Build a 2000 point strike force army for that cool feeling, then build about 500 points of any other specialist Imperial Factions like Deathwatch, Grey Knights, SOS, assassins, etc, and you have a cool, fluffy force for various scenarios.

I used to have fun with them, they're very elitey so you need to have a planned use for each unit you take and then just roll with the plan, taking into consideration keeping units alive so they can achieve the function you took them for.
Very satisfying when the plan comes together and it's even fun when things may come undone and you strategise to plan Bs.
Jetbikes are filthy and decimate infantry, one game I took on Shadowsun with my Shield-Captain on Auric Aquilas with Veteran of the Blood Games and slew her in a 1 on 1 fight near a game's end, felt really cinematic and fun.
Less of a slog with less models to just shunt around mindlessly too, they automatically get a semi-narrative feel ala Necromunda gangs in playing them.
Also fun to laugh off enemy special weapons due to T5 (T6 on bikers) with multiple wounds and 2+/4++.
You'll also likely never lose a dude to morale due to Ld 8-9 and your units likely never going higher than trios.

Goblin Slayer's setting is basically to WFB what Lodoss is to D&D. They have the same races and the same overplot of chaos warriors from the north fucking shit up. As Tau approach the rank of ShasO, the sept color covers more and more of their helmet to denote rank.

Army Painter in Dark Crusade/Soulstorm always tagged the hero Shas O character's main armor with the sept marking color.

Shadowsun has full white armor. Farsight had Vior'la sept mark red covering his entire armor, too, to denote his status.

Put all this together, and you get that Sphere/expansion commanders are more rare/elite than just the highest rank of ShasO, and therefore their armor is completely covered in Sept-mark color.

The "orange" on the new Shadowsun is probably supposed to be Tau Ocher, and can be explained as either the painters wanted the model to pop more, so lore was thrown out the window, or as a hold-over of stealth/elite units using inverted scheme, with the army's main parade color for sept markings, and the sept color for the base armor color.

Mechanicus have a lot of pros in playing them, the main cons though are lack of psykers (and so defending against them), your MWs are mainly restrained to melee when for the most part Mechanicus is a shooty army, Skitarii are still squishy and meh Ld means some are going to just run off when their unit gets slapped and transports are rare even now.
Oddly also for a high-tech shooty army, you don't get a load of cheaper special or heavy weapons, for the most part they're on specific high-cost units or cost premium points to add to squads, or lack longer range to get higher S or AP.

Practically speaking, some skills must surely transfer. Fire caste soldiers should have a good idea of how to fly an orca, for example, and I'm sure some of them would have some diplomatic training for working alongside air caste and ethereals in warzones. Likewise, ethereals, air caste pilots, and water caste diplomats to potentially hostile nations must have some fire caste training on how to comport themselves if they find themselves in a firefight.

Do you think they stick to their practical roots and cross-train, or do they drink the coolaid so much that if a water caste diplomat ends up in a warzone they're 100% reliant on the fire caste to keep them alive?
