>How many heroic deeds has your character accomplished, /5eg/?
I've been playing an Oath of Heroism Paladin for over a year now. I've had some pretty cool moments over the adventure.
Of the top of my head, being the only party member to survive a Chain Lightning from a Morkoth, going toe to toe with a Fire Giant Juggernaut, and just last week I climbed on the back of a !not-dracolich and practically 1v1'd the him while the rest of the party dealt with some bonewalkers. A kind anon has even drawn my character in the past. All in all, it's been a blast.

How do people feel about stacking initiative as a homebrew change? For each source of advantage or disadvantage on a roll, the player rolls an additional d20. Each advantage/disadvantage pair cancels out. After all canceling-out, take the highest roll or lowest roll for advantage or disadvantage, respectively.

I.e FighterA is receiving advantage from five sources and disadvantage from two sources. Two advantage/disadvantage pairs cancel out, leaving three advantages. FighterA rolls 4d20 and takes the highest result.

Yay or Nay, i dont really like how binary it is when there are a zillion things that can apply advantage/disadvantage

>> No.77725055

Post the image, anon.

>> No.77725072

You could do some really overboard things with it- elven accuracy is a very sought after feat that does a lesser version of this. It'd be easier to get another source of advantage as well

Much has happened since this picture was drawn. Especially with the Skull Maul being converted into Dwarven Emperor's Maul.

>> No.77725119

You're better off just replacing Advantage/Disadvantage with +/-2 modifiers in that case if you want it to all stack and just math it out

>> No.77725178

well yeah, but thats kinda the idea, if you put the resources into getting quad-advantage you should get something out of it, plus disadvantages can end up fucking you just as hard

but more dice = more fun

>> No.77725234

>It's better than 5e
pfff the fuck it is. 5e is super easy to understand, and if you want more technical options in dungeon fantasy, GURPS Dungeon Fantasy is miles better than PF2e

>> No.77725236

>plus disadvantages can end up fucking you just as hard
Harder to get. You rarely ever suffer disadvantage from multiple sources, and in an advantage build you could power through them anyway.

>if you put the resources into getting quad-advantage you should get something out of it
Such as massive crit chance for crit builds? Paladins sure wouldn't mind that. Vengeance paladin with devil sight + darkness and it's channel divinity is an easy triple advantage, quadruple with elven accuracy.
What is this meant to accomplish exactly? It also renders fog cloud somewhat useless, as equalizing advantage/disadvantage was what it was for.

>> No.77725262

The system is set in place to be simple, it avoids situations where you're struggling to count the number of advantage/disadvantages thanks to staking of buff/debuffs.
But it shouldn't break anything, since it just raises (or lowers) the average rolls without going beyond the maximum already set by the d20.

>> No.77725293

I never got this. I played 3rd edition into 3.5, then pathfinder happened right? Was it because of 4e? The rules bloat was massive with pathfinder and the dead options and optimization ‘community’ just kept me away. Did it’s 2nd edition address any of that?

>> No.77725304

Fog Cloud gets better use for fucking over casters who need sight for their spells imo
Equalizing advantage is just a weird consequence of how the system works

>> No.77725314

>You rarely ever suffer disadvantage from multiple sources
if your DM does softball combat maybe, my group loves combat so running tricky combats is a large part of the game

> fog cloud somewhat useless, as equalizing advantage/disadvantage was what it was for.
this quirk of RAW has always pissed me off, thick fog shouldnt make hitting things the same as normal clear conditions, if anything it should just leave everyone with disadvantage

yeah its a little bit more bookkeeping, but like you said increasing the die number doesnt fuck with bounded accuracy which i wanted to avoid

>> No.77725325

>The rules bloat was massive with pathfinder and the dead options and optimization ‘community’ just kept me away. Did it’s 2nd edition address any of that?
No, the 2e players handbook is a fucking mess and incomprehensible unless you're actively playing and learn as you go.

>> No.77725350

>my group loves combat so running tricky combats is a large part of the game
So does mine. Still uncommon.

>if anything it should just leave everyone with disadvantage
Which you still don't accomplish with this change.

>Fog Cloud gets better use for fucking over casters who need sight for their spells imo
It's both. Casters are not common enough to work preparing for, and neither are pack tactics type of enemies. But since it does both, you're more easily justified in preparing it.

>> No.77725374

PF2e is still kinda a mess
I like what they did with actions and spells that can take varying amounts of actions for stronger effects

>> No.77725422

>still uncommon
to be fair, that could be just as much that there is no point in applying disadavantage from multiple sources normally, so why make that part of an encounter, just like people dont get the same conditions stacked on themselves

>> No.77725459

Stacking different sources can have its use since sometimes players or creatures have features that negate one
Like how many races have darkvision, or how Land druids don't give a fuck about certain hazards

>> No.77725523

Poisoned, restrained, some abilities and lack of vision, invisibile enemies.. there are ways to go about it if you want to stack it, but all you'd be doing is just shutting down weapon attacks. Saving throw based spells and cantrips still work, all it does is bog down the combat into 'miss miss miss' and buff advantage stacking for PC's. In fact, because of you designing encounters like these, they'll want to stack advantage even more, or start using lucky so subvert all their disadvantage in omega advantage.
"I close my eyes, drop prone and swing! Remember, I'm poisoned, so I roll 4 d20's.. now to roll lucky.. natural 20!" Just sounds even dumber than lucky usually does.

>> No.77725547

right but thats more about trying to cover the spread than it is about actually stacking the disadvantage

The main reason I and my players want to try it is cause you get situations where its like "the enemy has been blinded and poisoned, I have the high ground, and a spell/effect buffing me, what do i get?" Just advanatage, which you would still have if only one of the 4 things were true, feels wack

>> No.77725587

An easy fix for lucky in that system would be to remove a d20 from the disadvantage or add one to the advantages.

>> No.77725646

It's not the only ability that works like that though. The chronurgist's 2nd level feature does this too, off the top of my head. It just seems janky to try and change the whole system to suit these mechanics, when we're not getting that much out of it other than making disadvantage based combats slogs and advantage builds stronger (despite them already being strong).

>> No.77725711

thats a good point, but i just ban lucky on principle so thats a non-issue
saving throw based things tend to get mogged later in the game with the increasing presence of Magic Resistance and Legendary Resistances anyway, so throwing them a bone doesnt feel that bad

my players brought it up because several of them try to do a lot of support buff/debuff type things in combat and were quickly realizing it starts to become inconsequential past the first effect or 2. Plus, If we use this rule, its gonna be after the campaign has already been going for like 5-6 sessions so its not like one of them can all of sudden build some hyper-abusive setup.

>> No.77725737

I'm not the anon who wanted that advantage stacking system, just saying that Lucky shouldn't be your main concern. It's easy to fix.

>> No.77725950

Casters get better and better as the game progresses, they don't need the bone when they have the whole roast to themselves.

>were quickly realizing it starts to become inconsequential past the first effect or 2.
The bigger detriment is concentration, not the debuffs. Many different ways to control opponents.

>Plus, If we use this rule, its gonna be after the campaign has already been going for like 5-6 sessions so its not like one of them can all of sudden build some hyper-abusive setup.
Right, I'm reacting as if this were introduced as a general rule to every table- you might have the perfect circumstances where this works better than what we currently have does.

Every feature that let's you reroll and keep the second is a problem here. But sure, rework the whole system- nerf crit builds while you're at it.

>> No.77725954

>it starts to become inconsequential past the first effect or 2.
Maybe that’s on purpose?

>> No.77725976

Why does Lucky break the game? What’s the proposed fix that upends the system?

>> No.77726061

People get upset with Lucky's wording letting you pick any of the dice rolled
So if you roll with Disadvantage and use Lucky, it's really the same thing as using Elven Accuracy since the wording on the feat just lets you pick whatever die you want out of the ones that were rolled

fair enough, i came here mostly for people to tell me all the ways it could go wrong anyway

It definetely is, but what im trying to figure out is if its on purpose for the sake of streamlining and simplicity, or for balance

Tell you guys what, ill go ahead with implementing it next session, and report back in a couple weeks if it goes well or horribly

>> No.77726156

>> No.77727600

I feel like generally it's Barb 5-6/ Rogue 15-14, depending on whether or now you want your 6th level subclass feature from Barbarian. Barbarian doesn't get a lot from it's last 10 levels anyways. Expertise in Athletics combined with on-demand advantage from Rage make you very effect at grappling and shoving people, which most enemies aren't very good at resisting. Also let's you move people around in combat, which is good if you have casters that can setup hazards like spiked growth or flaming sphere or whatever.

>> No.77727613

If i took it to 8 should i pump int, con or take magic initiate warlock for hex?

>> No.77727652

Usually it's a quick and dirty two level dip in barb. You don't need to go 5 level for extra attack, as that delays your rogue features a bit too much when you can use reckless attack to hit your sneak attacks anyway. Level 3 berserker is an exception, because they can sneak attack twice per turn.
You can go 5 levels barb if you really like grappling- just keep in mind you either delay extra attack to level 6 or expertise to level 6 if you do so.

You start as barb, get your 2nd level in barb and then go rogue and usually never look back.

>> No.77727701

Get extra attack from the barb, then switch to rogue.

>> No.77727719

Yeah, I like this. Five barbarian levels and then five rogue levels? I doubt the campaign is going to go much past level 10 anyway.

Just out of curiosity, are there any higher-level rogue abilities that this sort of character really wants, if we end up going well past level 10?

>> No.77727744

Evasion is just about the top end for it, unless you have a subclass feature you really like. Thief rogues notably can use wands/scross and such to cast spells and still concentrate on them while raging because they technically can't cast spells, phantoms and psi-blades can't wield shields so they're a bit cucked, AT's get nothing, scout higher level features do nothing for you.. it's a mixed bag. AT always gets more spells though, which is absolutely worth it even on a barbarogue to cast when you're not raging for utility or before rages if it doesn't require concentration (such as mirror image and the like).

You lose out on medium armor if you do this.

Barbarian 5/Rogue 11 is the undisputed wrestling champion with Rage and Reliable Talent. Assuming 20 Strength and Expertise in Athletics, you're guaranteed at least 25 on any Athletics check, and 27 once you take one more level in either class as your proficiency bonus reaches +6. Probably more, since you have advantage, one of your rolls is likely to be higher than 10, so your average Athletics check result should be in the low 30s. With Extra Attack from the Barbarian, you're all but guaranteed to have your target grappled and prone in one action, after which you can freely stab them to death.

>> No.77728024

>What barbarian subclasses would you consider?
Berserker means you can sneak attack twice per round if you're frenzying- this just about doubles your damage and is crazy overall. Expertise makes exhaustion 1 hurt way less.

Otherwise, I wouldn't really bother with getting a subclass for barb. Wolf totem would work decently for supporting allies, ancestral barb can have you 'tank' by hitting enemies, disengaging forcing them towards you through your frontline, and when they actually hit you you reduce the damage with rage + uncanny dodge. (Read, since we aren't getting sentinel value here I don't think it's as good- sentinel is a big deal for melee rogues since it allows us to sometimes do reaction attacks for big sneak attack damage).
Zealot is as if you're getting an extra sneak attack die, so if you're worried that just rage damage + reckless attack isn't enough you can grab it instead. It won't really scale well though.

The subclasses outside of zerker (who doesn't want extra attack anyway) being meh is why I don't go for level 5 dips. Remember that you could have just dipped 3 into fighter instead for Battlemaster if you really didn't need the rogue levels on your barbarogue.

Actually yeah you’re right. Did you know you can give your entire party resistance to everything permanently? Just use astral projection, the effects of the wish won’t carry over.

>> No.77728842

Yeah, I feel sorry for people who miss this. One of the rules is that you can give 10 people resistance to a damage type. And with astral projection, negative side affects won’t be permanent.

Resistance to everything would double the health and healing effectiveness of your party.

What's the best depth to dip into Warlock, as a Rogue?

I'm currently at Arcane Trickster 5, and Archfey 1

I want to go to at least Warlock 2 for Devil Sight (setting is perpetually dim, and I'm sick of holding a big "fuck me up" lantern when I'm trying to be subtle), as well as a second Invocation I haven't decided on (and the 2nd Warlock spell slot).

But is it worth it to dip to Warlock 3 for 2nd level spell slots?
The Pact could also be useful, but probably only for another 2 cantrips.

And yeah, Hexblade would probably have been a better choice power-wise, but I don't think I could make it work.

A dumb question but:

When planning a combat encounter which set of guidelines are best for getting the most, um, predictable? Consistent? Which set of encounter-building guidelines is going to be the easiest to follow and will most likely result in encounters that are as close to being as challenging as intended?

The default rules in the DMG?
Or the variant rules in Xanathar’s Guide?

I gotta know which because in other games I’m notorious for making fights that are either too easy or too tough so I’m really looking for something that will curb that habit the most effectively

temp hp is like a damage shield, when you take damage you always remove temp hp before actual hp.

temp hp does not stack with other sources of temp hp, if you have two sources that grant you temp hp then you pick which source you want, so if you currently have 2 temp hp and someone grants you 8 temp hp, you would most likely choose to gain the 8 temp hp, it wont stack up to 10.
the only exception i can think of when you want a specific source of temp hp over the biggest source is Armor of Agathys, as while the temp hp from that spell is active you also reflect cold damage.

Features typically say how long the source of temp HP lasts but if there is no set duration its until you take a long rest.

Temp HP cannot be healed, once its gone its gone until a new source is granted, this is different from a spell like Aid that gives the target 5 real hit points for 8 hours (which can be used as a group-wide revive if multiple people are down)

if your at 10 hp and you gain 15 temp hp, your effective hp is 25 and you always lose temp hp before you lose real hit points, there is no hard cap on how much temp hp you can have, just that sources wont stack.

Have I done anything wrong here?
> Use Chronurgy wizard 10th lvl feature allowing an ally to cast Summon Greater Demons
> Summon Barlgura
> Use my own concentration to polymorph the demon into giant crab
> Metamagic extended spell on both of them
> My DC is 19 and Crab has -2/3 Cha
This means it cannot actually succeed on the save to break the spell, so I have 200HP of summons for 2hrs and if the crab is killed I just polymorph again for an extra 160HP.

Is there a flaw or rule I've overlooked here?

Came up with a few sets of houserules to allow Beastmaster Rangers to get better Animal companions at higher levels.

Simplest one was to allow them to upgrade to a companion of Cr1 and Large Size at level 7 and up to a CR2 at 11, coinciding with the archetypes other improvements. This puts them on about the same level as the creatures a Paladin can make their special mount with the Find Steed Spells.

Also have considered raising the limits of what they can get at level 3 such as any beast up CR 1 and medium, or allowing large CR 1/4 or even CR 1/2 at level three.

Also considered just going for a straight you can have any beast that has a CR equal upt to 1/6th or even 1/3rd your (Ranger) level.

Also if this was a fellow PC, she now has right to engage in PVP because you started it. Hope you like being bombarded with Eldritch Blast. And there's a good chance the rest of the party might join in.

And if it was an NPC I'd just sigh, have her consent, fade to black (nobody wants to rp these things at a table.).
