What's the best way to play Blood these days? I bought Blood Fresh Supply when it came out, but heard about various issues it had that ruined it for people familiar with the game. I stopped playing in the hope that they'd patch it, but last I checked(a few months after release) it was still busted. I think I've also heard mixed things about GDX, so I'm not sure what to go with. I've also got One Unit Whole Blood, if that might be a good option.

If you're looking for games that bleed soul and atmosphere.

Deus Ex is very good. You can play it Vanilla.
Call of Cthulhu on GOG comes pre-patched I think. It might not even run on Steam. It's very jank.
Alone in the Dark might not give you what you want.

Other games to consider:
Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl - There is a complete mod that makes the game easier. I was able to play it vanilla fine. If it doesn't work there's the zone reclamation mod. Play on the hardest difficulty because the difficulty scaling is fucked and makes the game more tedious on easier ones.
Stalker: Call of Pripyat - It's way more polished than SoC but it also doesn't have as strong atmosphere. Play SoC first
System Shock 1 - Made by the Thief devs. The UI has a learning curve but once you get over it and past the first few shitty levels it becomes amazing. The game just grabs you by the balls out of nowhere and SHODAN is at her best here.
System Shock 2 - It's in the Thief engine so you might spot some similarities. It has way stronger atmosphere than SS1 but feels slightly less alive for some reason. The RPG system might throw you off, if you get some hacking and standard weapons you can't go wrong.
Vampire the Masquerade - It's barely finished but the parts that are finished are some of the best shit in gaming. You need the fan mod that fixes a ton of bugs and even then it'll still be kinda jank.
Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen - It's an adventure that just bleeds soul. Kain is an amazing narrator.
Blood - It's not as atmospheric as the other games but it's style, execution and balance are great. It has a STEEP learning curve but once you get over it the feeling is sublime.
Arx Fatalis - Made by the Dishonored devs but it is a completely different game. Very very slow paced. Very thief-like in it's atmosphere and sound design. The world is extremely interactive and the magic system is pretty deep. Use the Arx Liberatis patch and go a mage.

What’s the best way to play Duke 3D? I also wan to give Blood a shot.

It feels more stiff to me. Duke feels nice, Blood feels the best.
I can play Duke and Blood with no auto aim, here it seems the uzis and shotgun work better. Maybe its the enemy roster or the way mouse works in shadow warrior.
I have been using more items to survive than the other games.

It is good and every time I play I end up playing for a good amount of time, but some issues I have with it:
>Constant chip damage from fires
>Constant damage from hitscanners (you can get lucky and take out a bunch without getting hit, but even on lower difficulties you always get randomed by some guy in the background)
>Weapons: Because of how fast you get damage you’re best off using explosives like Blood (which are great), but it makes half the weapons novelties that barely make any sense to use.
>Useless items: The invisibility thing is good, but the flash grenade, caltrops are basically useless and the gas grenade is good but locks you off from an area for way too long
>Only one enemy has a unique death animation for your sword reee
>Bad enemy design: Red pant guys are quick kills while red-brown pant guys 360 ninjutsu you and eat bullets

IDK it just feels like a missed opportunity. At best it plays like Blood lite but most of the time it plays like Duke 3D Ninja edition with a few added annoyances

Woah, calm down. Sorry I didn't explain myself very well.

I think emulation is one of the best things ever. I am a massive fag for preservation and without emulation we wouldn't have:

Fan translations, reversed engineered source ports (like the new Zelda one) and amazing homebrew games like XenoCrisis which actually work on original hardware. The reason that was so easy to make was because emulators now are so accurate that it allows you to debug the game so easily. And lets not forget MAME? I live in the UK and without MAME there would be LITERALLY hundreds of arcade games I'd never get to play.

Emulation is the one and only true fight we have against big gaming corporations who are complicit in allowing old games to die and be forgotten, even if they own the licence. This isn't the movie industry where even movies like Manos: The Hands of Fate gets a blu-ray release and Discotek find a rare copy of Project A-KO in someones basement and officially licence and release it.

Midway are dead and with them hundreds of arcade games will probably never get a rerelease.

Policenauts never would have gotten an English release.

I'd never would have played Dracula X: Rondo of Blood and fell deeply in love with it.

I never would have played Mother 3.

And I understand that for a lot of zoomers; they probably don't even have a fucking TV in their room to play games. They probably have a PC set up or emulate on their phones or laptop. Because of SCUMMVM, it's even easier for younger people to check out Blade Runner on PC. I mean shit, GOG is made off the backs of games being emulated through DOSBOX and there is now way in hell I am using Windows 3.0 ever again.

When Sega and Nintendo took Connectix Virtual Games Station to court and lost due to the fair competition act, even the law knew that gaming companies have to compete and provide their own ways of allowing uses to access legacy software (which they still don't)

I have objective thoughts about goldeney as an elder millenial. The consoles we had when i was a kid were an snes and ps1. I had never played a console fps before. However, by the time goldeneye came out my dad had been a Doom fan for awhile and we had been playing Duke3d for awhile. My best friend across the street had an n64 and it was so cool getting four people together to play goldeneye. I never got far in story mode as a kid and still havent beaten it as an adult. mainly due to how clunky the thing is, i was used to more stable games as a kid. Even as a kid I thought goldeneye was off, but stupid kid brain thought thats how the game was supposed to be. For instance when theres alot of explosions on screen I thought the framerate slowing was an on purpose deal, like slow motion. It made sense because I was a dumb kid and didnt know anyhting about framerates. I just knew this game was supposed to be cinematic and there was no way a big company would ship a product that wasnt on par with stuff that was already a few years old. On the other hand, having a pc that could play demanding games wasn't all that common back then. Not every household even had a basic PC. We only had Pcs growing up because my grandpa worked for IBM and Texas Instruments. The pc my dad played Doom, Duke3d, Blood, Quake and Half life on was pieced together from stuff my grandpa was junking. My dad still had like 800$ in that PC. That was a shitload of money in a flyover state in the 90s, especially when my familys grocery budget was something like 30$ a week. So there was a huge appeal in just buying a 200$ console, popping in a 60$ cartridge and it just worked. Coupled with there not being any real fps on console before to speak of (yeah i know there were duke3d, doom, and powerslave ports, but they sucked compared to the pc versions) It was just really something else and a sign of the times. here 25 years later I just want a goldeneye remaster with a solid framerate.

I have the old complete collection from GOG which works perfectly in zblood on windows but I can't get it to work on linux

I don't want to buy fresh supply when zblood is better and I can avoid giving money to the cunts that murdered the original company

Others

>Akumajou Dracula

Remake of the first game for the Sharp X68000 computer. Japan only. Features new levels, updated versions of classic ones and additional bosses to spice up the gameplay as well as a massive art boost. Absolutely punishingly batshit insane difficulty, easily the hardest game in the series. Is available as part of Chronicles though this port has issues, so I recommend you just play it as is instead. Has THREE soundtracks, all high quality, available depending on your sound card for the computer.

>Chronicles

An updated version of the X68000 game. Features an arranged mode which changes Simon’s sprite, lowers the brutal difficulty and completely remixes the soundtrack to become this ridiculous but amazingly good set of dance tunes. Has the X68000 version too, but it has some odd glitches and bugs that make it even harder and downright broken at times so dodge that version if you can.

>The Dracula X Chronicles

Remake of Rondo of Blood for the PSP but with 3D models and English voice acting. A solid way to play a classic game, though the original is still the best choice. Features the original game and Symphony of the Night in their original forms as bonus unlockables with added content, fully translated text/a full retranslation and dub for Symphony and more

>Kid Dracula

Weird ass spin off games where you play as… guess. Decent and inoffensive platformers. Game Boy version was released in the west but it took the NES version a good 30 years to see a release stateside.

That should be everything of note. Apologies for the walls of text, I’m quite passionate about this series. Hope this helps give you an oversight to each game and their pros and cons, OP

What's the best way to play BLOOD right now? Is it still BloodGDX or have they worked some more on fresh supply?

>> No.8377845 [View]

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is a weird beast, try playing Shadow of Chernobyl and treat it more like RPG than FPS, its one of better fusions of these two genres and its worth giving it another shot because its unique enough to spawn its own sub-genre of games
>Hitman: Codename 47
very jank, didnt age well, but a landmark in game technology, if its a bit too old for you go for Hitman: Contracts, which goes directly into Hitman: Blood Money. Reason for it is because Contracts retells some events of first game through memories of main character as he is tripping due to gunshot wound he suffered.
>C&C: Red Alert 2
RTS that doesnt take itself too seriously and promotes aggressive play, if you think its too silly you can go and play C&C: Tiberium Sun, which is more serious, or go completely other direction and play RA2: Yuri's Revenge, which is an expansion that goes even crazier. Older games in C&C series are good, but harder to enjoy when you got used to modern RTS mechanics.
>Return to Castle Wolfenstein
basically what nu-wolf games wished they were, one hell of an fps that goes from usual nazis to shoot to crazy experiments to occult in various locations around globe. game turned 20 recently and is still very fondly remembered (partially for SS assassins in catsuits)
>Blitzkrieg
old ruskie RTS with pause, will grind you to dust if you play these games as "select all my dudes and rightclick on enemy" type
>Max Payne
campy noire classic from land of finland, came out on ps2 but that version sucked. very quotable story, fun gameplay with adaptable difficulty that seems to be actually locked to highest on pc version.
>Stronghold
RTS but for people who like to build fortifications and turtle, except you will learn at some point that attack is best defence.
>Unreal '99
lesser known game because everyone only remembers Unreal Tournament. best way to think of it is Metroid: Prime before its times.

What's the best way to play Blood? I can't play it on GZDoom, right, since it uses a different engine than Carmack's abomination.
I kinda want to enjoy Bloodguy's adventures, but that mouse moving option isn't pleasant and I can't turn it off.

>played the LoS games first
Fuck me, I adore the LoS games and even I'm not entirely sure how to answer this, because they're more or less a 3D clusterfuck of elements of the previous games with combat as their bread and butter. That's really going to depend on what you liked most about the LoS games, but putting that aside? I would say Castlevania 1 for being a great foundation and learning experience for arguably every game afterwards. If you're drawn in by the gameplay, then probably the DS games and perhaps CoTM, because those ones tend to have the best overall design in that regard, having options that actually matter in regards to when, where, and how you use them, though they rather different in how they go about it. If you're gripped by aesthetics, then I would say Rondo of Blood, SoTN, and Aria of Sorrow. I wouldn't consider them to be the best in their class like so many including OP do, but hot damn do they have class.

Alternatively, and you arguably might as well do this since you already went through the LoS games, you could play the other 3Dvanias. The differences in design between the N64 games, the PS2 games, and the LoS games are more pronounced, but at the same time, will perhaps feel like familiar territory for you. The N64 games play more like the classic games probably more than other CV game past Rondo, 2D and 3D both, and as such, got a lot more platforming going on that's not at all "on rails", and your combat moveset is, uh, way more pared down compared to what you get in LoS, but it's nonetheless effective. PS2 games, on the other hand, have far greater emphasis on combat and a lot of mechanics to toy with, but approach to level and enemy design is a good deal more arcadey, videogamey, even. Course, the level design is also repetitious as fuck and not really anything at all like the LoS games, but if you can get past that, you should probably be fine.

What Kex engine stuff has been like this?

Shadowman HD is the best way to play the game
Forsaken HD is the best way to play the game
System Shock Enhanced is the best way to play the game.
Doom 64/EX is clearly the best way way to play the game.
Turok 1+2 HD are clearly the best way to play the game
Quake is a little fucked but is getting fixed.
Blood they literally can't fix it as they're not allowed.

So.... One game. Arguably two?
