How does your playgroup see you and how do you see the people in your playgroup?

>> No.56620929

I want to build an orzovvl deck, but I'm not sure what way to go with it? What's something fun that can still hold its own at table? Are clerics decent? Kembal stax? Or pure life drain? In my group we all usually play with at least one combo to be able to close out games. Let me know what you guys think.

>How does your playgroup see you and how do you see the people in your playgroup?
We don't anymore.
Anyways, there's two others. I'm seen as the person who half the time builds cancer and half the time builds jank, and nobody knows how to react until after facing a new deck for the first time. Engineer guy is pretty cool; CS guy acts like he's an idiot, but his decks are probably the most refined out of the group. He switches deck the least, and spends years refining them. He loves ramp and tribal, and is pretty good at flying under the radar before dropping a huge power play. CS guy can be cool sometimes, but he spergs out over the smallest things. When he wins, he gloats for a good half-hour, and when he loses, he mopes for just about as long. It takes a very specific set of circumstances for him to be chill, but when he is, he's pretty good to be around. He loves red combo decks, but hates storm and tutors. He takes apart a deck any time people focus him while he's playing it.

Try this guy. Put a bunch of different life gain effects in your deck and then either exile all of your opponent's problem creatures or make Karlov unblockable and take a player out of the game. Exquisite Blood/ Sanguine Bond fits with the deck theme as well as being a game ending combo.

Yeah sure, such and open and inviting format

>> No.56621339

It depends on who you ask

The casual players think I choose one person and hate them out of the game. (Not true at all I just play aggressive decks and have proper threat assessment)

The local retard calls all of my decks stupid and broken (I play doran lmao)

The competitive players think I play gimmick decks that sometimes can squeeze out wins if they focus eachother too hard (this is the most true).

The way I see them is

The casual players are okay dudes but really bad at making decisions if they haven't run the deck dozens of times beforehand

The local retard is a retard that plays barely altered precons then bitches about the powerlevel of everyone else

The competitive players are also cool dudes but spend way too much money on this game and are sometimes pretty unfun to play with

EDH is pretty awful as a pick up and play game. It really requires a group of people to understand each other to be fun. Else it always devolved into a nuclear arms race, which plagues casual groups as well. I fix this by having 4 decks with me at all times. They're all tuned to have play against each other, so it's fun. the problems usually come up when you play against new people who don't understand each other. Everyone wants to do something different. In my playgroup we don't like durdling forever. So all of our decks have some kind of infinite combo to close out the game. It applies pressure and makes the games interactive. But that's our play group, others may differ.

>thread question
They see me as a threat, no matter what deck I play, or what stage of the game. Sometimes their decision making gets paralyzed by fear of what answers I may have, sometimes they try to take me out at all costs (like, leaving themselves wide open in a 6 man game every single turn, using everything they have on me). My decks aren't even that good, they just have cohesion.

It's kinda funny how the deck I put the most time and effort into has been performing worse than some of the ones I threw together with minimal effort.

Pic is my main squeeze right now, the deck sorely needs cabal coffers, other that that and some other goodstuffs, It runs fabulously

The guy who wins a lot and typically needs to die ASAP. I don't even play anything competitive, I mostly just play decks that tend to get out of hand in the late game, like Kruphix and Atarka.
The only reason I ever make it to that point most of the time is because I'm good at politics and my board is usually non-threatening until it's too late.

Janko Fett, I'll bring some weird and shiny tricks to the table but usually I'm just fodder for stronger decks.

I pulled the Green and White Praetors + Genesis Wave and Hydra from Iconic Masters, and now I'm pretty much obligated to build some kind of green deck. I also bought the Planeschase big box, so the Thromax devour deck is also gravitating towards whatever green monster I end up trying to assemble.

I'm the biggest threat and therefore receive most of the hate. If there are several people who are open and could take a free hit, I get it every time. Doesn't bug me unless someone just isn't thinking and is hitting me because they still think I'm the main threat when another guy is clearly going off.

One guy is a bit of a dope. Makes stupid plays and doesn't update his decks often enough. He could make them really powerful with his collection, he just enjoys playing more than deckbuilding.

Another guy is a tryhard but has no imagination so just netdecks and never deviates. Doesn't understand the value of things like card draw and will mysteriously use cards just after he's seen me use them well. He spends the most money and gets the most salty when he loses, especially when he's brought in a new deck he just spent all kinds of money on.

The other guy is quiet but definitely the best of us at this game. Got us into it, kinda. Doesn't have completely unique decks (and to be fair, neither do the rest of us) but squeezes every ounce of value out of every card. You really don't know how he'll win. I manage to get him using politics mostly. Manages to fly under the radar a lot which is probably his biggest strength. Not an insult

The pre-cons give you an okay jumping-in point and if they have lots of cards you need and you think you'll enjoy them, go for it.
Otherwise I'd find a commander you want to run and build them from the ground up. edhrec can be very helpful for finding a commander you like, what staple cards any given commander deck runs, and it displays the prices of everything so you can work within your budget.

Also, welcome back to Magic anon!

>> No.56632365

A few of the pre-cons have commanders that don't explicitly have to be built tribally, and are in fact better that way.

An example would be Taigam- both versions(White-blue from Dragons, blue-black from Wizards) lend themselves even better to spells-oriented decks than they would to either tribal strategy. Ramos (Dragons) would be an excellent commander for just about any 5c deck, and Kess(Wizards) is my favorite spellslinger deck. Mairsil(Wizards) can produce some fun, janky combos for the whole family to enjoy (or cry about).

>> No.56633072

Skipping your turn doesn't seem worthwhile. I'd just fight through it with tokens. Tireless Tracker and Loam/Crucible lets you truck through a Smokestack on 2 with minimal effort. At 3+ you really need Elspeth or something to be completely unhindered.

Smokestack, even if it's just on 2 or 3, doesn't take long to cripple the rest of the table, especially if they're under a Tangle Wire or Winter Orb too.

Ive read up on fees and the like and its nearly the same as TCGPlayer.
My only question is dealing with tracking. Ive heard 100 times over that I have to pony up for delivery confirmation or Im going to get scammed. Yet every time Ive bought singles or playsets off TCG/eBay theyve come in basic bitch white envelopes with no tracking. Ive also sold a handful without tracking on eBay without any issue. Am I missing something here? Whats the point of selling a 5-10 dollar playset if tracking will cost me 3 dollars.

I play in a very high power group and we're brainstorming on how to make him less shit. The decks we've all tried so far have a lot of spot removal and never really run out of cards.
Our ideas so far:
>give him +1 attack and make his body relevant through evasion
>add stax effects or other countermeasures to combat all the broken UGx shenanigans
>add instant speed x costing burn to cast EoT before own turn when nothing needs to be removed

The deck has no problem removing singular large threats but it cant deal with constant refills and more threat dumps.
If it matters the major decks for Scorp to beat are Scarab, Riku, and my Yidris

I'm the eternal challenger that put political pressure at the table because i know almost every synergies of the deck i'm facing, i draw hate eventually for that matter..
Also am the only mono black player and the experimental deckbuilder of the group so i Can go under the radar pretty often in middle game.
Eventually i got the most mana death any player would'nt want at every single worst moment, like 5 cards starting hand is pretty casual for me although my decks are pretty standard regarding Land count (around 38 lands).
Regarding my playgroup (8 edh players that started together 6 years ago)
Player 1 is the best deckbuilder i know, started with marath i think. Plays lot of goodstuff and manarock. Playing maelstrom wanderer goodstuff and kruphix with drazis and extraturn, often the biggest threat and my favorite target.
Player 2 is good control. Playing karador combo or edric flyers with success

Built most of his deck out of decklists from edhrec or mtgtop8(when we played 1v1) so doesn't play his decks well. Owns the ur-dragon, proshh, meren and oloro cancer.
Player 5 is typical secure player that get bored when not playing his turn (fucking long to play). The most stoned person i met that play the most secure decks like trotrani huge lifegain or rhys token.
Player 6 is special Guy that smoke weed every breath and get bored while not playing an whining at every other player for them to play too slow. Special jank decks, like nekusar or ultra aggro krenko.
Player 7 is tribal Guy, not good at deckbuilding but set the fun level to a maximum level at the table. Owns elfball and sigarda Angel tribal
Player 8 is player 1 Lil brother, use to play standard competively so good player with A- deckbuilding skills, owns teysa dark apostle deck.

The obvious build around me commander is Blaxos but then you don't have access to the card advantage from Green enchantress creatures/effects or from the standard run of the mill Blue draw spells.
Selesnya was the traditional color combo with shit like replenish, enchantresses, privileged position and sterling grove but Esper obviously has the powerhouse that is Zur and Zur accessories and access to great Black enchantments like necropotence as well as the entire breadth of propaganda effects.

So I've lurked around these threads awhile, and recently I met a group of people to play EDH with, finally, so I got the Edgar Markov tribal deal, fleshed it out real nice, and now i'm feeling something new.

Do you guys have any advice for Blue/Red burn for EDH? I've literally never played anything but black/white, with the sole exception of the Vamp Tribal deck, and i'd like to experiment.

I've decided on this guy (unless you all have dif suggestions). I've heard things like Reverberate and such really make this work, being able to re-play the same burn over and over.

Plz help lol.

Yes and no. If you build the list everyone runs, it's pretty boring, but if you actually make an enchantress deck, it's pretty good.

Wild Research, Jokulhaups, cheap repeatable enchantments like Mark of Fury for enchantress effects and Empty Throne.

I'm looking into building a series of 10 extremely low-power commanders for an absolutely idiotic idea that involves combining Pentagram and/or Kingdoms with Planechase, as well as Rivals of Ixalan if there's a way to force that to work with five players.

Because this will naturally be as lolrandumb as an Un-Conspiracy-Pauper cube or some other unholy abomination, I've decided I may try to prebuild decks that are far weaker than usually playable, but still reasonably fun to pilot.

Looking to represent all 2-color combinations under different commanders, and here's what I have in mind so far.
>Daxos, Gwafa, or Lavinia
>Taigam, Sidisi's Hand or Dralnu
>Neheb or Tymaret
>Radha or Dragonlord Atarka
>Tolsimir or Mirri

>Vona, Kambal, or Vish Kal
>Jori En, Arjun, or Nin
>Glissa, Skullbriar, Ishkanah, or Rhys
>Munda or Adriana
>Kaseto or Vorel

The idea came about while I was dicking around with the idea of a Boros list and tried my hand at a quick Munda brew. I still haven't decided on any one commander for any color pair- if anyone's got suggestions, even if those suggestions are "neck yourself for trying this awful idea", I'd like to hear them.

Pic semi-related, as a reminder that there was a time I was so autistic I'd have probably tried to do custom commanders for this already atrocious idea. I'm pretty autistic still for trying this, but at least this time there'll probably be more beer and less 'tism.

Help me out of my autism, /tg/.

I've been having trouble on certain thematic archetypes I want to build but never could get past a Commander for reasons:
1) It has left an underwhelming impression in a 50-75% group
2) Theres always the "There are better options" scenerio
And 3) The time it takes to make the deck is incredobly staggering in my currently life style where I dont even have the time to devote hours into it.

It also hurts that I restrict myself to one of each color combination and no repeats of generals. The only exception to this rule are joke decks (Ex: Zedruu Auctioneering, Mimeoplasm Ooze Tribal etc)

I currently want to do these
>+1/+1 counter deck
I want to use Skullbriar, but dont want to miss out on using Reyhan in thr Command zone or use what Blue has to offer.
I want to use Reyhan+Ishai but I'll miss out on consistancy.

>Steal Stuff
I want to make a Scarab God deck but I'll miss out on Green's ramp.
I want to make a Mimeoplasm deck but I'll miss out on Scarab God being just a better Commander in general

I want to build Aurelia but RW is a shitty combo to work with
I want to build Samut but I'll miss out on having evasion in the Command Zone
I want to build Tana and Bruce but being locked out of Sword of Fire and Ice/Light and Shadow sucks with Bruces ability
I want to build Godo/Nazahn because they are consistant, but each lack a certain color.

I want to build anything but Meren, but other colors add variety
Whereas Sultai Sidisis and Karadors playstyle didnt fit my tastes.

So yeah. Rag me all you want for being autistic about this. I just need to find a solution other than "wait a week for the next meetup to test a new deck".

I'm not the only one who has these problems, right?

>> No.56640714

I don't have a list on me but I can probably build one from cards off the top of my head
A lot of people make the mistake of thinking it's an agro deck, and while it can eliminate a player very fast for a creature deck, it's real power is in its ability to keep coming back time after time
Trample, unlockable, removal ramp and draw
That's what you need, other stuff like a grave Titan or other creature that are good with one or more of the above also deserve a spot
Hydras, especially
Lifeblood Hydra
Managorger Hydra
Mistcutter Hydra
And Primordial Hydra benefit greatly from any counter shenanigans you have in the deck
Your commander is going to get big (probably) so greater good or at least life's legacy/momentous fall will help
Slow down opponents by having a discard or sac sub theme I find bottomless pit, hypnotic Spector and sadistic hypnotist work well
Remember to pack targeted creature and art/enchantment removal
Bam from there you should be about to at least compete at most tables if not make a few enemies at the table
And if you are making enemies you are doing it right

>> No.56641037

I'm not. Sometimes combos are only way to end games anyway, so even if everyone don't like them, they're still a necessary evil.
People still hate them, because they think that they're above it in morals, like they're the dudes in Dark Souls who think that you should always bow to invaders and invasion victims and cry about lack of honor if someone doesn't do it and instead just backstabs them while they're locked in animation.
Like infinites are somehow cheaper tactics as opposed to combat, and usually getting infinite tokens and winning through combat is okay in their books as well for some reason.
I have NEVER seen a proper justification as why infinites are bad, explanations have always been "muh feelings, muh honorabru geemu, muh inexpensive tictacs"
