I'd like settings where there are many types of witches.
The cute smol witches are the most common in towns with them knowing lots of smaller yet useful spells for everyday solutions.
The more formal collage witches work for the government and help other magic users in studies and know more combat and bigger spells.
Then we have the more traditional witches that are outcast and use more evil means of magic.
This magic could be very dangerous but a big that's holding it back is that many of these rituals are very complicated and most of the time kills said witch in the process. Many times they rely on potions that cause blinding and foul odors to attack enemies with close range spells or even short swords.

When last we were on, we discussed the role of witches in feudal society.
And how they could be said to have their own power structure existing seperate of the nobility.

Each witch has their own desmene.
A collection of families or a small town of which they are THE witch.
The witch protects that charge. Not from bandits, not from invaders, and not from criminals. Matters involving the clashing of steel are what the nobility concern themselves with.
She protects them from spirits, curses, becoming undead. She is the wise woman they go to for their sickly and lost.
If you don't have a witch, you're free game. Anybody can transform you, damn your fortune, or raise you from the dead as a servant. Without having to fear retribution or having their magic undone.

What's still left to discuss:
What tribute would these people pay to the witch? Taxes like they do the lord?
Why would a ruler isolate themself in a tiny cottage in the wildernis?

Consider the following.
That tiny cottage in the wildernis is like a fortress on a hilltop. You just can't see it.
All the spirits around it, all the plantlife and the animals, are loyal to the witch.
In any clash of magic, she has a distinctive advantage.
It has to be away from civilization because she needs to cultivate all sorts of life in a big chaotic garden to make it happen.
That's the strange and wonderous environment you have to walk through before you reach her.
The reason the cottage is tiny is because it's a poor witch, with only a single hamlet under her name.
A big city witch has her own tower with flying monkeys.

The witch doesn't collect a yearly stipend.
Instead, people donate whatever they can miss to her in order to come into her good graces and do their part helping the protection of their community.
The poor witch receives a basket with porridge and bread from the young girl in the red riding hood.
The rich witch receives handmade antique furniture from the local lord.
There's nothing official about her position. Nowhere is it put in writing that any land or village 'belongs' to her to be the witch of. She just has people that come to her for protection. That means no paperwork and contracts for what has to be collected, it's a fluid system.

Covens are sort of like the HRE. Each witch is a power onto themselves, they just sort of pretend to follow the general leadership of whoever officially rules when it suits them. If they push it too hard though then they're likely getting a VERY stern telling off.

No one witch is all knowing. Perhaps nearby witches will have a sort of gathering place where they can share information with each other as necessary? Be it seeking a more experienced witch for advice, or sharing findings in one's personal studies.
A witchmaster could be a respected sage who maintains and protects the coven location, as well as facilitating discussion and disputes between the other witches.

You know what all of this reminds me of?
Druids.
I mean actual historic Celtic druids.
They were the wisemen of their civilization too. And they got together in these forests to have their big yearly conference.
The only difference is, druids had the authority to crown kings.

Perhaps these witches are the remnants of the religious caste of a bygone age. When the people still worshipped the trees and rovers it were the witches that spoke for them.
The current ruling class introduced the current more organized religion, but they had to adapt it to witchcraft, because the population wouldn't have accepted it otherwise.

Lawyers who are schooled in the legalise rituals of demons to help enact contracts, mid wives who live in out of the way villages to provide aid and medical advice to their charges, scholarly academics who study all manner of subjects from philosophy to alchemy to modern electronics. Witches don't lead but they make a point of making sure the leaders are looking over their shoulder or to the edge of the crowd to see how the witch reacts to what they do.

Witches don't have leaders, but some witches are more not the leaders than the others.

Witches are like cats. They didn't much like one another's company, but they do like to know where all the other witches are, just in case.

I was raised atheist and never had any religious customs, but as I got older I only gained an appreciation for god. But I must admit I'm a pantheist, and not a christian and don't really believe in that faith.

But a lot of study in science and philosophy has be convinced that there is a divine fate, since everything at least on the atomic scale and above is deterministic. So everything was meant to be. I mean even our chemical nature is deterministic to the point where we know of chemicals that can easily alter behavior and thoughts.

I admit I too have had moments where everything lined up so perfectly it was beyond belief.
Still if you want to talk science and faith, there is something very unique with humans, that we and only we have had the sentiance to make things go this far. Sure there are animals that have great memory and communication skills that we do, but none that have built pyramids or written a single word. And in that I think there is something very special, even supernatural about humanity

>> No.72596638

>>72596524
To me the really impressive part of the human species is language. Language isn't supernatural, but It does affect our consciousness. How we ever developed it I do not know. but being conscious of abstract concepts requires you to know them and usually its as simple as giving the concept a name.
And to me that's really interesting. because ultimately language has a physical element, its a wave pattern propagated through the air and translated into electrical impulses in the brain that can cause chemical changes. (or in this case its a bunch of physical strokes being turned into data that can be processed by the eyes). Either way language is something that does exist in a physical sense, but it shapes our consciousness and perception of reality, and we're fortunate to live in a time when so many abstract concepts can be communicated.

The fact that we have concepts like magic and witches that exist in our imaginations and collective culture, but yet don't exist in reality. that is definitely something interesting.

You're right about humanity is very special. Thank you all for being you.

>having faith is now the counter culture
Oof. No, anon, don't, that's a classic and ancient lie. It's nothing new.

The time period I was talking about was the early 2000's and EVEN THEN Christians insisted they were 'now the counterculture'. Don't believe that shit. They've been pushing that idea since the 70's, trying to make being religious sound like the rebellious move, the cool move, the countercultural move. It still isn't. And in my time they even sweetened the deal by making christian skater punks a thing and having good ska punk bands.

It's cancerous to religion in general because it ties being christian to being unique and special. Which means when that inevitably wears off most people drawn in by that strategy leave just as fast, because they were there for all the wrong reasons.

You'll either grow out of that way of thinking too or become twice as jaded for still believing your faith makes you special. Which just leads to a very unchristian mindset.

Octopuses have the potential and have built self-referential stone gardens, but their lifespans are what limit them from being like us. Dolphins lack the dexterity. Many birds are quite intelligent but also lack the appropriate lifespan to develop anything significant, but what little they crows have is a lot closer to an intelligent mind than we want to admit.

You have to be honest about what details make us unique so you don't fall off a cliff of delusions after confirming we're simply "special".

Witches have subtle powers. The ability to summon or banish invisible spirits and make them do things.
The role witches play depends entirely on their environment.

In the deep dark woods where evil spirits mess with humans all the time, witches are village elders.
They are treated with respect and reverence and rule over a community of people they protect.
They can be just or injust rulers, but they are at the top of society nonetheless.

In the fertile lands, protected by the gods, witches are criminals.
The power they seek out is redundant with the blessings of the faith in its ability to do good. It is only sought for its ability to do evil.
They keep their magic hidden and use it to curse enemies or torment victims.

In the wartorn wastes, witches are weapons.
Every big warlord has a witch by his side to throw and deflect curses aimed at him.
The witch can not be independent, their power is useful but not a direct counter against a man with a sword.

Magical devastation occurs when a culture with one custom conquers a culture with another, and tries to enforce the way they do it unto a region for which it is wholly inappropiate.
An empire from god-blessed lands trying to root out the witches in a deep dark wood will result in an unprotected population ravaged by werewolves and fey.
A ruler from the deep dark woods granting special positions to witchcraft practitioners in fertile lands gives power to evil and petty magic users to do as they please.

>>72593823
I do know that, literally speaking, warlock just means male witch, but witch itself is a gender-neutral term, so why even split it? Personally, I dislike using warlock because I associate it with demons, hellfire, and casting explosive magic. Witches, on the other hand, I imagine as more subtle—curses, potions, and familiars, things that aren't show-y like how warlocks are typically portrayed in media.

They're fine, but honestly the best way to do witches is as a fantasy equivalent to sending your daughter to a nunnery.

Poor as shit and can't feed your kids? Send your daughter to the witches.
Daughter too ugly to get a dowry? Witches will pay you for her.
Daughter accidentally set fire to the cat, but you're poor as shit? Those witches will take her off your hands.

Then the Witch covens teach the girls to be useful members of society through magical and nonmagical means. Fortune telling, potion making, culinary arts, medicine, curse removal, curse application, etc. All that she'd need to put herself down next to a village and not get chased away with torches and pitchforks.

Or they eat her. Fifty fifty shot at that.

I always liked the idea of Witch as a profession. Like every small town or village near the wilderness needed a local witch to take care of shit like hauntings, random fairy hill popping up in someone's turnip field, or a local farmer fucks up a fairy tree stump on their property and the town needs the local witch to handle the supernatural shit that happens in their day to day.

Kings, nobles and wealthy men in large cities and castles might have a court wizard or mage on their payroll but a witch is a profession for a small town that has to deal with smaller local level supernatural things more often that does not happen in larger cities.

Because material things are mostly meaningless to a witch. Luxuries are just unnecessary crap to them, they are the kind of fierce creatures that could survive alone and naked in the most remote part of the woods even through the dead of winter, they are close to nature, self-sufficient, not reliant on the protections that the mundane masses need to keep themselves safe and comfortable. Way I see it, witches like to fly because it's a convenient way to get pretty much anywhere in the vicinity and it's not overly hard to do.
Wizards are more fond of magic gates and teleportation: it's showy, it's complex, it allows you to pop into a rival university to slap the lad who dissed your theorem on the effect of polygons on Mayer's flash spells.

That's practical footwear for some forms of witching but not all. More practical than shoes in some cases, but when you're walking on sharp rocks to pacify the demon causing the nearby volcano to act up and you don't have on the appropriate boots, or when you're flying on your broom at high altitudes in autumn and you can no longer feel your toes, or when you stub your toe on the stone circle you're using for your rites, then tell me how you feel.

The old adage goes that you can do the dancing naked in the moonlight witchery if you want but it's mostly for looks or for fun and isn't really necessary to the trade.

Witches do a lot of busywork around a small area where they live and work. Wizards spend more time in study, and when there's work that needs doing it comes to them.

The king needs a spell from the wizard who lives in the tower and doesn't get out much, the wizard doesn't go far and if he needs to then transportation will be provided. As a backup he can hold onto a teleport spell or of course use a broom, but he won't be seen on it daily, because you don't want to be riding it back from the pub on weekends.

Meanwhile a witch has to pick flowers that grow on the clifftops, delivery medicine to an elderly man, check on a woman who's expecting a baby on the outskirts of town, make sure her apprentice has milked the goats, see a family with a bedridden child, delivery mushrooms to the ogre in the hills and remind him of his deal to not go down into the valley to steal pigs to eat, and it's not even noon yet!

No, there's all kinds of different witch sects, but literally everything they know about this one was gained from a meeting from a bunch of angry villagers trying to round up support for a pitchfork lynch mob. They tuned out every bad thing she has done to the townies because some guy said that he overheard her talking to ghosts one time.
So now they're going to rush over to her before she gets pitchforked to get her to summon the ghost of the slain king (from The Spiritual Realm, aka, THE DARKNESS BETWIXT THE STARS) to ask who actually killed him.
It's like they haven't figured out that every encounter with magic involving death/life/spirits hasn't been a massive clusterfuck.

within my own setting, 'Witch' is specifically a traditionalist female caster (a male is dubbed a Mystic), namely they practice strict master-apprentice system (never having more than three students) rather than teaching whole classes in an institution. Witches tend to also be fairly secretive out of necessity due to keeping their practices hidden not just from the eyes of their peers but also trying to keep from drawing the attention of more hostile supernatural forces which can have eyes and ears even in the everyday world. Generally witches also do not have much in the way of hierarchy beyond master and apprentice, a fully realized witch/mystic is regarded as peer to their former mentor in the eyes of the greater community, seniority and experience is considered but in theory, full covens will listen to the young as well as the elders.

Wizards are institutional, standardized, and mass produced through school and classes designed to teach a lot of people basics and theories to serve nobles and other ruling class than anything else. Ultimately, a witch/mystic approach to magic is spiritual, a wizard approaches magic as secular. So literally "soul" and "soulless"

Warlocks (a gender neutral term here) are expressly wizards or Witches/Mystics who are considered traitors to their respective order. Like a Witch/Mystic leaving to join a wizarding school, a wizard taking apprenticeship under a witch and forsaking feudal oaths, or some ballsy asshole who just outright backstabs their order (an act that, despite witches and wizards not getting along will blackball you on both sides). Apostates are warlocks who have literally submitted to themselves to hostile supernatural wills and carry out their dark work.

I like the concept of witches in Re: Zero. That they are beings who rose through various means to such power that their mere existence puts a strain on the magic of the world and they became calamities themselves.
They not only warp the laws of magic around them but also the rules of physics and even logic.
