Legion Chapters Edition
Does your Primarch love you? Sub-Edition
So we finished something from the thread before last. In the last thread Anons talked about IW/AL problems, we talked about chapters within the legions and their sizes, Anons still talked about Space Marine and game mechanics, one Anon wanted to know about which legions loved wearing gold, and much more in the last thread >>48547082

What do you think the ratio of MKIV distribution was within each legion by the outbreak of the Heresy?

Those numbers seem a little high, though I agree that the SoH and EC would have the highest proportions. Never mind that the Book 1 color plates show a lot of SoH non-Mk IV armor, even among the traitors. Ultramarines would have the most among the loyalists because they had their own manufacturing capabilities.

But who actually builds armies representing the start of the Heresy? Hmm, that brings up a good question - when are all your armies set?

Ironically, a pre-Terra White Scars army should have very little Mk IV. Lots of Mk II, but also Mk III despite it not being fast. They spent four years trying to find a way to break through the warp storms keeping them from Terra, during which it sounds like a lot of their combat was ship-based. So lots of breacher squads. Not what you'd expect, but it's what they did.

Probably. I don't remember any actual use of those runes, but Lorgar tries to force Khorne onto Angron during that campaign. (Hopefully that's not too direct a spoiler for the novel Betrayer). The Word Bearers were clearly knowledgeable about the individual gods before Calth.

I imagine that most of the "fingers" in the various sinister soups are human infiltration agents recruited at various points of campaigns.
In theory they wouldn't need to have their marines spread out that much, but I'll admit that it is likely that they had small cells of them everywhere.

However that doesn't solve the mystery of the ALs manufacturing and recruiting base, which was and as far as we're aware still is an unknown factor.
They may have had far more marines than anyone ever expected, especially once they steal the perfect rapid manufacturing technology for them in Deliverance Lost.

The AL fleet was certainly much bigger than anyone expected them to have.

Curze saw the worst possible future for each event that he saw. He had no context of when or why this happened, just the continuous worst possible outcome.

Personally I think he witnessed so much and so many conflicting things that could happen. His brothers murdering each other when the lived. Primarchs possessed by daemons. He probably saw Sanguinius if he had sacced him self at Signus. He probably saw Magnus if the chaos gods choose him instead of Horus. Dorn opening the webway and letting the warp pour forth into reality with the Emp's head in his hand. Just every single worst case scenario with no context on what led to it or how to avoid it or what could be done to prevent it.

Eventually I think he just decided that if he could just avoid the stuff he saw from happening it didn't matter what took place.

Half his brothers are daemon princes? Atleast they still have control.

10k years of war? Atleast the souls of everything aren't immediatly forfiet.

Nostromo a daemon would and being purged by his brothers? Better smash it now and let them have this mercy.

Quad mortars are just plain good. All 3 firing drops 12 3" blasts up to 60" away and don't need line of sight since they are barrage. One squad should be fine but if you are doing regular mortars.

Achilles should help alot. It's a regular tank with a quad motar, so it's dropping templates but nothing too excessive.

Typhon main gun is a 7" S10 AP1 Ignores cover pie plate of fuck you. Basically, you roll the dice and everything that isn't a 1 is a model to pick up. The only reason I like the Typhon is it's good at running over shit and if they had another tank with +1 to thunderblitz, I would probably use that.

This anon >>48572323 has the most important bits of advice down. Take your time, thin your paints, and work up layers rather than slobbering on a gallon of chunky paint.

Even a flat basecoat that's competently applied will look better than a rushjob mini with patchy coverage, wash stains, chalk-thick white, or extreme highlights that are half the width of the figure's arm.

From there on, it's just a matter of applying that same patience and moderation on the basecoat to washes/shading and highlighting.

Don't be afraid to try out new techniques or colour schemes on test pieces. These could be anything from a cheap pack of miniatures that can easily be stripped in Simple Green, to even random leftover components or pieces of sprue.

Pick your primer color carefully (i.e. don't paint light colors over black without expecting to build up several increasingly light-hued layers). On the other hand, n00bs using white undercoat sometimes fail to go over the white in crevasses and that looks bad too. It's not easy. Colored primers are good, imo.

Never glop on paint thicker than the consistency of milk (i.e. thin your paints). If it doesn't cover very well, LET IT DRY before you touch it again.

Drybrushing is good if you're a beginner, but it'll kill the brush you use. Use a different brush, and do try edge highlighting without drybrushing.

imo, it's never too early for the following as a minimum:
Prime
Solid basecoat - more than 1 layer if it's a light color
Secondary colors (larger areas) - black parts, bolter, trim
Wash/oil (if in doubt - nuln oil everywhere)
Secondary colors (small areas) - eye lenses, little details
Single pass of edge highlighting on each major section
Dullcoat for protection

That'll give you a clean look.

Oils/washes work better over a glosscoat, as do decals. Before long, I think you'll do the following after the first Secondary Color stage: glosscoat, apply decals, wash/oil, then do the rest. And that single pass of edge highlight will turn into multiple passes.

Many primarchs were good and many were bad. Had erebus and kor phearon not been chaos priests and converted Horus then it's likely most would have been fine. Angron would have eventually died or been put down, Curze would have needed a stern talking to about appropriate actions but would have likely needed to be killed too. Their legions would have been scaled back and used as shock assault forces/last resorts, galactic bogey men. Mortarion, Perturabo, Lorgar and Magnus would probably need a good talking to as well but would ultimately be fine. I'may unsure what would happen to Fulgrim and the Emperors Children, it isn't clear how much influence the Laer Sword would have been able to exert without all the other chaos stuff going on. That being said his Legion were pushing many boundaries so who knows. Khan and the Lion may have been troublesome on the traditionally loyalist side with Khan not giving enough of a shit about anything and the Lion being so secretive it would probably land him in shit later on. Maybe if he had been patient and waited to develop the technology without turning to Chaos, the primarchs wouldn't have been whisked away and he could have raised them right.

>>48575757
Agreed. But before Davin, Horus was able to guess that the Emperor's solo project was Warp-related. The Khan suspected it too (he probably had the healthiest attitude regarding the Warp, realizing it was useful and real, but dangerous). So it might be an exaggeration to say that they needed to be told what was going on. And the Emperor apparently had a Golden Throne 2 built for Magnus to sit in, in order to manage a second webway node (citation needed? - see Path of Heaven). Probably best not to tell him that he was born to be jailed in that way.

He just needed to stay in touch with them after going back to Terra.

There's more going on, too. The Cabal convinced the Alpha Legion to join the Traitors decades before Horus even turned. Eldrad Ulthran was on the opposite side, trying to tell Fulgrim to turn against the Traitors before Isstvan III was planned (but after he had picked up the Laer blade). So this proxy war between xenos groups helped make the Heresy worse.

I meant more in comparison to the original image. You can clearly see the gorget only protects the front of the neck and then cuts off, and that the area behind his neck is a separate section of armor or his backpack.

Granted, that's actually not an ideal design for a gorget - usually they do actually go all the way around. This leave more room for him to move around around and see, but it doesn't protect as well... except maybe from gunshots from the front. He is technically immune to bolter fire after all...

Wouldn't they just be mixed in with all the other marines? Kharn and Ahriman were both Terran born and neither led Terran companies.

I was thinking the praetor was a former legion commander from before the Khan showed up and decided to fuck off scout style with some ships and battalions loyal to him rather than giving up his independence. Kind of counting on the Khan being a chill morher fucker who lets his peeps do their own thing like he does to the rest of the Imperium. That's the impression I got off him from Scars and how there is such a Terran/Chogoris divide.

Would terran marines be better or worse supplied than other battalions in legions due to their connections to earth/mars? Would they look any different?

I like they mostly plate steel look of the IF linked earlier in the thread and I want to do my Terran White Scars up like it. Would they have more mars pattern stuff and newer marks of armor such as IV and VI due to their connections, or being so old from terra that they'd have only IIs and IIIs? Are mars pattern stuff newer?

Just because they’re from Terra doesn’t mean they maintain any connections to it; marines belong to the legion once they’re initiated. So no, they wouldn’t be any different and they wouldn’t be supplied better or worse.

The plate steel look is simply from the earliest days of the Great Crusade, before a lot of legions developed their own color schemes. That was long before Mk IV armor existed, let alone Mk VI. But they’d be physically closer to Terra, which might be good for their supply situation.

Weapons and vehicles. I don't want to buy Mars pattern 40k shit unless it makes sense like they came by to pick up recruits or resupply. I figure as scouts they'd be a ways out there and couldnt count on getting good shit. Still I need to know what the bad shit is, unless they can count on ancient oaths of fealty to and from Mars.

I know its not 30k but has anyone else been reading this series?

I'm glad they brought up the fact that the IF had more than 3 successor chapters and Vulkan is still niggering the Imperium out of a primarch. He even alluded to Dorn still being alive.

Also happy to see that the Fist Exemplars aren't going to just take the IF mantel for themselves.

The Khan was pretty chill about things, so the Terran guys would likely have access to all the newer gear. Scars shows that Terrans were still being recruited after the discovery of Chogoris, so while the old guard might keep their old armor, the new guys might be issued newer sets.

In some other Legions, though, yeah, Terrans would get the shaft. Tempest shows that Corax of all people disliked the Terran Raven Guard.

There are Mars-pattern heavy weapons that are 30k-specific. It sounds like you're talking about Mars-pattern Rhinos (the 40k ones). The 30k-style Rhinos are Deimos-pattern, so they're made on Mars's moon. Not very different in terms of supply line.

Quick question about the Armoured Breakthrough Rite of War. It says "All Infantry units that can do so must purchase a Dedicated Transport, and those without the option must be deployed mounted in another vehicle which itself has a Transport capacity. All such vehicles must have the Tank or Super-heavy Tank type." Does this mean I have to take a 10-man Tactical Squad, since the squad has the option to take a Rhino as a Dedicated transport, so long as I do not take 10 additional Marines? Or, can I bump the squad up to 20 bodies, and stuff them in a Spartan?

Sure, there's plenty of variety shown for various reasons.
If you keep your legion recognisable you can switch it up quite a bit I imagine.
And that could even just be the iconography, as long as people can tell who you're supposed to be.

Though I imagine that the AL might have a bit more variety than what has been shown, if their various names are any indication.
FWs default blue/green metallic colour scheme is one, but all the references to the Amaranth colour in their naming probably means you can paint your army or parts of it in Amaranth (which is a redish Magenta colour, quite nice actually).
I certainly intend to get 1 or 2 squads in Amaranth.

It's not as big as a Hab block, but it is damn bigger than Vulkan.

Litterally OS the Ultramarines Chapter Master, turning him into red mist with a punch.

Vulkan "defeats" him by channeling the power of the WAAAGH, to become as bug as the Beast, and we see them last in a deadly embrace when the other marines are running from Ullannor because it's being bombed to smithereens.
