Is there any particular reason on how Brutal Doom got very popular in the first place?

I know WHY it is popular - RIP AND TEAR, gore, and that many can relate the high amounts of damage done by each side to typical modern shooters amongst other things, but when Doom's modding community isn't as well known to the mainstream audience of gamers, the thread for it on the ZDoom forums has 382 pages, and practically every Doom thread made on /v/ is now centered around Brutal Doom, I just cannot help but wonder HOW it got big in the first place.

Even if it might bring in the casuals I suppose it does kind of help introduce new blood to custom Doom wads

I think it was pretty much the gorefest, fatalities and the whole RIP AND TEAR parafernalia

I've always said that, if someone decides to pick up the gore and fatalities from BD and calls it BD Lite, it'll be downloaded as much as the original mod

I highly doubt anyone plays BD exclusively for the hi-res effects and or weaponry

It's loud, fast-paced, violent, bright, and over the top. The screen rocks. The monsters scream and bleed out while clutching their wounds. You can flip shit off and use the most annoying sound byte ever.

It's like call of duty with a better setting: shut off your brain and just rip and tear.

I had trouble with it too, specifically in the Chex Quest 3 chapter. I forget what difficulty I was on. Led to a lot of awesome RIP AND TEAR moments with the spork. It'd also be a bit easier if all the ammo types were named clearer, not just some permutation of "Zorch".

On the other hand, Chex Quest 3 was the first Doom type game I played through after these threads reminded me of my nostalgia for the original CQ, so I'd like to think my skills have improved from starting to play through Doom on UV.
