actually I use it mostly while LARPing with my orc character

still, works fairly well as a spear/halberd combo.

If I ever make a Mk3 (that one there is the second D-axe i made) it'd probably look more like a dire-mace (replace the axe bits with flanged mace bits... really wont look that different) although that would make storage even more difficult. either way the Mk3 will be made to be lighter, the Mk2 is just too heavy to throw around (where I LARP the weapons mustn't strike too hard)

hopefully by then i'll have some kind of rack to hang it on. right now the Mk2 can lie on the floor quite nicely.

that's great and all, but you can't pierce shit with it, and the cutting force, while greater per pound, was less per sword due to the greater size of the straightedges.

>> No.9611506

>>9611465
The blades are practically identical. It's just that one has a bulge at the end and only has one cutting edge. There would not have been an appreciable difference in forging time. Also, fitter stronger person? NO. Just no. If you're carrying a sword into battle, you're just as fit or strong with a bastard sword as with a falchion, or your dead. Third point: there's a bloody 'h' in the middle of the word!

>> No.9611590

>>9611493
Well the weapon is mainly slashing orientated and if you get a cleave with it, not much could stand against that. I mean chainmail is next to nothing against it and it would go through plate easy enough also. The longsword/bastard sword, priority No.1 is piercing, which I admitt is obviously the most effective/easy way to dispatch in most melee combat.
>the cutting force, while greater per pound, was less per sword due to the greater size of the straightedges.
Maybe a bastard sword would have a greater cutting power than a one-handed falchion (still quite close I'd say), but against a two-handed falchion, it doesn't even compare, blown out to sea, bomvoyage etc etc.

>> No.9611591

Not at all, it takes alot longer to get the desired top heavy effect, typical longswords would of just been molded by the dozen, so it's prob fairer to say 1/40th of the time.
>>9611506
If you think wielding a falchion is just the same as wielding a bastard sword, you really need to step out of this conversation because you obviously know nothing about it. A two-handed falchion is an incredibly unwieldy weapon for anyone who isn't in peak physical condition.

>> No.9611672

>>9611591
ahh, right
still a falchion did probably not take as much work as a longsword
only one edge, no need for balancing, shorter blade and less need for a thin blade so less time needed to flatten the steel...
1/4 is probably a little overestimating/underestimating the time needed to make a longsword/falchion

Because the weapon has a curved blade it almost gives the same kind of effect as a broadhead axe onto chainmail. Chainmail is next to nothing against a falchion, the sheer force of a well placed cleave would split two sheets in half i'd be willing to wager.

Wrong and, well, technically correct in saying that two-handed falchions are unwieldy. Sure, the generic long sword could be made in a mold, but we're not talking about the kind of thing a feudal lord would give his peons by the dozen. I'm talking about a properly made long sword. Couple days for the strikers to make the blade, another couple days to fit the hilt, and a few hours to a day to make the scabbard.

Yes, I know that falchions and bastard swords were wielded differently. Just looking at the form of the weapons should make that obvious.

Most people have this really screwed up idea of what spears are good for. Fundamentally a spear is simply a stick with a pointy end, there are just as many different types of spear as there are of swords. Yes some are made for large formation fighting but others, like >>9611694 are made for close-quarters combat and are devastating against sword (and axe) wielding opponents.

>> No.9612098

>>9612056
That's because most people are trained by video games and Hollywood to believe that swords are the be-all end-all weapon and that spears are only good against cavalry and in massed battles. Most weapons were useful on the battlefield, that's just how it worked. If it wasn't useful, it didn't make it to the fight.

There's also the fact that left-handedness has some funky genetics. If a left-handed man has kids with a right-handed woman, there's only a normal chance of passing it on. Vice versa, you get a slightly-above-normal chance. If both parents are left-handed, you get an even 50/50/ split.
