Welcome to the Old School Renaissance General, the thread dedicated to TSR-era D&D, derived systems, and compatible content.

Broadly, OSR games encourage a tonal and mechanical fidelity to Dungeons & Dragons as played in the game's first decade - less emphasis on linear adventures and overarching meta-plots and a greater emphasis on player agency.

If you are new to the OSR, welcome! Ask us whatever you're curious about. We'll be happy to help you get started on this playstyle.

If you're reading this thread to find out what system is a good starting point for OSR play, the 1981 D&D Basic Set (along with the Expert set, often referred to together as B/X) is considered the gold standard by most of this thread. Read the original rulebooks to learn how to play, and you may find them to be good for playing with as well. If you find the original rulebooks unsatisfactory, or if you need physical copies, consider one of the following reworkings of the books (known as retroclones):
Old School Essentials
>most accurate to the original books
>great format
>relatively expensive
Basic Fantasy RPG
>mild adjustments to rules
>decent formatting
>cheap
Both these options also have System Reference Documents (SRDs) available online, for quickly finding rules without having to scan through the PDF/book.

Also, please let me know if I can improve this pasta in any way.

New deaths are in the upper left, and push the others to the right and then down onto lower rows. They are in reverse chronological order in that regard. Lately we have been exploring some sewers, trying to avoid combat, dealing with sewer people and oozes. Living in the city we are in is expensive though and we might leave for another dungeon soon.

I have my OG Moldvay Basic book because my friend gave it to me back when we were in middle school. I was getting into 3.5 at the time and really gassing it up, and I guess she found the red book in her attic one day and brought it over and was like "look this is D&D too isn't that cool" and I read through it and thought it sucked. She got kind of angry after that (for obvious reasons—I was being a shit about it) but she left the book at my house and I hung on to it ever since.
Fast forward like a decade and now the book is one of my most treasured possessions. I haven't been in contact with my old friend for a while now, but I really ought to reach out...

anyone use https://donjon.bin.sh/adnd/dungeon/index.cgi

on another not. I posted this on solo, but it seems aicable here to, if you are doing a dungeon crawl You often go through a lot of corridors, so i think having a minor encounters table for corridors is a good idea. so ething that is usualmy pretty sparse, but keeps players on their toes and gives them a sense of being lived in passages:
in hall ways rolling a d12 with 2in12 being traps 1in12 being monsters 1in12 special 2in12 descriptive and 6in12 nothing.

I used to use donjon all the time but currently I just use a pirated copy of dungeon delver and make custom maps. The twelve 2hufags of /tg/
An incomplete list
>part 2/2 over hill and under hill

>5 kitsunefag
A collection of anons that plagued /pgg/ in its heyday and had the common traits of a obsession with a few of the following; kitsune, traps, tuplas, lewdness, erp, magical realm game and character ideas, touhou, and generally vaguely sexual weebshit trash. Edna was probably among their ranks but quite a few more existed within the board
Most of them I knew have morphed into FAT DOG WIFE posters
>7 ???
>8 ???
>9 yakumofag
Showed up on /osrg/ during the hectic times of 2020
Took advantage of the rampant trolls in the general and the infamy of the various 2hufags such as moku edna kitsune and the various weebs on /osrg/ and /tg/
Showed up with a fresh account to the bad osr discord probably to grab attention. Only a few posts were made there and he since vanished
Favourite tactics involved fucking with op’s to generate infamy, extreme friendliness and his main tactic of antagonising the callout trolls causing them to engage in their unique shitposting ability of accusing everyone else to be trolls
admitted to giving up trolling around the time when things started to clam down but can still be seen around these parts
Generally for some reason sticks to a principle of unconditional friendliness and is willing to engage with most anons on open terms

Of Thac0, not that I've heard. Of DAC, yes. Basically, if you have plate+shield it's first-class armor. If you just have plate, it's second-class. Plus, it keeps the numbers bounded, because people have more of an aversion to going below 0 than they do above 20. Not that that ever stopped TSR D&D...

Mathematically, they're equivalent. They're one of the small handfuls of mechanical changes that are acceptably compatible in /osrg/.

Personally, I use a different system.

The DM should be conducting all "attack" rolls behind the screen. If they are aware of the player's class, AC, and level they should easily be able to check a chart or even have the value memorized or noted. Not only does this solve the issue of DAC behind cumbersome for players, but it would also allow for the DM to easily convert to THAC0 or other systems that use the same math. It will also greatly speed up combat which your players will love.

Why hasn't anyone tried to make another boxed game like B/X for sale in regular game stores. The one thing that puts of a lot of people from RPGs are the big rulebooks because a lot of people assume that you need to read all those pages in order to be able to play. When these games get packaged as board games with everything you need to play it tends to be pretty appealing to a wider audience and I think it's something that modern companies haven't tapped into enough. Those beginner boxes aren't as appealing as complete boxed systems because they usually only lasts you a couple of levels and then require you to buy the rules tome.

LotFP makes all armor 1 point more protective and in Labyrinth Lord, leather armor provides only 1 point of protection rather than two, and I'm sure there are plenty of other individual changes in other games as well, but none of these are as a result of the conversion process as DAC converts cleanly to AAC. Subtract DAC from a number (usually 19 to 21) to get AAC, and subtract THAC0 from the exact same number to get your attack bonus, and that's all there is to it.

As far as to why you'd want to use THAC0... habit, tradition and ease of compatibility.

To answer myself here with some clarifications:
Delving Deeper is based on the LBB (But includes the Thief class), is very complete and contains some interesting interpretation of the rules.
WB:FMAG is also based only on the LBB (Also including the Thief as an optional class), but much more streamlined. It's an updated version of S&W:White Box.
Iron Falcon is LBB+Greyhawk supplement, but seems rather incomplete, missing a few core ruels.
S&W has a bunch of editions, ranging from the previously mentioned LBB only White Box, a regular "Core" version including content from Greyhawk and a Complete version including content from all seven OD&D books. It is more streamlined than accurate.

Step 2: Roll d6 down the line, adding the result to each stat.
Step 3: Add the "flipped" results of step 2 (1 on a 6, 2 on a 5, etc.) to your stats as desired.
This results in an average ability score of 13, a little higher than the typical method for AD&D. You can set the defaults to 4 for an average of 11 when playing B/X, this makes scores of 17 and 18 impossible but considering how rare they are anyways that's not a big deal for me.

I used to run 5e at the flgs up the road from my job. I'd finish my shift, walk to meet my friends at the restaurant next door, then go up the road to the flgs and play til like 9pm. Watched pic related last night for the first time and thought it was a great DnD adventure, especially sneaking into the cave lair and fighting their way out. It was a nice change of pace from most movies that need the epic climactic battle into the enemy base where they fight 500 foes and survive.

Also I've gained a weird satisfaction from making it myself, like I don't need to consider my maps special and obsess over them like I did when I printed 1 or 2 sheets. Went on vacation 2 years ago and brought some hexpaper but only 5 sheets so every time I didn't like the end result I got frustrated. Shoulda printed 20....

I'm gonna be honest with you I have never made a nonwhite character or even considered making one. I don't have an issue with them I just never make them. Even a novel i wrote with 30+ characters I drew little doodles of all of them and none were black except for one I added later as literal tokenism in the truest sense of the word. And yes almost all are human because why would an elf with 3 hit points go adventuring? Why risk 900 years of life? If I was gonna live that long I wouldn't adventure til I was 700 at least. Actually that's an interesting concept for elf adventurers, in terms of fitting into the OSR and the fatalistic mindset.

>>77970391
Yeah I did as well. Though I question the place of a paladin in a game that revolves around getting treasure, and we also didn't fight many evil creatures, just generic dungeon denizens. The skeletons were really the only evil things. I was far more sad over my level 5 fighter dying. He had armor, a shield, a sword, a helmet, good stats. I was hoping he'd make it to level 9 and be a lord. The other high level fighters are only that level because we got a massive amount of treasure in one room so they ended up with a ton of XP to the point that they had to level up one session at a time despite having enough to go up 4 at once because otherwise it didn't make sense.

I'll do it.
With attack matrices your attack "bonus," so to speak, is baked in. Then when you stack bonuses (from high stats, situational bonuses, and magic weapons, as well as simply leveling up), you don't get to the point where you're adding +7 to a roll, but rather you're adding somewhere between +1 to +4 and comparing your roll to your attack matrix. It just keeps things that tiny bit neater.

However, the difference is minimal and DAC is a bit of a sacred cow, I'll admit. I still use it though.

I'd add WhiteBox Fantasy Medieval Adventure Game to this post.
It's super cheap, supports both modern conveniences (such as single save and ascending AC) and is even simpler than BFRPG (e.g. the Thief class is msssively simplified and IMHO improved with the Thievery skill), and on top of all that the art doesn't look like crap (I'd honestly have preferred an artless version of BFRPG). Overall a great retroclone for vets and newcomers alike.
Besides I just think OD&D is the superior version of D&D.

Use it for taking notes and marking on books mostly, but works pretty bloody amazing for mapping and solo rpg's since i can move around objects on different layers. basically acting like roll20 or maptools, but more tactile. good in between between physical miniature making and virtual.

I would say that every bit of HP damage you take reflects physical damage to your body, but that 1 HP of damage on a wizard with 4 HP is like getting stabbed in the arm 1 HP of damage on a fighter with 20 HP is like a light scratch on the shoulder.

The fighter doesn't have more HP because he'd be THAT much less harmed by getting stabbed in the arm, but because he's better at avoiding getting stabbed as badly and better at fighting through the pain.

Kind of like how if you fight a boxer and you fight an out-of-shape couch potato, you'll probably be able to hurt the latter worse with the same amount of effort, but a bullet to the head isn't going to hurt the couch potato by a wider margin.

What we have learned fom the internet is that a LOT of people, especially fat neckbeard manchildren, have a deep and burning need for you to shower them with approval while they jerk off.

Sometimes this is literal and occurs through telecommunications. But sometimes it is semi-figurative where a person's whole identity is giggling and tickling their genitals while they frame some kind of puerile narrative around the fact that they have been sexualized by cartoon animals or children or actively shitting assholes or whatever stupid, shameful crap infected their brains.

Everyone has been enticed by something that they probably should leave alone for the sake of their own dignity, self-respect and cultural mores. But if you are a shitty person and cannot process these feelings correctly, you can reach out over the internet and seek approval for them instead. You can find like-minded goblins and people who will tell you that whatever you want is fine. You can find people who will philosophically celebrate your lack of restraint.

End result: A gamer community full of people who think just about any context is fine to haul out their goofy sexual attention-seeking shit and wallow in it while somebody else is more-or-less compelled to watch.

No. You describe flesh wounds, super fiscal injury, etc. Same thing.
I think that anon's crit chart is retarded fiddly though.

You want my Godbound bestiary that I converted using the book's rules for 1 PC? Basically I removed multiple actions, toned down the saving throws, multiple attacks and straight die damage. I also slashed enemy Effort so the PC always has more Effort than them (just like a regular sized party). For HD totals, I used Scarlet Hero monsters as a guideline, where 25 HD is a big fucking deal. It ran well, but my player isn't that interested in combat anyway, so YMMV.

When this campaign restarts, I'm toying with the idea of multiplying all Dominion gain (from cults, adventures etc) by 4. I want the PC to massively reshape the setting like a full party and my house rule of giving dominion by killing Word-bound enemies wasn't enough.

I didn't know that actually. I just heard about them recently and haven't yet dived in. I'll shortlist SWN.

Deadlands/Rail Wars. I like the deadlands setting but it and savage worlds are pretty far from osr. There's some vague crossover in both being reactions to 3pf dnd bullshit requiring too much prep and being a slog to play, but that's about it.

also, aren’t androids on the windows os? again, not certain of specific programs, but all you need is a layer function, a select tool, and a drawing function for everything you need. There has to be one out there.

To elaborate, the original Deadlands system was simplified down for the Great Rail Wars wargame, and then built up into an RPG again to become Savage Worlds.

Sorry for the late response, I've been at work and didn't have my book on me.
There isn't a ton there for the modern stuff, like two or three pages of tips like "basic guns do 1d6 damage, two handed guns 1d6+1." Some ideas for keeping track of ammo for modern guns, replacing abilities for the Strong with more modern equivalents, computer hacking, implants... it's written deliberately vaguely so you could also reuse the system for other things. Similar to the "corruption" rules which could be magical corruption or radiation or cyberpsychosis or whatever.

>I have been many years running adventure games called tabletop role-playing games. From youth my heart has been inclined towards adventure games.
>I have spent many hours considering role-playing games, searching for the principle of the game, and have come to realize its nature.

>The room is a space that the game takes place within. Familiarity with that space is what grounds the game.
>Traps are threats within those spaces. Handling them impartially should be the same for every referee. It is necessary to have this knowledge as a part of your normal life.

>Playing a fair game with deceptions and dilemmas requires a certain spirit, one of service to a role, with no beginning or end. When you gain this spirit, you will know the rhythm of any situation. It will be effortless.

The three of you: filtered. It's autists like Courtney who keep the spirit of games alive by delievering books made out of sheer indulgence in their special interest. I couldn't give less of a shit if he believes humans & pigs are related, everyone has weird niche thoughts and ideas. If you don't you're probably oversocialized.

My favorite part is in one of the Megadungeon zines when he goes full United Field when describing the process of creatinǵ megadungeons. Or on another part where he says it's all real and part of his dreams and by writing he liberates himself of the infinite floors of the dungeon he builds around himself.

Eh.
CC writes stuff that LOOKS very useful but is only marginally so because of excessive autism. Like for example the NPC-reaction-dialogue thing that would be great in Pool of Radiance for the PC but would be a hassle to use at the table and there's no reason to do so anyway when you have a living, breathing DM to play the NPCs.
The best thing he produced was the Treasures generator.

Not that hard for a level 3-4 party if they can ambush it before it can breathe. They don't have that many hit points. A few characters may die, but the survivors will be rich. If it has advantage, or surprises the party, they are in for a world of hurt.

>> No.77988516

Each individual character is more likely to die, however the dragon is also easier to kill.
For example an adult red dragon will have about 40hp in OD&D; not too unreasonable.

A baby white dragon, from the Monster Manual, has 5-7 hit points and an AC of 3. So a good hit from a level 1 goon with a longsword could potentially kill one outright, though it would be incredibly dangerous all the same as attack damage and amount of attacks/breath weapon damage seemingly remains constant through all ages.

The descriptions of the games were bad too. Regardless, here's a few OSR adjacent movies that weren't included on that list.

Suspiria (Traps, witches, nightmare logic)
Fire and Ice (Frank Frazetta art, similar to wizards)
Excalibur (General fantasy shit)
Jason and the Argonauts (Classical mythology shit)
Braveheart (Medieval setting, barbarians, battles, politics, rebellion)
Zardoz (Bizzaro sci-fi)
The Warrior and the Sorceress (Bizarro, trashy fantasy)
John Carter (Books are in Appendix N)
The Dark Crystal (Dark fantasy, nonhuman focus)
The Indiana Jones movies (Pulp, traps)
El Topo (Weird western, dream logic)
Hammer Horror films (Classic monsters)
Heavy Metal (Gonzo fantasy and sci-fi)
Conquest (Trashy fantasy)
Dragonslayer (Fantasy shit)

Question, has Fellowship of the Rings been topped when it comes to providing a superb example of a dungeon crawl?

The trip through khazad-dûm ticks off so many boxes for me, empty rooms, the party alerting the inhabitants to their presence, attempts to wedge a door shut (including a hold-door spell), intense close-combat with a failed morale check, a serviceable and short backstory and a recent history that the company uncovers as they pass through its halls.

I've read Howard, Leiber and Moorcock and despite their strengths they haven't delivered on a dungeon crawl as strongly as Tolkien did.
