The regular shotgun has a relatively tight and realistic spread for a shotgun in a classic style shooter.
Duke Nukem 3D also has this but without the horizontal patterning.

Nah, that's bullshit, the shotgun has pretty good range, you can easily use it to shoot skeet with lost souls or pick off gunmen from on top of ledges.

That's something I liked about the pump shotguns in Doom and Duke, they actually have real life practical range where you can actually use them for ranged combat (unlike in Doom 3 where it's basically a 90 degree spread from the muzzle, and you basically have to go toe to toe with an enemy or never ever score a full pattern, which I imagine would be the least safe weapon to use by a security force ever)
