Have you ever tried chess puzzles? They may scratch that itch even better.

A beginner example, white to play and force mate in two moves.

(Chess puzzles are played as if an actual game in progress, thus you must account for the best moves as both sides and cannot assume one side will blunder and "help" the other side.

Same. I'd held out naive hope for a while that Oko and Labe might get banned, and maybe even Veil. But now, even if those got banned, it's clear that the rate of bullshit getting printed into Legacy vastly exceeds the rate that Wizards will ban cards from the format. That's been true for a while now, but it really feels like there's no going back now.

The worst part is the Stockholm syndrome that a lot of Legacy players have, where they keep insisting that the format is good right now even as it dies around them

In a certain sense, in many of those scenarios the oldfags are correct to say the game has “died”.
After all, the way the game plays out has changed many times for better and worse (usually flip-flopping every few years). The quality and output of cards has changed, and I would say the general trend is downward. Player faith in the company somehow reaches a new low every couple of years (which has now changed to every couple of months). This game is a phoenix, it does not die permanently at any point, but it continuously changes and seems to seek different demographics every so often. M:tG still makes an unwarranted amount of money and people still play, but I have to wonder what player turnover is like these days. When will the ratio of new players to quitting players finally fall so this poor piece of shit game can die for good?

if you assume that everybody else's picks are random, it simplifies the calculations, and you can use a hypergeo and say that you will see 15+14+13+.... etc cards in a draft, then that paired with the total number of cards in your cube and the number of copies of the card in question, together gives you all you need to use a hypergeo calc. just bear in mind that other people's picks are not random so your number will be slightly off, but it should be close enough for your purposes

The whole Urza/Whir Prison situation is so fucked up it's unbelievable when you step back and look at it.
When the card first came out you had absolute mongoloids going "LMAOOOO A 4CMC 1/4!!!!" and saying no deck would ever want this.
Then they put it in Whir Prison and Whir Prison, a niche deck that had been around for a while, started placing significantly better. People defended it by saying Urza was an OK card that just enhanced an already existing deck.
Then the deck bent over backwards to adjust its manabase to incorporate Oko and Veil, eventually cutting the Whir completely.
Then it lost Oko and just jammed in Uro instead.
Then it went 80cards to jam in Yorion because why the fuck not, and even doing this, it was several orders of magnitude stronger than the 60 card versions without Yorion.
Throughout this it was one of the strongest decks in the format. Now, 2 years later, it's irrelevant because it's been powercrept by even stronger shitpiles.

No, Omnath decks need consistency so they can just combo off and win, they don't need Yorion. They want to play Omnath and win immediately.
Because WotC enabled Oops All Spells to do a gorillion damage on turn 2 in Modern or Heliod Company to win off a dice roll casting 1 card at instant speed, every deck now has to deal with that and compete in that meta.
It's actually hilarious how fucked up this format is.

Do you know how a lot of blue-based legacy decks are about sticking a threat and protecting it until the game is over? threats like Oko, Jace, Uro or Delver?
Court is just yet another thing to resolve and protect that eventually wins the game by itself, as long as you're doing your job of controling the game right, it's essentially a 3 cmc enchantment that reads "at the end of your turn draw a card + and the beginning of your upkeep up to two players mill ten cards".

The best part is, even if your opponent manages to remove it, the card draw doesn't go away, they still need to hit you with a creature which is a lot easier said than done.

The immediate phyrexian arena pitchable to fow and with no life loss looks good, but it's the mill part i'm not so sure about.
I've learned it's often a bad idea to mill your opponents, and while selfmill is good, i've issues seeing how to really generate value out of it, considering you'll most likely be on miracle, or other heavy control build.
That said, i understand it's basically a 5 turns wincon if you stay as monarch, i guess it will simply be adapting the mill option depending on what deck is your opponent.
Any idea about how to get (realistic) value out of the mill part?

Not the fren you asked from, but the -very- old version of esperblade (the one with the intuition package) would have loved to get court of cunny. You'd end up selfmilling :
- cabal therapy
- lingering souls
- BS/STP/ponder/TS food for your snappies

Nowaday, i could see it used alonside cling to dust (and other escape stuff), Echoes of eon + hullbreacher/narset as a big payoff to destroy your opponent's hand and get a load of treasures.
Drown in the loch sounds really fitting too. The card would be nice in an updated version of esperblade i'm sure, of even straight UB. The important part with Cunny is to be heavy enough in removals to be sure to keep being the monarch, otherwise the card could backfire pretty hard.
I'm really liking this card, not broken but very rewarding if you manage to play around it, and potentially can double backfire if you play like a tardo, it's really what mtg should be, and used to be.

I noticed this jannie we have since few months is specifically targeting the posts who are on topic. You usually wont be b& for complaining about the game (though it could still happen if you are caught in his berserk ban frenzy), but if you DARE helping someone about slots or explaining why X or Y card are good/bad, it's insta-ban. What a pathetic excuse of a janitor, seriously.

This isn't exactly modern magic, but I couldn't find a more appropriate thread. I was wondering if there are any small time mtg-tubers here who are open to ideas for their channel.

I recently discovered an excellent series about Yugioh (yes, I know, but I played it as a kid and it's what got me into Magic) called "The Yugioh Progression Series" where in each episode two people each open a virtual booster box, beginning in the first episode with the very first set in the game's history. They each build a deck out of the cards they get and play a match. Then in the next episode, they open up a box of the next set chronologically, adding cards to the deck they built in the last episode. It was a really fun series that showed how the game changed over time and it really took me back to the early days of the game.

Anyway, I would love to see something similar done with Magic. Episode 1 they could open a virtual box of Unlimited, build a deck, and play a match. Episode 2 they'd open Arabian Nights and build upon their Unlimited decks. Episode 3 Antiquities, and so on. It would be a great long-running series.

Ok so how do you guys feel about SLD: Bob Ross

Guys what if there's an incredibly high financial barrier of entry to MTG? Could that be what's killing the game????

Really cool idea, but way too expensive.
I almost always play a mono colored deck regardless of the format, so I would like to have a full set of each of these. But given the price, I might as well buy unlimited lands.

Legacy, modern, edh, and pioneer are meant to be for long term players.
One guy at my lgs have been grinding standard since 96 and it isn't a big deal to him to get a promo foiled out legacy deck as it is just small investments over time that accumulate to a lot.
And the likelihood of his red blue delver deck rotating? He already have cards to go into green or black depending on what he wants, it won't ruin a guy like that.
What is frustrating is that standard is expensive. It shouldn't be viable to run a >$200 deck in a format designed to make the cards worthless a couple of months later.

Never thought I'd play mtg again, but friend and I have 14 unopened packs of WAR, so we're playing pack wars tonight.
I smoked him 20-0 life in game 1.
I'm up 1-0.

Don't be silly, anon. We both own multiple modern decks, but we lost interest in playing mtg after Ikoria released. It's Thanksgiving and we're spending time together so we found a way to make these shitty packs useful.

You can easily play a deck with worse land. There is actually some decent bi colored land that don't come tapped and are not too expensive. Of course you won't get the advantages of thinning the deck with fetches and the consistency of expensive manabase but you are not that far off.
You can make cheaper version of most modern deck unless they are based on a very expensive stapple (aether vial, chalice of the void, force of negation, etc).

That's not even expensive, nigger.
