It's not wrong about some things. That's why I like burl tumd. It's brutal doom with the doom put back in it. It's messy but not caring too much, it attempts to balance for weapons strategically. I don't mind headshots, but burl doesn't even bother. Lengthy animations for rip and tear? Not in burl, fuck shit up instead.
Though the lengthy rip and tear animations can be turned off by simply using alt-fire and going into smash mode. The lengthy animations can afford you a few seconds of invincibility that you might use to your advantage for maneuvering as well, but it sure is boring when you're plowing through a few dozen of them.

I used to play chess with a Quake mod that was pretty slick. It felt like playing the holographic chess-like game from star wars. Enemies would hop up and do little attacks and shit. And when you check mated the king your army would get super buffed and over run the remaining enemy forces and rip and tear them up. Good times.

The threads lasting longer just means you've all settled down and aren't just posting things like "DOOM!" and "LET'S PLAY DOOM!" and my personal favorite "RIP AND TEAR!"
Quality posts are being made now, of course there'll always be occasional shit. But don't report/delete this post because some people just have to know this. There's usually 10x more people actually reading a thread than those posting in it. (maybe 5x more for a less fast board as this)

Considering Doom was the first you can't really say it doesn't have the atmosphere of a Doom game.

Doom is supposed to be an upbeat rip-and-tear simulator. It's more about the design and the fun more than the atmosphere.

I'll definitely try it out. My thing on "blasphemy" was that RGH isn't "doomy" enough IMO...playing it on realistic is slow, and methodical -- a far cry from doom's natural "RIP AND TEAR|||FUCKING CIRCLE STRAFE!"

I fully understand what you mean about the doom engine not lending itself to realism well, though. Marathon's engine (and a shit ton of other "2.5D" engines) don't work well for "real" archetecture either (no bridges, multistory buildings etc...)
