Should Tau saturate their forces with markerlights? That is to say, it takes 2 markerlights to bring a standard Tau BS3 up to BS5 (diminishing returns past there), thus "maximum efficient markerlights" would mean bringing enough MLs to have all your forces at BS5 as often as possible. As an example, Pathfinders produce roughly half as many MLs as they have men each round they get to fire, so a group of 5 will fairly consistently produce 2 MLs, which is enough to supply another unit. Is it important that every damage unit be coupled with a sufficient source of MLs? Do you take even more MLs for that for when some are inevitably killed? Or do you take less?

Essentially, what is the proper ratio of ML-units to non-ML units?

You don't need quite that many, as there are times when a unit needs to reposition rather than shoot outright. I would say it is better to aim for around a third. Have the ability to have half your army boosted to BS 5, or all of it to BS 4, outside of other uses.

Obviously this won't go perfectly, so from there its a matter of which units need markerlights the most.

Otherwise, they have their ades accompanying them in battle, so they throw they spear to them, plant it on the ground or whatever, use their smaller swords and continue their advance. When the spear is reloaded, it's thrown to them and they're good to go.

I wanted to buy into Deldar when they were released in 5th edition. 27n but I didn't have the money. Now that I do, I just sort of pulled the trigger on a SC and some wyches, the succubus, and the venom. Then I got another SC and the Scourges on a whim for a good discount, and then I bought a lot with the rest.

I like Deldar because they're basically cartoon villains, but I also like Wyches and the idea of them treating the battlefield like a big arena match.

Thanks. Finding motivation is hard, and keeping it is harder.

Already have. Seemed appropriate all things considered. I would probably buy one if I saw a hard copy in the store, though. With 8th around the corner, maybe it wouldn't be the best idea.

A pathfinder is 11 pts. BS 3 means they hit half the time, so 2 pathfinders for 22 pts will give you +1 BS to any other unit. Imagine if fire warriors or crisis suits cost 44 points extra.
For 13 pts a model you can take marker drones. Slightly more expensive but more mobile. Downside is nonscoring, lower BS, and doesn't contribute a real gun. A pathfinder can still shoot his carbine or sit on an objective.

It'd be better to take the space from the deployment zone. Technically, you're supposed to measure from the center of the board. On something 4 feet across, you measure a foot from the center, leaving both players with a 12" zone. Do this with 3 feet and 6 inches, and you're left with 9 apiece.

Similarly, for a 6 foot board, you measure 2 feet from the center to give each player 12 left. To keep things even for longer deployments, you'd want to cut it down to 5.5 for a similar result.

The important part is distance from your opponent's deployment zone.

Why are Orkz considered bad? I understand that they might be bad at a competitive level, but on a casual level they seem fine. I casually played against an Ork player for years and only beat him once, though that was before formations were a thing. A shitload of bodies running across the table to drown a squad in attacks, mixed with huge volumes of fire seems pretty decent to me, he trounced my Salamanders handily most of the time.

I hate Eternal Crusade for being such wasted potential. Playing it right now, and there's a decent core of a game, not revolutionary or fantastic, but decent. But it's surrounded by a shell of dumb shit like races for stun-locks, constantly sending me to fucking Frankfurt for servers, and the lack of ability (so far as I can find) to choose a map or game type.

In fact, I can't seem to even find a list of map or gametypes because the main website has only the simplest of basics about the game and the wikia and 1d4chan are so out of date that I assume they haven't been updated since 2014. The wikia still has a page on faction war commands. And googlefu has failed me to get anymore than those two website, and forum posts about the game, but on unrelated topics.

Ballistic skill 2 across almost the entire army means that what looks like an impressive amount of firepower in theory falls flat in practice. They'll struggle to do as much damage as marines in shooting. Once in melee, they're reliant on volume of attacks. They can't get power weapons aside from power fists, and no matter what their enemy will probably swing first. This means they will almost always take damage before they can swing on the charge. The lack of armor also lowers their odds of survival, which in turn means they're more likely to fail their low leadership.

This is precisely why I refuse to go Ynnari. There's already an entire Codex with better options in every single way, but they're separate. We would play 1500-2000 point games. He would have maybe a Trukk or two, maybe a Battlewagon. Always brought Kans. He would always outnumbered me 3+ to 1, with maxed out Boyz squads.

That's what I thought too. No matter what I brought, he always had an answer for it, and his rolls were always exceptionally good. I never ONCE swept him or deleted a unit in the shooting phase, no matter how much I focused it.

We once fought a 1000 point game, and his Big Mek killed himself and his entire squad of Lootas when his SAG failed, very first round of the game, losing him over 1/3rd of his army in points. He just ran his Boyz forward and murdered my army, no problem. It was the most frustrating thing. I don't think Orkz (or any Codex, for that matter) should just job to Marines, but for fucks sake, they're just Boyz and they wouldn't die.

I'm pretty sure he cheated with movement, giving himself extra inches and being super generous with assault participation, all 30 Boyz routinely got to help in an assault.

You aren't supposed to take 1d4chan seriously, you dolt. You are exactly the reason why newbies shouldn't be told to get their lore straight from 1d4chan or TTS. Those are parodies and taking your understanding of the setting or factions from them instead of source material makes you look like a moron. A loud, vocal moron.

The only thing stuck-up and arrogant here is your hot opinions.

I'm getting that impression as well. With boyz being 6 points base, and the other stuff he brought, him having you outnumbered 3 or more to 1 just isn't feasible from a points perspective. 2 to 1 is doable, but if he was ever gettig 4x your number without you going heavy on expensive weapons and upgrades.

Never failing morale is also strange, if his rolls were that unusually good. It all adds up to be very sketchy.

Thing is though, if even with all of that he's still barely winning kill points, I think you could see why Orks are weak.

I am currently working on this list (my first) which will probably take some more time, but I am already thinking about expanding it with some more mechanicus units and mainly Cawl.
Which would allow me to take Grand Convocation which gives vehicles PotMS.
This got me thinking about building squadron of Onager Dunecrawlers (2 or 3) with mixed weapons, probably Neutron Laser and Icarus Array, getting that invlun and PotMS from Dominus/Cawl who will stay with them. Now sqaudron has to shoot same target, but PotMS allows model to shoot at different targets (one could even take those heavy stubbers to fire them at primary and then fire main weapon at whatever). But does this really work this way?

The fact that the melee system is STILL BROKEN AFTER 2 YEARS is completely upsurd. They even did a poll recently where the devs asked the players what they wanted done next, and the very top response was "FIX THE FUCKING MELEE SYSTEM. WE DON'T CARE IF YOU HAVE TO CHANGE IT OUT FOR SOMETHING ELSE ENTIRELY". NOPE, FUCKING IGNORED. "LETS GO AHEAD AND MAKE MORE PAY2WIN WEAPONS"

It's complete bullshit. The system works like this
> You have 3 attacks. Fast Attack, Defensive Attack, Power Attack
> Fast attack beats power attack, defensive attack beats fast attack, and power attack beats defensive attack
> Except if two players through the same attack, the one with the better melee weapon automatically wins.
This seems like a good system, except for one problem

It's so fucking bad. Basically if you are a melee class, you can just spam right-click to automatically win every fight in the entire game. Because everyone else's defensive attack does absolutely fucking nothing, and you have a better melee weapon for simply being a melee class, you AUTO-WIN.

Baneblade's are unfortunately very easy to kill. I managed to destroy one immediately in a 1500 point game with just a single unit of Assault Terminators. In terms of sheer usefulness, from what I've seen a Stormlord (or whatever that transport variant with the gatling guns is called) seems to be the most useful of them. Their main gun can tear MEQs to shreds and it's basically a Land Raider Crusader on crack.

Huh, interesting. Don't the FW Knights' rules state that they're eligible to fill the LoW slot in any detachment from any Army of the Imperium, though? Oathsworn isnt a Formation but their Allied Detachment equivalent.

Maybe if they had WS5 and combat drugs were only +A/S/T instead of 50% worthlessness like +1I they'd be better.

Still, I'm stuck with them, and I'm using them. If they hold up a unit for a few turns, then that's fine. They're supposed to be putting inn's show.

Like what you like, man. I'd be lying if I didn't love Dark Reapers. However, I do not like Ynnari at all. Besides not liking the fluff, the rules make people groan, at least around here. In all the games I've seen, only the Ynnari player was having fun.

As for variants I agree 30 shots per turn if stationary and with a psyker to twin-link is pretty nice by itself. >> No.52405404

Yes, finest is the name of the resin formula that GW came up with to replace metal. It was supposed to be able to be used in the same molds so they didn't need to make new ones and could just switch over to it quicker. Sadly that worked about as well as a lead ballon, and lead to the nickname Finecrap. Because it was lighter and they ended up having to resign everything that went fine cast and making specialized molds for the resin. This lead to some improvement in quality but for the most part a lot of people are still very bitter and the resin does have many flaws. Brittleness being one and softness being two, the third is sometimes a bad casting will sneak past Quality Control (if GW has them) and you will still get one that had airbubles in the mold and thus holes in the sculpt. I believe GW has a replacement policy for Firecast sculpts that are bad. Honestly the fact that they aren't removing and recycling these before they hit packaging is a failure of quality control.
To be fair one would think that they would use their proprietary name for their proprietary resin.

Here is the problem.
They aren't selling because they are priced too high. The price is a detractor from buying. their common infantry unit's current retail price is 80 for 10 units. When you consider you will need at least 2 of these, you can see why people aren't playing this army. The cost of entry is several times that of every other army.

>> No.52405863

What the fuck are you talking about? Do you know what an economy of scale is? GW is the biggest player in the wargaming industry by leaps and bounds. They almost certainly have the infrastructure to produce models at a better PPU ratio than any of their competitors. There's literally no reason for them to outsource production if they intend to maintain proper quality control.

The immolators sell out instantly too. The only reason the metal ones don't sell as quickly is because they're 80 dollars for a basic squad, but that'll change soon when they release plastic sob.

>> No.52405886

The price has nothing to do with the costs of production. It doesn't cost any more to produce a squad of sisters than it does any other resin model they make. They're expensive because they're competing with plastic sets.

/tg/, I had an Epiphany today. It just occured to me after spending years of collecting space marines, that I started this hobby wanting to run Mechanized Tau. And I have some Fire Warriors from a kill-team box that I'm now assembling.

So here's a list I've written up now for what I want to run in Tau. My general strats for it will be to play a thoroughly mechanized army completely true to the original Tau fluff. There's 6 Devilfish transports with all dudes with pulse shotguns inside, and they all go to try and get as close to the enemy as possible. I actually want to run this list as makeshift Tau Melee.

I can't wait for 8th edition to roll around and make melee more viable! Who else is hoping for removing Assault Transports and just letting people always assault from transports?

>> No.52406259

I'm hoping for being able to assault out of any transport that hasn't moved yet. I play Chaos I kinda need that. I'm also hopeing they copy and paste a lot of the rules from the AOS Seekers as those are seekers who are worth their points. Able to run and charge, and have a high speed value. They are very, very nice. Better than the current 40k seekers.

1. take only 3/4 teams of breachers, they're decent but spamming any one unit just isn't effective
2. put disruption pods/seeker missiles on those devilfish since jinking doesn't affect them
3. Take something like an armoured interdiction cadre or 2/3 hammerheads
4. pick up a ghostkeel for optimised stealth cadre, a ghostkeel isn't too cancer and isn't too out of place

One is 3 teams of those with 2 stealth teams and a pirannah, and gives you a free seeker missile shot whenever you land 3 markerlights in a volley. Personally, I would take this even if it cost a markerlight to use, and if I had to spend 8 points per missile up to a maximum number. I like the idea of forward units calling in artillery strikes

The other is the one with pathfinder teams and broadsides, where the pathfinders get shrouded if they don't move, but the broadsides can overwatch for them at any range. That actually encourages putting the pathfinders more forward instead of balling them up in a gunline, as well as taking rail rifles for that 60" supporting fire range. I don't have any broadsides, but that's just a sweat mental image.

But no, instead of these everyone takes Riptide wings

>> No.52407326

The actual makeup of the formation itself is perfectly fluffy. 6 tactical squads, options for what sorts of assault or devastator squads that company uses, space for a dreadnought, it's a perfectly fluffy list.

The problem is that the bonuses are totally out of whack for balance. Getting Obsec on everything? Strong, but not too crazy. Getting some extra tactical doctrines? Sure, makes sense, they're clearly following the codex at least somewhat closely. Buying all the transports for free? That's just insane. It's anywhere from 300 to 500 free points as long as you're willing to go out and buy 10 transports. Not only that, but it actively discourages certain options, since taking a bike squad or a jump pack assault squad gives up a free razorback.
