Janken was one of the worst ideas in gaming.

Well that's not an "idea" as such; those games are designed around that scanline-based visualization region. There's nothing "more" really to display so they made the most of it, granted in a somewhat lame way. Mode-7 games are a different matter but even then a cropped region usually helped performance

FPS games with gigantic maps that are like 99% empty. Like in Delta Force. There's huge maps with occasional buildings and stuff around the place but all of them are empty except the ones containing main mission objectives. You explore a lot the first time you play it because the maps kind of make you feel like exploring but by the end of the game you realise you were wasting a lot of time

The general feeling for some people (which I'm on board with) is that Fallout 2 is more open world, bigger and with a deeper story, but the gameplay is less well focused.

Fallout 1 has a more clearly focused world, story and gameplay feeling that just feels like a more well put together package.

Lots of people like Fallout 2 better though because of it's expansiveness and wider lore.

Loved their translations for the PSX versions of Lunar 1 and 2, they truly managed to make livelier dialogues. Some things, like the ABBA jokes, were probably out of place, but most of the time they were told by unimportant NPCs that would otherwise be talking about the weather, so it's not a big deal.
Their translation for Alundra was also very good except for things like the surfer guy, although in this case some of the jokes were misplaced in dark moments.
They seemed to be more restrained with the translation of Arc the Lad, but it was well done anyway.
I don't think their difficulty changes were really that needed, as they mainly resulted in enemies becoming damage sponges. The lizards from Alundra or the bosses from Lunar would never die regardless not being that dangerous.

pic related, Day of the Tentacle is the only 2D game with a hand-drawn cartoon art style that doesn't look like a cheap Disney imitation, and it's all beautiful. Legitimately funny too, with clever puzzles that aren't bullshit but are not obvious like all good adventure games.

You start over from the beginning when you get a game over. Each attempt you get a bit further.
It can be frustrating at times, but the sensation of slowly improving and mastering the game is incredibly satisfying. Even though you lose a lot, each new stage ends up feeling like a massive victory.
As you practice more and 1CC more games, your skill improves. Much of this skill is actually transferable. You eventually reach a point where you're so skilled you can 1CC a new game in just a few attempts or even on your first try.
As long as you play good games that reward skill, the process is quite enjoyable and fulfilling. I wholeheartedly recommend it.

And yeah, what is the trick to driving the EO?

>> No.10921347

>>10921326
The trick is to learn the tracks and get used to start turning earlier in the corners. If you are emulating, you can map gas and brakes on the analog triggers of a modern controller. It is possible to do small drifts that last for about 1/2 second by slightly releasing the gas and quickly pushing again.

Isn't this also limited by the fact that you have to install games to the 15mb flash memory?
Sure you can just put every game on the SD card, but it isn't click and play like with other systems.

>> No.10921321

>>10921275
You are right it isnt click and play you have to wait for the game to transfer from sd card to ram
Quite lame but its the only good option on og hardware

I got this same NGPC but I left it on a shelf and now one side is yellowed by sunlight. Always put your handheld consoles away from the sun.

How do I get good at Beatmania? I'm playing PS1 games with an ASCII controller and I'm getting demolished even by three star songs.

get your thumb involved in the keys, start scratching with your pinky. beatmania is hard but stick with it

Rhythm game fanatic or just starting? It may take years until you can actually reach the higher levels

Lots of variables here...the ascii controller sucks and makes the game harder. The iidx "Konami official controller" or KOC is better, but acts weird with the PS1 games(besides 6th mix). Also if you're emulating and not playing on a CRT, you're likely experiencing lag. As the others mentioned as well, these games are just hard. I've been playing iidx for over 10 years and have never cleared a 12. The best advice I can give is to love to hate the game; you WILL keep failing and you WILL get mad, but if you can persist and improve, it is very fulfilling.

>> No.10920394

>>10920130
Thankfully, playing on a CRT through MiSTer with the controller plugged via SNAC, so no extra lag involved. As for controller, I live in a sanctioned country, so importing is not an option currently. ASCII is the only controller available locally. I used to play on a gamepad before, but at certain point it becomes too hard to remember what button does what. I have the same issue with Pop'n Music, but that's even worse there.

>> No.10920475

>>10920394
Ah okay, honestly you'll just need to practice then. The Ascii controller is stiff but not unusable. If the pic in OP is the only game you're playing, try to get more games to play if possible, because playing the same group of songs over and over can drive you crazy.

Timeline fuckery is old hat. The golden age of scifi was in the 50s-60s and you'll find 99.999999% of all scifi stories after that period are derivative. Go read some Harlan Ellison and Isaac Asimov, moron.

that's weird, because VIII's storyline is more complicated than most FFs before it, but the characters other than squall and rinoa are unmemorable

>> No.10919434

The story is pretty simple. There is an evil sorceress trying to compress time. Obviously that is a complex concept but that doesn't make the story itself complex.

What does /vr/ think of Knuckles Chaotix?

>> No.10919854

I know it's technically 'Knuckle's' game, but it just doesn't feel like a Sonic game... can't explain why. The special stage is cool and a lot of fun tho.

>> No.10920017

The people shitting on the tether mechanic are either incels or grew up without siblings. It makes two player so much fun.

>> No.10920021

It's genuinely great. The reason so many people shit on the controls (which is why the game is fun) are probably the same people who think classic Resident Evil also has bad controls. That is to say, they're not very bright.
