Some FF speedrunner (I forget who, I think it might have been Gyre_) told me that BRAK has a 3/256 chance to kill Chaos, I don't know if it's specific to the US NES version though. It's been a while since I thought about it.

I've never seen the Eye cast BRAK but they do cast Petrify.

Also, woah, fascinating stuff. I knew about the Eye=Beholder thing, and I pretty much figured that the mages were supposed to be mind flayers, but I didn't realize that the D&D influence ran that deep.

And like... of all the "terrible twos", I actually think Zelda 2, Mario 2, and Metroid 2 are just as good as any other game in their respective series.

Now, Castlevania 2 is a hard game to defend. I enjoyed it, I even played through it twice but it really is a deeply flawed game.

Final Fantasy 3 is still a lot of fun though, I don't know if FF2's age is necessarily a factor here.

FF1 is also a blast if you don't mind the bugs (or play the less buggy Wonderswan or Playstation ports)

I picked up 8 Eyes at a random pawn shop in Kentucky for $2 about four or five years ago and yes, it's a lot of fun. Underrated gem. Being able to control the bird with the second controller is a fun mechanic.
