Hey, /tg/, I'm gonna ask yo guys this since apparently the most intelligent people hang out here.

So I was just wondering why the Scientologists got protested in the first place?

They're based in America so they have freedom of belief, so LOGICALLY, it must of been something they did that angered you guys (Since Freedom of belief dosen't mean freedom of action.)

So what did the Scientologists do?

And then there's the whole thing about the "religion" stemming from a bunch of authors saying at a scifi convention that if they were interested in money they'd form a religion. Most then agreed it would be a horrible thing to do to just manufacture a religion, but Harlan Ellison went and wrote Dianetics. IIRC, Heinlein went on the record as having said "We were just joking, but holy hell the bastard went and did it."

It also doesn't help their "freedom of belief" argument that Ellison recanted the whole thing on his deathbed. When an organization is in the business of peddling known lies they don't deserve any protection of any sort on the matter.

The protests were more focused on their shady "business" practices, their misleading image (that they spend a lot of money to craft), and indoctrination procedures.

Why should you have to pay money for a religious experience? Why do you need audits? Why are you encouraged to cut yourself off from individuals who won't convert? Why is the "church" so interested in photographing and cataloging individuals who speak out against it? Why are they so quick to resort to smear campaigns?

That's of course ignoring the strange medical emergencies that the Church spends a lot of time and money covering up, such as members being starved to death, or trying to treat medical conditions with vitamin supplements and herbal remedies, or the constant steam baths and sauna trips..... and that Honey concoction they tell believers to feed to children... (I shudder to think who might have fed it to infants)....

Or how they unveil the religion in tiers, with a general focus on well being and "health", and then that Xenu crap later on when you're a fanatic....

Anyways, is it not the right of the founders to put out whatever material and rules they wish?

Certianly publishing such material causes no physical harm?

Now, if a person is being forced to pay money or follow creeds agianst their will, then that is illegal, but otherwise, the founders can publish and say whatever they want.

As long as it is not Public obsinity (Miller v. California)

or Fighting words (Chaplinsky v. New Hampshire)

Let me explain to you how the First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America works.

It protects a person from being discriminated against by the government of the United States on the basis of religion (and other factors, but lets just focus on that one), including prohibition of protected speech.

What the First Amendment does NOT DO is protect you from the citizens of the United States. It protects you from the federal and state governments. Unless they cross the line into illegal harassment, the general public can say all the nasty things they want about a religion, publicly decry it, and shout down anyone who tries to voice a contrary opinion, because the First Amendment also grants them the right to free speech. All it means is that you have the right to speak out without being arrested. It doesn't mean we have to listen.

Sure, to the extent that you can do that under public scrutiny. And the rest of the world has the freedom to call you out for being an idiot if that's what they think about your beliefs. The inherent problem with your argument is that you're conflating "freedom of belief" with "freedom to not be criticized for your beliefs."

So yes. They can, legally speaking, believe whatever they want. And others can, legally speaking, take to the streets in (peaceful!) protest of those beliefs. And in this situation, no ones rights are violated.
