Hi there /tg/, newbie WH40k player from yesterday who is apparently going to get gouged by GW on prices for Tallarn Desert Raiders. Here's a little 750 point army I've put together, which I'd like some feedback on:

-Exchange Bolt Pistol for Plasma Pistol (10 pts)
-Camo Cloak (10 pts)

1st Platoon

-Captain Al'Rahem (70 pts)
-One Guardsman w/Vox-Caster (5 pts)
-Upgrade 3 Guardsmen (Plasma Gun) (45 pts)

Infantry Squad (x2) (100 pts)
-Sergeants exchange for Plasma Pistols (20 pts)
-Replace 2 Guardsmen per squad w/HWT (Missile Launcher)(30 pts)
-Both Squads have Krak Grenades (10 pts)

2nd Platoon

-Platoon Commander exchanges pistol for Plasma Pistol (10 pts)

For modelling, how about cadian legs and arms, with catchan torso's and heads, with greenstuff keffiyahs added on. Should look fairly tallarny.

well casting depedning on methods can be super cheap. maybe drop $100-150 on supplies and models and start chugging out normally $500 armies

Those plasma pistols are all a colossal waste of points. If you're doing it for rule of cool then carry on. If you want a more effective army, drop them all for another squad or two.

You're going to have trouble claiming objectives. I would naturally suggest mechanization to get to objectives faster, especially of Al'Rahem's platoon (which is where those extra squads should be added).

Krak grenades are also a bit of a waste of points. You won't be taking out tanks in close combat. Hell you wont be getting into close combat with tanks. You're guard. Unmechanized guard at that. No run-at-tank-and-blow-it-up tactics for you.

If you want to run a more competitive yet still Tallarn themed force I would recommend something along these lines:

Giving some chimeras to Al'Rahem's squad is good though even if you don't want to mechanize the whole force. Might want to drop one hydra for some rough riders though. I was just hammering something out to give you a rough idea.

Apparently I rolled a critical fail on reading comprehension and thought that each Platoon counted as a single Troop Choice, rather than each one being an individual troop choice.

Casting can be a lot cheaper then just going out and buying.
Pewter casting isn't hard but you need a good ammount of plaster, wax, pewter or other metal (I've used pennies, they're zinc core/copper coated but the cast works well it just looks ugly but thats what painting is for), and a way to melt it (you can use a good electric stove top, but don't do it inside. There are alot of tutorials on how to make a small forge out of cement and some cans)

Doing latex molds and resin works pretty good but there's the problem of them being slightly weaker then plastic, but there are stronger resin mixtures or you can add to the mixture like some loose fiber glass. If you do it right there will be no way to tell the difference between some copyed figures and bought ones.

I went heavy on the plasma mostly for fluff reasons (seeing as the Tallarns favor Plasma/Missile weaponry), but I'll keep that in mind!
