly in 2005 and Sports Interactive 2006.

Why is PlayStation so bad? Even when it first came out I remember it being buggy crap with loading screens every time you do anything with it. Were CDs a mistake?

>Retarded retro /v/ faggots cannot bear the fact of calling the dreamcast (24years old now) a retro console

Dreamcast

Gamecube
>it was actually the best of its gen but everyone was too edgy and retarded or brainwashed to see that it doesn't suck because Nintendo wasnt le edgy but also it had DARK games for ADULTS that mostly ended up on PS2 anyway a-and *cope hits bump limit*
I'd say it's neck-and-neck between Sega Saturn and Gamecube.

An interesting and mostly objective take from Sega Lord X (from my favorite gaming YouTubers) regarding the hostility between Sega of America and Sega of Japan.

Also I should personally add that many western Sega fanboys (the ones that still have the same immature mentality they had during Sega - Nintendo console wars) still side with Sega of America just because they popularized Mega Drive in the west while Sega of America was responsible for making so many crappy games and therefore making customers losing their faith to Sega consoles (even with Dreamcast that had great third company support and strong advertisement worldwide ). And think about it, Sega's dominance at the Western market thanks to Mega Drive didn't lasted for long, especially with Donkey Kong Country's success at SNES along with other gems like Yoshi's Island and Killer Instinct that kept SNES alive and popular even with Playstation and Saturn's launch.

And let's not forget about Bernard Stolar, the asshole responsible for the "no rpgs" and "no 2d games" policies at Playstation 1 (thank goodness for Final Fantasy 7 and Pokemon popularizing jrpgs in the west even if I'm not fan of FF7 and FF series) and responsible for not bringing most of the best Japanese Saturn games in the west.
