Also, ever notice how when Square retconned the reactor explosion into primarily being the work of President Shinra in the remake, and that none of the complaints -- which are few in number to begin with -- of them doing this bring up how it negatively affects future events of the plot? Because it doesn't! President Shinra being the one to actually kill all those civilians and blaming it on Avalanche changes nothing about the game! Nobody in the original held any vendetta against Avalanche for their murder of civilians, nor any of their other terroristic activities.

Even the Shinra execs are only mad at the group for trying to stop their planet-killing energy harvest. Not for any of the tactics they use, seeing as how even in the original game, Shinra already had no qualms about murdering what must've been at least several hundred thousand people and destroying an eighth of their own city and blaming it on Avalanche as a false-flag op. Even Yeltsin and Putin only killed a few hundred Russian slumdwellers in his false flag to start his war on Chechnya.

Also, some false flag op! Avalanche faces zero consequences for being branded the worst mass-murdering terrorists to ever live. They travel the planet no more molested than they would've been had they not been framed for the massacre. I guess not even the FFVII NPCs are stupid enough to believe it wasn't the work of Shinra, but it doesn't affect anything else either, because no one shows any concern that their corporate dictators just murdered an eighth of the population of Midgar to kill a terrorist cell consisting of half a dozen people. Anything even close to that bad happening in real life causes a refugee crisis, but the Square writers are hacks who don't understand human behavior, so a terrorist attack orders of magnitude worse than 9/11 is utterly glossed over.

I'll give my reasoning. IMO:
FFVI—Some say it's near life-changing genius game, basically same level as FFVII (which is ridiculous). It starts off good, but gets pretty boring after a while. Tons of characters, but 80-90% of them no one cares about. Tons of gimmick gameplay mechanics because muh number of characters.
Earthbound—it gets praise for its unique atmosphere, which it has rightfully earned. However, underneath it, it's a rather mediocre babby's first RPG that really jumps the shark after the first half. EB is a great concept on paper, but actually playing it can be a chore.
>>10027684
>SMW
Overrated, but only slightly so. It's no SMB3, but it's still 100% worthy of playing.
>>10027697
>lttp
Yes and no. Good game, just sick of tendies like Fagoraptor pretending it was the second coming of Jesus.
>>10027701
>KDL
KDL3 is overhated. It has great graphics and great co-op. It's just a chill Kirby game
>>10027709
>Castlevania IV
Yes, but it doesn't have that huge of a rep. SotN is more overrated
>>10027710
>Chrono trigger
Kind of. Not bad, just "babby's first" all the way. The plot is surprisingly dumb for something so ambitious, just dumb bitch being dumb bitch because she's dumb and a bitch. Muh 69 endings with 11 herbs and spices (that all tell the same story). Now, fellow /vr/edditors, let's all argue who's the best Dragon Ball reject sameface girl from Akira Toriyama (i.e. "discuss the game").
>>10027774
>I never liked Mega Man X
Maybe because you're a retarded faggot. MMX is THE best game on the platform, perfect control with the best level design in the series.
>>10027804
>Metroid
Like LTTP, it's very good, just not the second coming of Jesus. Goes to show that half the people who praise SM shit on Fusion—they're full of shit.
>>10027986
>Kirby Super Star
Agreed here. Heard all the hype, played it… It's just a Kirby game. Not more, no less. Surprisingly bland compared to later entries.
>Rock 'n Roll Racing
No one even plays it anymore

Because FFVII was making use of 3D graphics to appear far more cinematic than FFVI, and even most games at the time. Why would I cite FFVI? Its visual storytelling presentation for a 16-bit game was amazing, but couldn't really do the stuff FFVII was doing.
>>9924070
MGS is another good one. I have no idea how op thinks Half-Life, the game with no cutscenes at all, lead the way in games appearing "cinematic". If anything, Half-Life should be praised for being able to do story through gameplay, where you really never feel like you've left Gordon's viewpoint for a moment.

You're right on the first three, but the whole
> Plot full of anime cliches
thing is inaccurate. I will now explain why:

The only reason why FFVII feels like it's full of cliches is because every single fucking RPG that released for 20 years afterward took inspiration from it and blatantly copied aspects of its story or mechanics wholesale. In 1997 these were not cliches, they were all brand new ideas. If you didn't play it for the first time back in the late 90s or even early 2000s than you can never truly understand how groundbreaking it was when it originally released.

It's the same thing with games like Half Life 2 - if you played HL2 for the first time today you'd think it was full of stale cliches as well (physics puzzles, vehicle sections, interactive non-cutscene cutscenes, silent protagonist, etc) even though upon its release it was breaking new ground.

FFVII gets a lot of hype even now because it was such a different experience back then. Also because for a lot of people it was babby's first JRPG and most people over the age of 35 are blatant nostalgiafags, but still, you get the idea.

I'm kind of surprised a few things didn't make this list, and not even in the way the hipster posters in this thread are.

While FFVI is probably my favorite FF, I would've considered FFVII more worthy of its place due to FFVI's poor mechanics. FFVI's gameplay is so simplistic and easy that it actively drags down an otherwise great game while at least FFVII is a little more challenging and the materia system gives you more flexibility than the esper system.

RE4 is another one I'm surprised to see at the top of the list, not so much because I don't believe it's a great game, but because it doesn't quite rise to the level of the rest of the list and I assumed this board wouldn't gravitate towards a GCN/PS2 game due to it being a retro board. The rules may of changed, but I thought the average resident of /vr/ would've picked an older game over it.

Quake is another one I'm surprised to not see, I assume if someone's picking Doom they may decide there's enough overlap with Quake that they don't want to pick both, but I would've certainly put Quake over Half-Life. That said, Half-Life's mod scene is a little more varied than Quake, so I could see that being a point of decision for some.

I'm also surprised things like X-COM, Civilization, or Diablo II, all of which get semi-regular threads, aren't on the list or even close to making it.

I think MGS and FFVII are important for bringing deeper storytelling into video games. Mario obviously pioneered the platformer genre and Pong is commonly seen as the first true video game. Pac-Man and Street Fighter II were both some of the most popular arcade games of their time period. Halo really popularized online gaming and the FPS genre, same with Half-Life but moreso on PC than on consoles. I'm not sure how I would rank them but I would say they were all important for different reasons.

There's also games like Virtua Fighter and Tekken which started the 3D fighting game genre, Pokemon which kicked off an entire pop culture phenomenon, Sonic which kind of reinvented the platforming genre, Harvest Moon which was one of the first (good) virtual life/business simulation games, The Sims which did something similar but had wider mainstream appeal, plenty of others.

9. Final Fantasy VII
>popularized the turn-based RPG genre for the masses as well as AAA production values and cinematic storytelling, still an iconic game within its own sub-franchise
10. Half-Life
>evolved the FPS genre in terms of its narrative, pacing, and setpieces, further-popularized modding and creating an iconic sub-series in the form of Counter-Strike that remains one of the most popular in the genre today
11. Halo
>evolved the FPS genre for consoles by establishing many gameplay and control standards still in-place today, even if its franchise is a lot less-popular and relevant than it used to be
12. Ocarina of Time
>popularized lock-on camera targetting for 3D games and set many rules for level design in 3D action-adventure games still used today
13. Metal Gear Solid
>most of its accomplishments were already achieved by FFVII, though it still broke ground for in-engine storytelling and cinematic direction with its pacing and setpieces

amazingly based and bad ass. i was born i 86, which i think is the perfect age for a gamer. i was 3 when i got my NES and played the shit out of it. i was 11 when i got ffvii, just 1 or 2 years older or younger and it would not have hit the same. all of 6th grade i played golden eye with pals. i was in middle school when i got half-life and started online gaming with team fortress/counter-strike. PS2 came out my first year of high school, and yes, world of warcraft came out my freshman year of college when i was getting my own money and had lots of freedom.... if i was a zoomer or gen x-er i probably wouldnt even care about videogames, but all the genre defining games somehow released right when i was most primed for them.

FFVI, FFVII, Z:LTTP, Chrono Trigger, Ocarina, Majora's Mask, Half-Life, Super Metroid, the first Paper Mario

Not really talking perfect here but those games are probably the older titles that have meant the most to me. Might be kind of a normie list but they're all popular for a reason I'd like to think. I think its some combination of the soundtracks, story telling, world building or atmosphere. There are other games that are probably perfect for what they are, but I think I trend toward the 'epic' titles that instill some kind of awe or imagination, and make me feel alot.

>I'm of the impression that PC gaming was never really relevant until recently
That's not true in two major ways at once.

First, Apple, Amiga, MSX, and PC88/98 were tremendously important in shaping the history of video games. To list just a few major and influential games that originated on PCs: Zork, Ultima, Wizardry, Tetris, Sim City, Doom, Quake, Unreal, Half-Life, Warcraft and Starcraft, Diablo, Ultima Online, World of Warcraft, Crysis.

Second, nothing's changed recently. Playstation games being ported? They were always being ported: MGS had a PC port and so did MGS2, Silent Hill 2 and 3 had PC ports, FFVII and FFVIII had PC ports, Super Mario fucking Brothers had several PC ports, albeit all shitty, Mega Man had a port, Dragon Quest had PC ports in Japan etc. etc. Mortal Kombats, Street Fighters all had OC ports. Most Resident Evils had PC ports. Nothing new.

>and he was conscripted into a military academy
The game doesn't seem to treat this as a bad thing though. FFVIII is obviously a terrible dystopia if you really analyze it (possibly worse than even FFVII) but it goes out of its way to paint the world of the gardens as generally happy. Its like the game is half inspired by Evangelion but without all the angst. Even when you find out Balamb is secretly run by a corrupt blob monster its presented as a problem easily resolved. Any angst is entirely personal: Squall's issues and other characters' generic teenage bullshit like Quistis being super dooper upset at making Rinoa upset. The mid 90s slice of life anime vibe seems to cannibalize the tone of the game even when other factors should have a stronger presence. Laguna's story doesn't suffer from this because his role as a soldier is the driving plot device as the thing he's trying to escape from.

I mean FFVII and SotN raised the aesthetics and thematic delivery of the genre. Half Life essentially failed on every level, trying to embrace a new form of narrative but sacrificed both gameplay and aesthetics, essentially creating a very hollow experience that autists can project on to and then have a 100+ post thread on here detailing their meltdown.
Some people dislike FFVII.
Some people dislike SotN.
Some people dislike Half Life. Like the previous two groups, you just gotta shut the fuck up and live with the fact some people thinks your game sucks. Seriously never see fans of those other two games sperg out this hard on here.
