Android Netrunner has one of its cycles there - it's not too much different from anywhere else (partly for game reasons), but it's pretty cool.

Notable features include political activism, meditating to make yourself a better hacker, bollywood being applied to sim-sense entertainment, producing food on a super-intensive scale being important, quite a lot of manufacturing, respect for the past, and even greater wealth disparity than usual - the cycle before being set on the west coast of the US kind of highlights it, as does the presence of servants which haven't gone out of style (they're just androids now)

Really can't go wrong with Neuromancer style

Although if the group is really fun I like to run something that is a mix of Jet Set Radio and Hackers set in the near future. The players are hip youths sticking it to the Man (and their parents) through light terrorism. More focused on infiltration and sabotage than combat. Everything is superflat and painfully cool but the price of failure is nerve stapling. Players are encouraged to come up with cringe-worthy slang. Usually run with Mini6

Don't know if really counts as cyberpunk but a game set in the BLAME! superstructure would be pretty kick-ass.

Then don't play shadowrun. I get that it's popular but it's also pretty much the only cyberpunk game with magic.

I don't get why there aren't more Cyberpunk2020 threads here. There is obviously a demand for straight cyberpunk, if more threads were made about it less people would have to use /srg/ to get their fill.

I think shadowrun is actually a lot of fun -not necessarily for being good cyberpunk- but for some reason it's often treated like the only game in town. Which leads to a lot of unnecessary bitterness.
If more attention was given to CP2020 or GRUPs Cyberpunk there really wouldn't be the problem of SR being the go to game, which it really shouldn't be.

(fuck now that I check, there really aren't really any other cyperpunk games out there, that's crazy)

There are other cyberpunk games, though you kind of have to go into the indie space for them. TechNoir is supposed to be pretty good. The Sprawl is an Apocalypse engine game set in William Gibson's universe from the novels of the same name.

>I don't get why there aren't more Cyberpunk2020 threads here.
Probably because it's 26 years old at this point

I don't want to start the "we cyberpunk nao" shit, because the genre is speculative near-future fiction, written with some pretty smart and astute writers - it shouldn't be a surprise that some of it rings true.

But that's not helpful when it comes to the game being more popular - it seems outdated, even if the game itself holds up fine

Interface Zero?

Add a couple of cybernetics, rain penalties, maybe include drones flying about as well (which I'd imagine the 3D would be useful for) and you could have a great way to explore a near-future city.

I want:

> Huge corporations that dominate the world but are not necessarily evil
> Tentacular megalopolises and mostly deserted countryside
> High-tech and clean corporate business, commercial and residential areas with intelligent buildings, efficient mass transit, clean parks, private security, etc.
> Gigantic and dangerous slums with huge housing projects, burnt down housing blocks, refugee camps, shops selling cheap stuff and streets choke full of trash
> Huge sewer system (access to corporate areas is heavily guarded)
> Cyclopean industrial sites and landfills
> Gigantic recycling plants were all the trash is sorted, treated and recycled
> Hot nightclubs and sleazy bars
> Redlight districts full of prostitutes, VR sex cabins, and STD's (both physical and digital)
> New exciting and dangerous synthetic/electronic drugs
> Bloodsports to keep people happy (gladiator fights, dangerous high-speed races...)
> New religious/philosophical paradigms
> Robot waifus
> Cloned waifus
> Genetically engineered waifus
> Cyborg waifus
> Virtual waifus
> Psycho killers (standard psychos, cyberpsychos, drug addicts, bugged A.I.'s, hacked cyberbrains...)
> Brutal vigilantes
> Ultra-violent gangs
> Corrupt cops
> Crazy cults
> Ruthless mercenaries
> Strong contrast between corporate world and slums (high-tech vs. low-tech, clean vs. dirty, elegant vs. vulgar)
> Escapism through virtual worlds, drugs, alcohol, party and sex

Some inspiration:
Enter the Void (visuals, escapism), Hardware (visuals), Strange Days (new drug), Elysium (contrast slums/corporate areas), Dredd (housing projects, gangs, drugs), Akira (sewer system), Automata (visuals), City of God (slums and gang violence), Tropa de Elite 2 (slums, corrupt cops), Total Recall (new technology), Ex Machina & Armitage III (robot waifu), Deus Ex: Human Revolution (corporations, visuals), Syndicate (2012) & Ghost in the Shell (cyberbrain hacking)

Putting all this together gives me a headache.

I'm not shitting on it - cyberpunk combines well with post-apoc, pic related (directed asteroid strikes/orbital bombardment), but do you mind if I ask why?

What does the apocalyptic scenario and trying to survive the world that followed add to the setting?

>> No.49128785

As one of the anons said above, cyberpunk is about building the new above the bones of the old. Post apoc helps in that it provides plausible reasoning why the world went to shit and corporations took over the role of nation states.

>> No.49128985
File: 1.91 MB, 1920x1080, 2dl88j7.jpg.png [View same] [iqdb] [saucenao] [google] [report]

My idea is to have a post-apocalyptic setting to explain major changes in the world's organization. It's difficult to explain why all of a sudden there should be a giant and especially overcrowded metroplex ranging from New York to Washington D.C. as the US population grows only slowly (possible explanation: European refugees fleeing from radioactive EU, or refugees from USA's central and north-western states due to eruption of the Yellowstone super-volcano...). There need to be also an explanation about why all of a sudden private companies become more powerful than nation-states (ex. what's left of the US government, the US military-industrial complex, and the US armed forces ban together and form a new entity to face an emergency, while abandoning some areas completely). Finally, I'm a sucker for post-apocalyptic settings.

Now that I wrote all that, I'm thinking that a pre-apocalyptic setting could be cool, too. The world is going to shit, and life is only possible in a few locations (ex. Automata).

I don't like cyberpunk, but I love post-cyberpunk, especially when the protagonists work for the government.

The chief dilemma of a world like this is the tension between the state and private sector, and in particular transnational, really, supernational entities like corporations.

No one is evil, but many, maybe even most people in these settings, as in our world today, are totally self-absorbed and materialistic, and that clashes with organizations that serve the public interest, chiefly the government.

And the financial elites will inevitably try to fully capture public institutions in such a world, and even privatize the essential features of government like the military and police. Cyberpunk typically just has this as a default assumption with the government either totally captured or completely ineffectual, but it isn't and shouldn't be that simple. States will fight back and nationalism won't ever fully disintegrate into captialist globalism.

No one cares about the world because everyone just tunes into a different part of cyberspace too chase a false dream. You don't have to make your setting in USA. You can use Japan or Germany instead.

Then again, give it five to ten years and we'll probably get a definite answer.

No aliens, but tons of uplifted animals, genetically modified transhumans, and androids. Post scarcity society with uber powerful AIs running everything behind the scenes. Ordinary humanity struggling to find a sense of purpose in a civilization which seems to have moved beyond them. Ordinary humanity finding that purpose as maintaining their humanity as an embodiment of the heritage of all thinking beings.

>Asking why the AIs haven't wiped us out is like asking why children don't kill their parents. If it doesn't make sense to you, then all I can say is thank God the AIs are more human than you are.

Normal people often find themselves pulled into the machinations of the AIs. They are tapped to perform (or investigate) espionage, inspired to start social movements, or even drafted for dangerous adventures aimed at neutralizing "threats to world peace". The idealistic claim the AIs really need us because of some ill defined quality we possess. The cynical believe these shenanigans are the equivalent of laser pointers for cats, but this usually just means they can relax and enjoy the process.

A few decades into the future, the world spirals into nuclear war. Much of Europe, America, China and Russia is destroyed. Indian hackers disable Pakistan's nuclear program before it can launch and Pakistan is nuked into oblivion while India makes a deal with China to accept Chinese refugees if China doesn't nuke it.

India's cities grow ever larger as refugees from around the world pour in, creating a society where foreigners live apart from the rest of India in their own communities, ruled by foreign megacorps (like a corporate Chinatown, basically) and the conservative Hindu government uses the growing nationalist fear to pass traditionalist laws that, among other things, undo the progress towards equal treatment for untouchables and low-caste Hindus. While the working class are little more than brainwashed flesh-robots, the middle class becomes a decadent society where cyberspace, designer drugs and even rewired neural pathways are used for pleasure. The upper class grow steadily more inhuman as they seek to transcend their natural boundaries with genetically modified, almost superhuman designer babies, cybernetic modifications and digital immortality A growing criminal element threatens this stability, but the real threat comes from counterculture movements ranging from hyper-conservatives who want to outlaw new and dangerous technologies, to misfit teens who adopt the trappings of '80s sci-fi cyberpunks in an attempt to be 'nonconformist', to drug-addled terrorists who just want to see the world burn.

Basically, it's 5 minutes before society collapses, and no-one knows whether we'll build a better one on it's ruins (although some fight society in the hope that this will happen) or we'll collapse into savagery.

Also, many foreigners deliberately act and dress like stereotypes to maintain individuality in their new home, so Japanese gangers would be some sort of Samurai-Ninja-Yakuza.

Now, but with more crime, more instability, and maybe a slight increase in technology. Climate change is out of control, ad the gap between rich and poor is massive. The streets are filthy and full of new homeless people, and gasmasks are sold in vending machines for a cool 20 bucks a pop (non reusable after a few hours). Environmentalists are radicalized and fighting a hopeless battle against the government, and terrorist attacks like bombings and airplane hijacking are so common that they're routine and are used to curb the freedoms and restrict the freedoms of the people. Computer technology is both a great liberator and a tool for a more efficient tyranny than humans have ever witnessed. The entire point is that buffy is irrelevant in a conversation about cyberpunk, whether you add magic or not. If you had some example of a magic-cyberpunk universe where the magic came primarily in the forms of a physically amped up human who needs to fight tons of vampires, then I'd give you that it's relevant to that particular universe. But not anything more than that. It certainly has nothing to do with shadowrun, for example.

I just don't think fantasy tropes mix well with sf/cyberpunk. Even when I played the recent SR games (Dragonfall > Hong Kong > Returns) I could only partially stomach the magic part; most of the time I would just subconsciously ignore it. It has some awesome stuff in it, but in the end, when you go down the line the fluff just doesn't work stylistically (for me).

I much more prefer to go quasi-science or hard science fiction way, exchanging "magic" for ESP abilities, orcs/dwarves/elves for genetically engineered/augmented post-humans, dragons and other menagerie for mutant beasts and lab experiments...I just think weird sciency sf stuff works better for atmosphere than magic in high tech settings.

>There need to be also an explanation about why all of a sudden private companies become more powerful than nation-states

The line between private companies and the government is probably more of a polite fiction at this point. Not just in regards to the military-industrial complex, but also in terms of big pharma - there's a reason Mylan's the only game in town for epinephrine, and it's not because of free market forces.

Some of the big themes of Cyberpunk (at least when I'm running it) are:
>The new always replaces the old.
>However, the new always comes in struggle and sin, and the old puts up one hell of a fight.
>The people who don't except the new ways end up being dragged, kicking and screaming, into the future, as the world changes around them.

The setting doesn't necessarily NEED to be a complete dystopia. In fact I sort of like it better when it isn't. I prefer:
>Technology has lead to a lot of fucked up shit. Pollution, corruption, you know the drill.
>On the other hand, because of that same technology, it's also a great time to be alive; on average, people are living longer, eating better, communicating faster, there are less diseases, and things are getting done that three or four decades ago would have been deemed impossible.

>> No.49172082

That depends on your definition of "intellectual". Some people have been lead to believe that it means someone who has higher education, namely college. But education =/= intellect. Let's look at Webster's definition.

>the faculty of reasoning and understanding objectively, especially with regard to abstract or academic matters

The main word there being "objectively". The majority of left ideologies are based upon emotion and lack objectivity. i.e. "We should all give our tax dollars to the jobless NEETs whether you as an individual want to or not becasue I feel bad for them and a person shouldn't have to work if they don't want to."

People see these decisions based upon bias and personal feelings and disagree that the people making these decisions are "intellectual" becasue they do not fit the critera objectively.

The problem with magic in cyberpunk is't the magic. Drugs that give you psionic powers, AI voodoo gods, Techno shamanism, ancient Ninja clans, All that stuff kicks ass. The problem is that shadowrun just Ctrl-C Ctrl-Vs tolkenesque DND troupes onto cyberpunk and then uses urban fantasy to fill in the gaps.

To be fair though, I also have a problem with those things in fantasy. Fantasy needs to get over Tolkien. Imagine if every sci-fi story had to include Klingons. Not just generic warrior race aliens, but actual fucking Klingons. Some of them would go on about how they had a unique take on it, but they would still call them Klingons, and they would still have bumpy foreheads.

And fantasy just sort of accepts this.

Sci-fi and fantasy evolved differently, though. Before Tolkien, most of what you really had were stories with mostly humans and monsters, without many other races, if any. Tolkien was the one to reimagine things like dwarves and elves as fantasy races that were distinct from but could be interacted with like humans. And aside from a few new races, no one really challenged the mold. Anything that did just fell by the wayside or was too niche to really garner popularity.

Sci-fi, in contrast, became popular in a ton of different ways - not just books like fantasy, but tv shows. Star Trek and Star Wars and Stargate and Farscape and all that jazz. Nothing really came first, as much as it was all jumbled together at roughly the same time.

I may have shit opinions on the topic, but I like my cyberpunk to be like the street level of things you'd find in a wider scifi setting. When the PCs aren't aboard their ship in space and off on adventures or interacting with a panoply of alien races and they take the time to actually get into the grit of what goes on, particularly with human worlds or human colonies. Mega corporations funding colonization efforts and turning people into wage slaves until they rival and even eclipse governments, the streets are run by gangs pumping neo-drugs and cybercrime onto the streets, those same gangs and corporations experimenting with barely-understood alien technology along with cutting edge military hardware, aliens shaking their heads at how shit humans have allowed themselves to become, new religions and cults springing up around cybernetic immortality and transhumanism with a dash of new age psychic interdimensional 'ascension' philosophies, and fuckloads of neon.

Adding images because I have little to contribute.

Reminds me of a modular armor concept I had for CP2020 based on ideas from the Deep Space sourcebook. You have an skinsuit-type baselayer that is fragment proof (protects also from very small caliber projectiles), fire retardant, acid resistant. With gloves, boots and an integral helmet with gas mask/respiratory system this armor becomes also NBC proof. The baselayer can then be reinforced by the addition of different armor segments or of a fully enclosed armor (Metal Gear, Pit Viper, Hooded Viper, ACPA). High-tech base-layers also contain health sensors, GPS tracking devices and environmental survival systems (basically an A/C unit for extreme heat and cold). Slightly reinforced suits exist for pilots who do not wear additional armor. Infiltration units have special suits that combine armor and thermo-optical camouflage systems.

Yeah, I know what he meant - still, the physical half of Neuromancer's heist was in space.

Now that I think about it, Case's case - where he's an expert with exploits but got caught and chopped - would be a pretty fair reason for a PC to have skills and a backstory laden with cool things they've done but still be starting low and weak.

Armitige is either a DMPC or the guy that didn't prepare any background for his character and borrowed someone else's backstory.
