True enough, anon. The army must become more than the mere sum of its parts, using proper support.

Perturabo deepstriking with his Tyrants could destroy two vehicle units: He uses his Cognis to give the whole unit +1BS, the Tyrants shoot at the lighter vehicles (Vindicators) while Perty uses the Tyrant's sgt's Omniscope to shoot his orbital bombardment onto another unit, at TL BS7 S9 Ordnance

Thoughts about my 2000pts Iron Wing?

- Cover the center board with the Heavy Squad from a ruin and harden them against enemy fire and templates (armour+Apothecary). Use Stasis shells to fuck up enemy WS. Pew pew the enemy with the free Rhino and give him another target.
- Support the Heavy Squad with crossfire from the Medusas and deal with stuff hiding beyond line of sight
- Let the Tactical Squads hold some points/protect my stuff and destroy other Marines in close combat (additional blades)
- Send the Terminators against bigger targets in close combat, let the LR take the first hits to protect my Heavy/Artillery units
- Let the HQ + Apothecary + Support Squad wait in reserve, then come in to deal with stuff that survived the templates with WS5 + Twin Linked Plasma + FNP and have some extra crunchy Orbital Bombardment.

Master of Signal
Tactical Support Squad (8 dudes, Plasma Repeaters, Rhino)
Legion Apothecary [Artificer Armour]

Looks like a Typhon that gives up Chem bombardment, rad grenades and Telepathy for Sweep advance (at -1 because DG rules) and +1A.

Regardless, I have talken him out of Riptides for the moment. He's loading up on Railsides

>Charge a unit (lets say str 4 vs str 4)
>Rad grenades lower opponent to 3, wound them on a 3+
>LA rules let you wound one roll better so wound on a 2+
The distinction actually is important when it comes to instant death thresholds. Granted the biggest advantage of the LA rule is that it makes their paragon blades pseduo strength 6 and their perdition blades pseudo strength 5.

Also BA can make the most unupgraded campaign character.
>BA character
>Give them +1 toughness
>Give them instant death for one fight subphase
>Give them a perdition blade and jetbike
>Throw them in a unit with a forge lord with rad grenades (ignore this if you choose strength instead of toughness)

After millenia of doing nothing, they decided ading a collar (or gorget, whatever) to protect the vulnerable neck.
Still, the greatest protection was indeed MkIII's, and only at the front, at the cost of being slowed down by the sheer mass of the extra plates.
The MkIV was a nice compromise between mobility, ease of repair and protection.
And MkV's forte was that it was like MkV and could be held together by chewed bubble gum.

So, a friend of mine and I are planning on trying out 30k after having just recently started 40k (because we hate ourselves I guess) and to that end I'd like input on the lists I'm building based off the fact that I'm gonna pick up betrayal at calth.

Both are at 2k points.

The first are traitor Word Bearers, as follows:

HQ (475)
>Legion Centurion (Chaplain): artificer armor, burning lore, plasma pistol, power weapon, refractor field
>Legion Centurion (Diabolist): artificer armor, melta bombs, pair of lightning claws
>Legion Praetor: tartaros termie armor, burning lore, digi lasers, iron halo, power fist, combi-weapon (undecided), MoTL Dark Bretheren

Troops (405)
>Legion Recon: 4xMarines with recon armor, sniper rifles; Sarge with recon armor, rifle
>Legion Tac: 19x marines, dark channeling, ledion vexilla; Tac Sarge, artificer armor, power weapon (probably a sword), bolt pistol

Elites (530)
>Contemptor Deadnought w/ multi-melta and autocannon
>Gal Vorbak: 9x Dank Bretheren; Dark Martyr

Fast Attack (320)
>Ashen Circle: 9x Incendiary; Iconoclast w/ artificer armor, inferno pistol, 2x phosphex bombs, power axe

Heavy Support (270)
>Deredeo-pattern Dreadnought: Aiolos Missile launcher, Arachnus pattern heavy lascannon battery

>> No.48805545

The second legion is traitor blackshield Ultramarines, the idea being that they decided to piss off and try to carve off their own little mini empire/

HQ (495)
>Blackshield Reaver Lord: artificer armor, cyber-familiar, digital lasers, halo blade (master-crafted), iron halo, Legion Scimitar Jetbike w/heavy bolter, melta bombs, rad grenades, lightning claw
>Legion Centurion (Champion): Cataphractii Armor, combi-bolter, chainfist
>Navigator: Digital lasers

Elites (685)
>Legion Destroyer Squad: 9xDestroyers, jump packs, missile launcher w/ suspensor web and rad missiles, volkite serpenta; Sarge w/ phosphex bomb, funder hammer
>Legion Terminators w/ Anvillus drop pod: Cataphractii armor, 4x termies, heavy flamer; Sargeant

Troops (240)
>Marauder Squad: 9x Marauders w/ 5 bolters, 2 heavy chainswords, heavy bolter, sniper rifle; Chief w/ lightning claw

Fast Attack Squad (580)
>Legion Jetbikes: 5x skyhunters, 2 multi meltas; Sergeant w/ hand flamer, power sword
>Legion Storm Eagle Assault Gunship: armored ceramite, extra armor, twin-linked multi-melta, two twin-linked lascannons

I'm super new to building horus heresy lists, so please tell me if I've done something impossible in the above lists. I'm using battlescribe and suspect that it might not handle horus heresy as well as it does normal 40k.

>> No.48805640

Terminator armor on praetors is meh, in my opinion.

Can't use recon marines as compulsory troops, you'll need another tac squad, assualt marines, or breachers.

Why multi-melta and autocannon on the dread? Curious is all.

Why the lascannons on the deredeo? Expecting heavy armor?

Blackshields are cool, but I'm wondering why not just regular Ultramarines, if this is your army/your friend's? That way you could forge the narrative as your chapter of Ultras hunting down/being hunted down by his/your chapter of Word Bearers. No offence, of course!

Also, isn't the Navigator an Agent of the Emperor, and therefore Loyalists only, or am I misremembering this?

Destroyers are bad. Really overcosted for what they do.

Also why does everyone use Battlescribe?

Anyways anon, I'd sugesst downloading the books from the OP and checking all the options available to you. Also I'm tired so my advice might be wrong on some points.

>> No.48805716

Multi melta and autocannon just to cover close and mid range and so he can do a little anti-tank and a little crowd control. And yeah, lascannon on the deredeo just in case of heavy armor. I'm not sure what exactly my friend might be bringing, so just trying to anticipate options. I know he's indicated raven guard though.

I chose blackshields because I like the idea of marines going their own way in the chaos of the heresy. In this case, to go become horrible pirates out around the edges of the imperium. ultramarines because the idea of Ultramarines going "fuck guilliman, I want my own empire, too" makes me very happy.

Is there a good alternative to destroyers? Just someone who's flavorful as assholes using asshole weapons like rad grenades? I also had destroyers in there because originally the champ was a moritat with a jump pack and destroyers are the only group they can join from what I understand.

I'll look up navigators and see if they're only loyalist.

(also I use battlescribe because I'm incredibly lazy and don't want to add up my army points because I'm awful)

Thanks for the response!

>> No.48805865

>Raven Guard
If he's smart, he'll likely be infiltrating all over you.

You're better off dedicating a unit to something, rather than making it an all-rounder unless it's quite cheap. In this case, it'd be better off for the Dread to focus on thing. Multi-meltas aren't bad anti-tank, just have a short range. And Autocannons don't have enough shots nor AP3 or 2 to really bring the pain unless there's more than one since the primary enemy in 30k is MEQ and TEQ.

I'd say stick with the autocannons on the Deredeo, cheaper and it's not overkill either, unless you're really expecting your friend to bring the big guns.

A good alternative to destroyers? Anything that isn't them, to be honest. Dual bolt pistols and having to pay for the rad-missile launcher doesn't do them any favors. Moritats are meh consuls in my opinion. Plus Blackshields can only ever have one consul so choose wisely.

Also this doesn't specify what blackshield option you're taking. Chymeriae? Outlanders? Orphans of War? Death Seekers?

>> No.48805886

Oh whoops, the blackshields are Outlanders. Pirates, etc.

Also looks like navs are agents of the emperor/agents of the warmaster, so I think I'm good there, but he's also only there to fill a points hole, really.

Nicely done, whats the recipe?

>> No.48806224

All right, in the word bearers, the deredeo is now just assault cannons and aiolos missile launcher, the contemptor is chainfist w/twin-linked bolter and multi melta for fisting armored targets, and the recon are now a support squad of five men with flamers and a rhino transport for running around and burning birds.

As for the Ultrapirates, I dropped the destroyers and navigator, changed the marauders to a fifteen-strong band of guys with three heavy chainswords and a melta gun (the rest are just swinging chainaxes and bolt pistols), and their sarge now has a plasma pistol and lightning claw. In place of the destroyers, I have a ten-strong band of veteran tac marines toting two heavy bolters and three combi-weapons (two flamers, one melta) and a sarge with combi-weapon(plasma) and thunder hammer and artificer armor, and they all hang out in a rhino partybus with aux drive, dozer blade, heavy bolter, and hunter-killer missile. Oh, and I handed the reaver lord a xeno deathlock.

>Can't use recon marines as compulsory troops, you'll need another tac squad, assualt marines, or breachers.
The Dark Brethren rite requires an additional compulsory Troop, so you need a mix of at least three units of either Tactical, Assault or Breacher Squad.

>Elites (530)
>>Contemptor Deadnought w/ multi-melta and autocannon
>>Gal Vorbak: 9x Dank Bretheren; Dark Martyr
M-Melta and Autocannon may seem to overlap, but the range and strength/armour penetration make them fill somewhat different roles, I'd use one or the other with power/chainfist.
At 2k points level, I'd separate Gal Vorbak in two squads, unless deploying them in a transport. Also the Dark Martyr is too good a unit not to spent some points on Artificer Armour and a melee weapon.

>Fast Attack (320)
>>Ashen Circle: 9x Incendiary; Iconoclast w/ artificer armor, inferno pistol, 2x phosphex bombs, power axe
In a unit of ten, 4/6 ration in favour of power axes is preferred, you need only one Axe Rake to impose a Fall Back penalty to enemy.
Regarding Phosphex bombs, you'll rarely, if ever, get the chance to use them both, one is more than enough. If you take Inferno pistol on the Iconoclast, drop the bombs altogether.

The armour development up to mk.5(later to be designated as 6) was probably more organic due to the nature of the galaxy-wide deployment and Maximus was quite a step from the earlier marks so it's likely they were testing the waters by issuing it here and there.

We already knew he's a psyker, and marines assigned to the Destroyer corps often need prosthetics.
But a zombie? What the hell did Decima do to him? What is Caleb up to?
>Oh and one of the death shroud went rogue
Only one?

>> No.48808962

He died at istvaan but kept himself alive via psyker craft
Then decima helped him by giving a cyborg body to hold the flesh together so they could attack the traitors - I think decima is using their status of outside the main war to do tech heresy which if it works he can then present as acceptable
And the shroud Bloke went a bit nuts after seeing morty use the same thing he had banned plus use it to sacrifice his fellow shroud

“I had expected to find you in better spirits,’ came the corpse-thin voice of Calleb Decima, the one who had taken the psychically-sustained Morturg from the site of his bodily death and given him the shell of iron he now wore. What existed now was a fused entity, a melded amalgam of unholy tech and biomancy, anathema both to their former masters of Barbarus and Mars. In the years since, Morturg and Decima had worked together in the void, hunting down isolated elements of the XIV Legion wherever they could be found.”

What were you planning for your mutable tactics choice?

Why take a power dagger without taking any other specialist weapon on the saboteur?

Power dagger's shit on its own

Oh yeah, the saboteurs are kinda shit, viglators are quite nice

So if I take an imperial fist praetor, and give him cataphractii armor, and an iron halo, he can reroll failed invulnerable save throws of a one. If I then give him a storm shield, he he then has a 3++ that rerolls ones. Am I missing anything here?

>> No.48809353

Lightning claws are shit. Seekers are better than headhunters. Your one close combat squad doesn't have an assault transport. 30k isn't too popular under 2000 points, if you want a small starting force maybe go with a 1500 zone mortalis force.

It happens in 40k, with a Terminator Captain in Cataphractii, I don't think HH adopted that I mean 40k Cataphractii has SaP

I think the re-rolling invulns is only for 40k cataphractii isn't it? I didn't think it worked like that in 30k

appreciate the feedback, I would probably be taking Scout as my mutable tactic. I kind of knew the saboteur is a trashcan but I felt like it might be funny if it ever works out, didn't give him another weapon because I'm always wary of putting a ton of points into a character in the 40k ruleset. Is there any loadout that makes the Vigilator really stand out, or is he good off the shelf?

I'm gonna do a total re-work of the list today with this stuff in mind, thanks

Ignore that bit, I always mix calivers with chargers.
I don't understand why Saboteurs can't join Scouts (or Headhunters or Seekers). There's nothing more commando than blowing up stuff prior to attacking.

Alacrán comes from Arabaic al‘aqrab, also the name of one of a particularly nasty prison in Egypt. I don't think it's any less correct in Spanish, it just never completely overtook the Greek-derived word (skorpios).

The wording says that if a unit has access to take chainswords (normally +2 points), it can take chainaxes for free. The debate is whether "has access to" means you actually have to pay for the chainswords or if they just have to be an option.

Blood Angels have a similar rule that if they have access to a volkite serpenta they can take a hand flamer for +15 points. The cost of that hand flamer makes it unlikely that you'd first have to pay for the volkite serpenta - slight evidence that "has access to" does not mean you have to buy it, just be able to buy it. No one used to care because World Eaters were considered underpowered until the recent Age of Darkness red book. They're better now that chainaxes are +1 strength. But most people seem to agree that they're free. You still have to buy and model them - the rule does say they have to be shown on the model.

>Their chest and helmet are unique, but the rest of the battle plate is extra armoured MkII, which could count as one of the first iterations of MkIII. Those MkIV legs are actually different MkIII shinguards.
Yeah, I see it now. Maybe it was just the Maximus design then, mk4 Destroyers have similar plates on the legs.

Pretty much any word that starts with "al" is arabic, right?
I say "colloquial" in the way that people here generally call the poisonous ones with thin pincers "alacrán", while the big ones they call "escorpión", even though the words themselves are synonimous and referr to the same order

No one plays 1850. It's either 1500 Zone Mortalis (or beginner games), sometimes 2000, but more commonly 2500 or 3000.

Power daggers are often used in conjunction with another specialist weapon in order to get the extra attack.

You need some ability to shoot at heavily armored vehicles. Consider laser destroyer vindicators.

Command squads aren't bad anymore, but I feel like you have more than enough infantry and not enough fancy toys. Normally it's good to have them in Rhinos, but it might be less important if you take Infiltrate or Outflank as your mutable tactics. Up to you - there's certainly nothing wrong with Rhinos.

And no dreads! The Alpha Legion-specific Contemptor model is too sweet to pass up.
