I said "mostly solved" because the broad strokes for getting within a few thousand of the highest score are known by most of the people playing. The differences between the first 6 spots seem to be just dedication to the details like you're getting at, making new PBs harder to get and scaring off people like >>6200251. 5 minute has so much more going on that it's easier to get new PBs and it would take longer for the board to tighten up, which could inspire less detailed types to at least want to get a place in the middle of the board and maybe even try to grind up a higher score by fixing the clearest mistakes.
My hope is to have people of all stripes at least want to lay a score on the board.

The entire reason I chose not only a caravan game, but a NES game, is so it'd be easy for anyone to jump in. It's 2 or 5 minutes of a game that only uses one button and a d pad and has at most 4-5 enemies and 1 or 2 bullets on screen. I don't know how much lower the bar of entry can get.

It's too bad that the 5 minute didn't light people up as much as the 2 minute did, seeing that it only took a few days before the 2 minute was effectively solved. I imagine having a leaderboard where the top 6 scores are all within 6000 points of each other with the 7th being 14000 away from the 6th from the makes people less willing to try their hand. 5 minute has a lot more room for optimization and error, meaning it could have some real competition, but I guess the amount of learning and training to put in 5 straight minutes of good play is asking a lot from people who just want to hop into a game for a silly competition. At the same time, Star Soldier is still a 1986 game - maybe just having a more modern shmup could do a lot. I gotta start thinking about what the next caravan will be. Maybe a PC Engine one?

I not only fucked up getting the 40k whale in level 3, but took long enough on the boss fights that I didn't get level 3's set of eyes in time. Just a couple seconds delay makes 80k points of difference. Brutal.

Now I really see why 5 minutes was the actual "competition" compared to the 2 minute qualifier. There's so many things that you need to make go right or else you're just falling down a flight of stairs. It's kinda crazy how legit nervous I started to feel once I hit the third stage and had to put everything I was practicing to work. Once I started missing panels I was getting fuckin furious, and then I just about screamed when I fucked up the eyes at the very end. Holy shit. That's all for tonight for me.
