>what were they thinking
"We want to make real games instead of blindly throwing 3d at everything even if it would make the game shit", maybe?

And then Nintendo went to shit with fucking 3d Mario. Fuck that overhyped, paid-off reviews shit and its bad controls and abysmal camera.

Here, kid. Have a review from a reviewer who WASN'T paid off by Nintendo.

Play the game and open your goddamn eyes. Controls are wanky as living fuck and the camera is 100% shit.

Platformers don't work in 3d, period.

You can bitch and cry about this statement and offer up BUT MAH MARIO 64 all you want, it doesn't change the facts. Mario 64 was an overhyped, carefully marketed game with paid for reviews that fooled the new gaming generation that signed on to gaming in the mid-90s with no context about how gaming was supposed to be, made to think a game you had to memorize quirks of (which is what Mario 64, at its core, really is) is actually good, when it's really not. Old Mario games were playable by reacting to what came up, as you had a definite feel of what every action you did was going to do, even in a new situation, instead of having some spastic 3d camera with a quirky, imprecise controller making every single new situation impossible to accurately predict.

3d platformers were a horrible mistake, and are one of the many reasons the mid-90s was the downfall of gaming, and why /vr/ should be pre-1995 only.

Mario 64 killed it by being complete and total shit; unfortunately Nintendo knew it was shit because it was rushed in development after having to convert it to a real 3d game because of Sony's bullshit and countered by marketing the living shit out of it to non-gamers that didn't know any better and paid off reviewers to gush about the pile of shit.

Because people are dumb. Crash is far from perfect but holy hell, it's better than that pile of trash Mario 64.

So you're admitting SM64 is a fucking crazyass version of Dragon's Lair?

Thanks, I'll stick to games where I have to rely on skill and adapting to upcoming situations given known, sane control reactions rather than memorizing which random direction the camera spins at X point in a run.

Um, EVERY MARIO GAME BEFORE 64?!?! MAYBE?

Jesus, children. You sure are sensitive about your fucking first game ever. Please just let go and admit it's garbage.

Because retro gaming specifically is more about an era of gaming than "mah childhood."

Gaming went to shit in the mid-90s thanks to the gaming industry going after casual non-gamers and making lazy games with no depth and shit controls and gameplay. Honestly, /vr/ should be pre-1995 only.

You little shits and your Mario 64 and MGS1 garbage should be on /v/.

Gaming was dead by then anyway. The N64 generation destroyed gaming.

Which is why /vr/ should be pre-1995.

I really hope one day millennials will understand this basic truth about gaming. They were so brainwashed by the fucking mid-90s casual gaming push as an excuse to make subpar games with style-over-substance bullshit to rake in more money, though, so it'll probably never happen.

Your homework tonight, kids: realize that Mario 64 was garbage.

I still think it's one of the worst games made. Being one of the first 3d platform games doesn't excuse poor controls and lousy cameras.

Sure, you can get "good" at the game, but I could get good at any poorly designed game by being stubborn and playing it to the point where I memorize how the game reacts at all times.

You really think anyone in gaming besides people like me that don't give a fuck about what other people think are going to say anything bad about SM64?

Honestly, go load up this game and see how many terribly bad things there are about this fucking game by slowly and objectively analyzing game movement and interactions.
