So I am a huge brutal doom fan, it brought me out of a 2 or so year hiatus and I have been playing it with tons of maps

last thread I saw someone accuse a guy of bait posting for asking why people don't like it, but my curiosity has the better of me here.

why don't people like it? It is visceral, contains tons of rip and tear, and makes the game more challenging. is it really just hipster hate for being popular, or are there some glaring flaws I am missing/superior alternative I should be playing?

It is brought up a lot by people that are looking to start shit by asking in bad faith. Sometimes people jump the gun on people asking honestly as a result of this. It's unfortunate.

People only really seem to have a huge problem with the mod when it's touted as Doom 2.0, strictly better than vanilla, etc, or fans insist/complain everything else made by the community should be BD-compatible or oriented.

The flaws of the mod itself (not just taste) would probably be overly loud sounds, spaghetti code in the mod itself because the author is not a tidy coder, bugs due to spaghetti code, and it doesn't do a great job of crediting everyone that made the assets the mod uses or contributed to the mod. There was a much better than previous credits list released in the latest version but it still not comprehensive and some would say it over glorifies the authors own contributions. Really he needs to list a separate credits list to showcase the work of others, and a separate per resource one for those wishing to use the resources in their own work. Most mods do this but look at Samsara or Fractal Doom's credit list for a good example of this.

The author is also a pretty big asshole, though he appears to have gotten better as of late. Maybe he's getting better, maybe it's a consequence of posting on 4chan rather than a traditional forum. Who knows. If you ask I can go into lengths about his asshole behavior but it seems like bringing up past drama unnecessarily.

This is exactly the turn off for some people. Some sounds are extremely loud (or even had their volume turned up) which causes annoying loudness and sometimes sound clipping. Its annoying for some people.
The amount of gore is actually sometimes offputting for people, saying there's quite a lot of it.
The demons have many elements in them that make it more akin to torture porn. They wail and scream for you to end their torture which just makes you seem creepy and sadistic.
Additionally, Doom being a game from 1993, many people have toasters for computers. They come into this game not expecting the intense amount of gore things to slow their computers to a crawl.

It makes hitscanners bullshit. The rest of the game is actually easier. Armor is fucked all to hell and projectiles are still as slow as their normal Doom counterpart (and do just about as much damage compared to the super-fast hitscanners' fire rates) which makes them painfully underpowered. (Terrifying, considering many late-game monsters are projectile-throwers.)

And lastly, while the mod was at it's peak in popularity, Sgt. Mark got a bit of a big head from it. He made some comments that I don't want to get into in fear of getting them wrong, but just know that they include statements that many people would consider horrible and there's a reason he's been banned from both ZDoom and Zandronum forums.

Ah, good job! I personally have trouble with torrents; it's good you made this easier for people with iffy internet. However, for the sake of clarity, the MW4 that comes with the Quadrology [sic] torrent is NOT the updated version of Mercs that was available for free a few years back. It's worth seeking that out if you want to play MW4.

On topic: what are everyone's favorite lesser-known gameplay mods? I've been playing the fuck out of Satanic Redux lately. You get to rip and tear as a necromancer; you can charm and resurrect monsters to be your allies, and instead of health pickups, you have to kill monsters with blood magic to replenish health.

I DID play the original Doom and Doom II in vanilla mode, and hell it was great. But Brutal Doom adds strategic approach to the (already) fast-paced gameplay.
And I love the gore, its extremely violent, just like the Doom comic (and yes, I DO know the comic is an excaggeration).
But I cant help it, its just fucking awesome and I love it.

I tried Chillax, Tartarus and other megawads with millions of demons. I want to RIP AND TEAR their guts and see the map covered in blood and gore, but sometimes ZDoom crashes, my computer lags and stuff.

I've been here since the beginning of /doom/ and there's only been a few faint rumbles of what an /mlp/ wad would be like.
I suspect most of the people who were interested in working on it kept quiet and posted about it only there.

Considering the reaction even a Scootaloo rip and tear edit had in the shitty rip and tear edit compilation, I wouldn't be surprised if a themed mod would have set off fucking wildfires.

I made 26 of the 62 RIP AND TEAR pictures (just look for the ones with the Segoe Print font / just look for the images with similiar font).
I love to create the images but I cant sometimes think of a proper quote and just slap it into the speech bubbles, so I tested two times if /doom/ can think of a proper quote and they did, so I guess Im just a lazy cunt.

Not very. Some things are disadvantaged, certainly, but nothing is overtly overpowered. A laser minigun will RIP AND TEAR, but it's not even normally found until the late game and you'll be quite disadvantaged specializing in big guns.

I have heard that unarmed is overtly overpowered, though I can't personally confirm.

Pfft, no. It has pretty damned good combat for an isometric RPG. It's not clunky, it's not hard to figure out, it works well. If you think this is bad combat, you must be coming from something like Jagged Alliance and have never played Arcanum or Planescape.
