The Square cube law is what prevents you from scaling up things that work at one size to a bigger size. Basically, strength (or lift in that case) increases with cross section (an area, roughly proportional to height squared) while weight increases with volume (roughly proportional to height cubed).

This also causes other sorts of weird things like a mouse sized person would freeze to death since you radiate heat based on your surface area but generate heat based on your volume.

"Ha, I knew those dwarves weren't right in the head," Grumog, your orc companion says as you lead the group into the necropolis. "Now lets grab us some of their gold and get out of here."
"We shouldn't be doing this," says River. She fidgets and replaces a strand of her hair behind her pointed ear.
"Someone has to," you say. "A whole race just can't come down with melancholy."
"Never met a cheerful dwarf. Day always were quiet and brooding. Unless day were drunk, always serious."
"Well, we won't figure anything out from here," you say and you enter an arch at random. An inky blackness is beyond the arch and you dig through your pack for a lantern.
While you fumble for a light, Grumog laughs at you and strides into the darkness. A moment or two of stumbling and he hurries back to you. "Fuck! Dat whole cave is too dark. I can't see a damn ding." He seems a bit more patient than usual as he wants for you to secure your lantern. Once you do, you step through the curtain of blackness and the lantern dims. What was just a healthy wick is now dimmer than a sick glowworm. Grumbling, you continue on and Grumog and River follow.
Turning right at the first branch, you mark the wall and go on into the inky blackness. Behind you are two warriors who would go into a dragon's lair unafraid but now, you feel them following so close behind you that you're tripping on their feet.
About a hundred feet past the arch you enter a giant cavern and you feel the openness of it. With your little light you can just see the doorway into the cavern and a few feet of the floor but nothing else, the darkness devours the light before it can get and farther.

Uncertain, she does. You tie the chalk to the bottom of her staff and begin using it as a walking stick. Once you're certain you can see the chalk on the floor, you begin walking toward the center of the cavern. Almost
immediately the walls behind you disappear into the darkness and you feel as if you were on a featureless plane. You walk on.
"Someone say SOMEDING!" The wall behind you echos faintly but you hear nothing else.
"We don't know if the dwarves brought in any creatures to protect their graves..."
"I can't really think of anything to say that wouldn't be redundant," River adds.
"I don't care what, dis quiet is too..."
"Shh." You hush your companions as you see something on the edge of your vision. As you come closer you see it is two dead dwarven children. There is some stone toys between them and it looks like they were rolling them to each other.
River looks heartbroken at them. "They must have played while they were waiting for the poison to... work."
Grumog and you share a look then shake your heads. The children were right in front of you so you make a large half circle around the children and their toys. Continuing on, you notice the chalk wearing low so you replace it with another from your pack. You three walk in silence for about an hour before you reach the other side. Unbroken but engraved walls meet you. You squint up and you think you see a balcony above you. "Shall we climb?"
Grumog grunts noncommittally, hardly his normal complaining self. River just fidgets and shrugs. With as close to a unanimous decision as you'll get, you write a small message saying that you climbed here on the ground before fishing in your pack for a grappling hook. One your third try you manage to hook the balcony.

You grunt and struggle but you manage your way up the rope. Once you are a few feet off of the ground, the ground fades away and the world is just you, the misshapen dwarven carvings on the wall and the rope. And darkness in all directions. After you get far enough away, River casts a light spell but like the lantern, it only provides a feeble light. After a minute or two, you make it to the balcony. Inside is a tiny niche with three unblinking dwarves, each sitting upon what would to a human be called a throne. For dwarves it just meant they had the money to spare for a gilded chair. None wore a crown so you were certain they weren't royalty. Still, you close their eyes with the flat of your palm then pry off the nicer jewels from the chairs. Seeing nothing else in the niche you shout that you are coming back down. You shake the clamminess out of your hand and begin climbing down.
Once you get close enough to the ground you see your two companions huddled around River's light. They were close enough to cause a fight in either of their homelands but perhaps after this dwarf thing the world could change for the better in other ways. "Enough spooning, lets go around the edge to see if we can find more balconies." With a practiced tug of the rope the knot at the top loosens and you walk around the edge of the cavern peering upward. Spotting another balcony, you toss your hook up with only a couple of tries.

"I'm coming down then." You climb down, slipping once or twice due to your hands feeling thick and clammy but manage to descend without injury. Once you get down, you look at River and Grumog for clues and notice the stress in their eyes. You decide not to worry them without reason. You pat your pouch and feel the jewels. "I've got a few trinkets I'd like to see in a better light. Lets go back out of the arch for a break."
"Dat sounds good."

Your nerves seem to ease as you follow your dotted path path to the first balcony. You ponder about going back up to check if you really grabbed the jewels the first time or not but you decide it can wait. This all encompassing dark is getting to you all.
Grumog takes the lantern from you and begins hurrying in front of you and River. You edge over to her and bask in the light of her orb. "Don't go so fast that you miss the chalk, 'og!"
"Ha! Dats not likely. I've got da best night vision." Its not high comedy but the three of you share a laugh. Grumog flickers at the edge of your vision and you start to yell at him when he stops dead. "No, dats not right!" Hurrying up to him, you follow his eyes. The chalk line is leading straight between the two children. "Dey moved! DEY MOVED!"
"Calm down 'og. Whats wrong?"
"Da children moved! We went around dem!"
You look at the line and the children again uncertain. You thought you did go around the children but you're not certain. You look to River.
"Now Grumog, if we went around the children then the line wouldn't be straight. Now see, the line is straight so must have gone through the children. Remember, you touched the toy as you passed?"
"Dats not right. Dey must have moved the line... DEY MOVED!" With a suddenness that has decapitated wyvern, Grumog draws his axe and begins chopping at the children. You begin to stop him but you aren't sure if you went around the children or not so you stay yourself. After a few moments, the bodies are horribly managed but there is relatively little blood.
"Come on, 'og, lets get out of here."

You notice as you leave the children behind that your chalk stub has worn out again. You attach your last piece to the staff and follow the dotted chalk line back to the entrance.
Once you've gone twenty minutes the chalk begins getting faint. You take the lantern back from Grumog and begin walking slower, remarking the marks so you can find your trail again when you come back. Every so often a drop of blood falls off of Grumog's axe onto the ground, a sudden noise in the stillness of the cavern. You follow the chalk marks to the edge of the cavern and finally you see the walls through the darkness again. You see the tunnel you entered from in the wall and the chalk path leads you straight to it. At the end of the chalk trail you see a message telling you that you took the right path ahead but you don't see any chalk marks inside the tunnel. You begin to show River the message but Grumog and her just brush past you on their eagerness to get out of here. You hurry after them.
After you follow the tunnel for ten minutes you make it to the four way intersection. Turning right, you and your companions continue on. After a moment you pour your flask of oil into your lantern. You didn't think you'd been in here that long. Not wanting to wait on you, Grumog and River continue on with River's light. You stopper your flask and continue after their footsteps.

After a few minutes of chasing, you come to a fork in the tunnel. With all of the echoing you can't tell which way they went and your indecision keeps you at the branch until the footsteps die away. You crumple on the ground, afraid now for the first time in a long while.
"Come back here! This is the wrong way!" No answer.
You stare at the floor unthinking but then you notice a drop of blood in one of the forks. It's not much but you'll take it. "WAIT! STOP!" You yell as you run after them. You run until your lungs burn and your eyes water but you don't see the glimmer of light ahead. Instead you barrel into a chair and almost lose your lantern over the edge.
Regaining your balance you look around. Its another of the niches, this time it has a tunnel level to the balcony. Another three dwarves in another three not-thrones. This isn't the way. You turn around and rush back.
After a lifetime of running you make it back to the last fork. Maybe you imagined the blood. You turn to the other fork and dash down it. No glimmer of light. You run down it. It leads you back to the cavern, but no chalk trail. "WHAT THE FUCK?" You reach down and unhook your pouch. "KEEP THE GEMS!" The gems go into the all encompassing darkness. Your turn around and sprint back down the tunnel.

The chalk is forgotten. The staff thrown aside. Only you, the lantern and the tunnel now. You hurry down tunnel. You take another right and keep going. At your breakneck speed you barely notice the axe on the ground before you trip over it. Your lantern goes flying and smashes on a wall.
And now there is nothing, just you and the darkness.
You crawl on the ground and go back to the axe. Cold. Heavy. Sharp. You taste copper in the air. You crawl along, dragging the axe with you for a while. You don't know how long. After a while it slips out of your numb hands but you don't notice. You continue along the tunnel, feeling your way in the darkness. Nothing. No sound. No light. Just the rough rock on your hands until even that fades as your tear your hands raw.
"Is anyone here?" you almost whimper. It feels like hours have passed. Nothing for it, you must continue.
Eventually, you the texture of the silence changes. You must be at the cavern again. You feel. A chair. One of the not-thrones. You feel the dead dwarf upon it. You reach out and close his eyes. Reaching into your pack you grab your rope again. It's a simple knot but you don't want to mess it up. You tie one end to the chair, it seems heavy enough to support your weight. Then you adjust the slip knot and push off.
