You are the former United States Navy warship USS HOEL, now returned as a shipgirl and ready to kick Abyssal ass!

You sigh as you lean back, letting the warm water of the repair dock flow over your body and up to your chin. Funnily enough, it seemed that the repair dock for shipgirls was basically just a really big hot tub. Apparently, there were "additives" in the water that helped accelerate healing and countered fatigue for shipgirls. At least, that was what you were told when you were whisked in here after your little "accident."

Shit, you were still angry and embarrassed about what happened. Having your boilers explode on you like that in front of all that brass? They'd think you were a fuck up like William D. Porter or something like that! You grumble silently to yourself as you look around to better gauge your surroundings, as you had a feeling this wouldn't be your last time here.

The repair bay was honestly a rather plan looking facility. There was a single large communal pool in the center of the room. On one side of the room were a line of smaller pools, more suited to small groups of may six or so people. On the other side, there were a couple rows of even smaller pools the size of bathtubs, no doubt for shipgirls who wanted to bathe alone. Then there was a door that led to the showers and dressing rooms. In between it all were floors and walls made of nothing but sterile white tile, and thick steam hung in the air, partially obscuring your vision and soaking restorative moisture into your parts not completely submerged.

Captain Takeuchi recommended that you stay in here for at least another 10 minutes to completely heal. You had half a mind to leave and retry the course, but then again, your rig was undergoing priority repair at Shen's workshop...

We need to talk to Dr. Shen to see what went wrong. I'm thinking that our Rig works better when we have our bat with us. Sorta like how armor sets provide bonuses ONLY when the entire set is used. The moment a piece of it is missing, you lose the bonuses. Hell, maybe we're like Tenryuu in that she primarily uses a sword rather than her guns.

Ah well, you might as well just take your time. No sense wandering about aimlessly. You dip your head lower, raising the water level up to the bridge of your nose as you glumly mull over what went wrong.

And that's when you hear an odd, upbeat humming.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Z1jnNRxZ7A

You turn your head to see a shipgirl gently stepping into the pool, her short red hair hemmed in by a large set of headphones as she happily hummed away a jaunty tune. You narrow your eyes, but don't really recognize her at all. Maybe a ship that was commissioned after your time?

That's when the girl finally turns your direction and notices her presence. Her green eyes widen a bit in surprise as she takes her headphones off, letting them hang around her neck before settling down and smiling.

"Oh! Hi there! I don't believe I've seen you around before! New arrival?" She says in a cheerful tone.

"Yeah." You nod. "Hoel. Just came back yesterday."

"Oooooh, now I remember hearing about that!" he other girl nods. "Well, I'm Annapolis, but you can just call me Anna!"

"Pleasure." You say simply.

"So, only back for one day and you're already in the repair bay? What happened?" Anna asks curiously before backing off a bit. "N-not that you have to tell me, or anything!"

"Oooooooh." Anna winces. "That's gotta hurt."

"Incredibly." You nod. "What are you in here for?"

"Oh... well..." Anna chuckles nervously as her fingers get all twitchy. "I wasn't paying attention during a patrol run and I may have accidentally rammed Enterprise..."

You nearly spit take.

"You rammed Big E?!" You cry.

"I-It was an accident!" Anna squeaks. "B-besides, she has way more more mass than me! She didn't even feel it! My rig had a few components knocked loose, so they s-sent me here as a precaution!"

"Oh, I see." You nod and narrow your eyes. "What exactly do you do, anyways?"

"Oh, I'm an Auxiliary General Major Relay Ship!" Anna says proudly, puffing up with pride.

"A...what?" You ask in confusion. Anna's pride deflates like a popped balloon.

"Ah, well, In short, I basically relay long range communications from the base to other ships int he field. I keep everybody up to date on changing objectives and mission conditions and make sure everybody is well informed and connected!"

"So.. .you never fired a shot in combat?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Nope!" Anna says happily.

"Hah, is that so?" You smile, trying not to blush or anything.

"Mhm!" Anna nods rapidly. "You're a big inspiration to us smaller ships!"

"Heh, I guess that's something." You grin and point to her headphones. "Those headphones part of your rig?"

"Oh, no, these are just a personal thing!" Anna holds the earphones in her hands and smiles warmly. "It might sound weird but... I like to hear things, you know? Music, speeches, people talking, even ambient noise. I just can't STAND things being quiet, you know?"

"Ah, well, I think it's time for me to get going." You say as you stand up and climb your way out of the pool "Gotta check on my rig. I'll be seeing you later, Anna."

"W-wait!" Anna stammers as she clambers out after you. "I-I need to check on my rig, too! How about we go together?"

"Sure thing." You nod.

The two of you quickly shower off the pool water, and you suddenly feel extremely energetic and refreshed. You're no sure what sort of magic those eggheads were working, but it was certainly effective! You walk into the dressing room as you dry off, and notice a fresh uniform neatly folded on the table, a slip of paper with your named clipped to it. You whistle as you unfold it. It was a perfect fit. Either they had done an exceptional repair job, or were really fast workers to make this all from scratch.

"Hey! Are you ready?" Anna asks as she steps out from her dressing room, fully clothed as she levels out her hat on her head.

"Yeah, let's go." You nod.

As the two of you head for Shen's workshop, you notice Anna skipping along, humming that tune of hers again. You wonder if you should ask her about anything else.

and the truly scary part? Aigaion in Ace Combat Infinity was shot down some time in August of 2019. The current year in Kantai Collection: Pacific Strike is 2024. Merc, had you actually decided to make the ACQ X KC:Pacific Strike crossover quest real...

>yfw Abyssal Aigaion can both fly at cruising altitudes and dive into the ocean as a submarine
>yfw Abyssal Aigaion can easily kill scores of shipgirls and fairies by swallowing them whole
>yfw Abyssal Aigaion's second form exposes her great pair of Nimbus missiles, but lets her use her TLS turrets and the dreaded Nimbus barrage.

"So, you know any other ships around here?" You ask your new little partner.

"Oh! W-well, there's Enterprise! She operates out of this base!" Anna says wistfully. "I mean she's just... she's just amazing in every way! Cool under fire, always knows what to do, gets along with just about everybody, and she has the highest number of confirmed Abyssal kills!"

"Really now?" You raise an eyebrow. "I know Enterprise was basically the ace of the fleet..."

"Well, she still is!" Anna says.

"And when you mean amazing in every way..." You start, your eyes lowering to her chest..

Anna nods.

"Of course." You sigh. "Anybody else?"

"And there's Iowa, too!" Anna adds. "She's, well, she's actually a lot like you! Always wanting to get into the action! There hasn't been a single Abyssal that's been able to match her one on one!"

"Sounds like I gotta meet her sometime." You grin.

"You should! Y-you two might make a good pair!" Anna says encouragingly.

At this point you've finally reached the workshop, where as before, you can see various rigs being worked on by maintenance and repair crews. You quickly pick out Shen, who is walking down a line of rigs doing routine checks.

"Hey! Dr. Shen!" You shout and wave. "Is my rig done yet?!"

Shen looks up to see you and Anna, and just silently shakes his head as he approaches.

"Second day on the job and you somehow manage to explode your boilers." Shen gives you a soft glare. "You of all people should now that rigs take time and resources to repair, and these are both things we are always short of! The Admiral ordered and instant repair on your rig, and we've had to use a lot of structural gel to meet deadlines!"

"Structural gel?" You blink in confusion.

"Normally, when we need parts, we fabricate them on site or order them from the mainland." Shen explains. "However, if time is critical, we can 3D print fresh parts, but this uses up valuable structural gel, which we use as the printing base."

"3D printing?" You ask in even more confusion.

"It's j-just a faster way of making parts!" Anna explains in a simpler fashion. "But expensive!"

"Ah." You nod.

"Either way, your rig has been repaired." Shen says. " Do take better care of it next time."

"H-how about mine?" Anna asks meekly.

"Repairs on your rig are about 90% complete." Shen says. "Though we're still doing fine tuning on your phased arrays and satellite uplinks that got knocked out of alignment."

"Wait a minute, that doesn't sound like period gear." You observe as Shen rolls both your and Anna's rigs out.

"Ah yes, we did make a few improvements to a number of rigs." Shen nods as he makes adjustments on Anna's right with a screwdriver. "Some of the shipgirls, especially the older ones, have more... 'contemporary' capabilities."

"Well, why can't you slap some of that 'contemporary' shit on my rig?" You ask a bit jealously.

"I wish it were that simple." Shen says somewhat sadly. "But there are many things we have yet to understand about rigs. We've tried it before, but the rigs... we've found that they're as much living organisms as they are machines. Any attempt to add 'foreign' equipment to them has failed, like a human body rejecting an incompatible organ."

"That doesn't explain how some shipgirl like Anna have upgraded rigs." You point out.

"Well, we've found that ships that go out into the field have a higher likelihood of 'accepting' new upgrades."

"Kinda like 'leveling up!'" Anna adds happily.

"Please, Anna, do not equate complicated scientific matters with your computer games." Shen says in exasperation.

"S-sorry. It looked like Hoel was zoning out there!" Anna replies.

Well, to be fair, she was right. You were on the verge of dozing off there.

"Anyways, you should get going." Shen looks at his watch. "The Admiral wanted a rush job so you could start again on the training course as soon as possible. Best not to keep him waiting."

Portland, of fucking course, is there was well, giving you a suspicious glare.

"Take it easy this time." She says with a grin.

You respond a single finger salute before walking up to Captain Takeuchi.

"Hoel reporting for training." You salute.

"I assume Shen has your rig repaired?" The Captain eyes you warily.

"That's what he said." You assure him.

"All right, then head to the starting area. I hope I don't need to repeat instructions."

"No sir." You shake you head as you summon your rig, your ship parts slowly materializing on your back.

"Give 'em hell, Hoel!" Sam grins as she gives you the thumbs up.

You nod wordlessly as you fire up your boilers. Slowly, this time. No sense getting yourself blown up again. You slowly build up momentum, as targets begin to pop up from floating buoys. Instinctively, your fire control radar cues you to fire and you start popping off shots, your training rounds knocking targets down left and right. You slowly begin to pick up speed, weaving through the twisting navigation buoys, keeping both your optics and radar on a close lookout for more targets. Things get a bit tougher as you pick up speed and start maneuvering more, reducing your response time and accuracy. The targets are popping up faster and faster now, and now it's starting to get a little challenging.

And to make things even MORE complicated, your search radar cues you to airborne contacts. You risk a split second to look up and see tiny little drones hovering lazily in the air. You task your rig mounted 5-inch cannon to engage them while you handle the surface targets with your hand mounted cannon.

You finally reach the last stage of the course, where you sail around in a large circle as targets start popping up in a full 360 degree zone. At this point, you're doing constant pivots and reversals to keep your guns in optimal firing angles as drones and targets begin swarming you. It's a slog, but eventually all of the targets go down, and it's just you on the water.

"Exercise complete." You hear the Captain's voice buzz through your radio. "Stand down, Hoel."

You turn to look back at the shore, where you see your sisters and Sam cheer and whooping loudly. The officers gathered on the bleachers begin hushed discussions among themselves again, and the Admiral gives you an encouraging nod. You felt your heart skip a bit. Somehow that small moment of recognition made it all worth it.

"Very good, Hoel." The Captain says coolly as you glide back to the starting area. "Not exactly the course record, but a solid score, nonetheless."

"Not bad for a second run." Portland says grudgingly.

"While you showed strong proficiency in all areas," the Captain continues, "I do have to commend you for your..."

Somehow it felt really good to hear him say that.

"Overall, your performance is more than enough to qualify you for combat operations." The Captain continues, flipping through some papers on his clipboard. "The Admiral is also eager to get you and your sisters into the action. Your first combat mission will be scheduled for tomorrow."

"These are the Admiral's orders, Portland." The Captain says calmly, eyeing the angry cruiser. "I have no authority to countermand them, and neither do you. We just have to assume that the Admiral knows what he's doing."

"How about I tag along with you?" You grin. It was nice seeing Portland out of her element for once. "After all, this does concern my future deployments."

Portland shoots you a poisonous look. She knows what your motivations are, but since you do have a legitimate reasoning, she can't do anything to stop you.

"Fine. Let's go." Portland huffs as she marches off.

"Johnston! Heer! Let's go!" You wave to your sisters. "We're paying the Admiral a visit!"

"Oh, sounds fun!" Johnston smiles. "I see they got your rig working good as new!"

"We were a bit worried." Heerman adds. "Never saw a boiler explosion like that."

"Ah, it was nothing." You try to reassure them.

"Well, at least you didn't let it keep ya down!" Sam laughs heartily as she slaps you on the back. "Though honestly, the repair really is a motherfucking marvel of engineering! Don't know how Shen and Vahlen managed to cook that up!"

Your little group heads over to the bleachers, where the Admiral is showing the last of the gathered officers out, shaking hands and smiling as they go. He turns to face your group and his smile goes from that forced, hollow one you put up at social events you don't like to a much warmer, natural one.

"Ah, girls!" The Admiral smiles and hugs each of you. Sam and Portland take it naturally, but you and your sisters instinctively tense up, never having had such intimate contact with a relative stranger, much less a superior officer, before.

"It's nice to see you good as new, Hoel." The Admiral continues, patting you on the shoulder. "I knew Shen would be able to pull through."

"He didn't seem very happy about it, though." You report.

"Ah, well, Shen has always been a bit of a penny pincher." The Admiral chuckles. "The more resources we use on repairs, the less he has to use on his little pet projects!"

"Sir." Portland finally speaks up. "I want to talk about their deployment orders."

"I see." The Admiral looks to Portland, his expression showing that he was expecting something like this. "And what are your concerns?"

"Speaking frankly, Admiral." Portland takes a breath. "I don't think they're ready. Our most recent patrols have been reporting that the Abyssals have been introducing stronger strains and are getting more organized, and we have enough shipgirls so we don't need to rush deployments. I know you must have your own reasons, but I don't want you to be unnecessarily risking the lives of other shipgirls."

"I see..." The Admiral nods.

You look at Portland, and then your sisters, who both silently look to you to take the lead.

The Admiral looks at you, and then Portland, and then to his secretary.

"Sam, your opinion?"

"It's gonna be a bit biased, sir, but I think they got what it takes." Sam says in support of you. "You saw what I was capable of day one, these gals here got the same stuff!"

"That's what we're all afraid of." You hear Portland mutter.

"You put up good points, but my decision is made." The Admiral concludes. "Taffy 3 will go on armed patrol tomorrow."

"Can you at least tell us why?" Portland asks. "I don't think me or any of the other ships will see this as anything other than preferential treatment."

The sighs and stares out at the blue ocean in front of him.

"I was hoping to keep this quiet for now, but I suppose there's no harm in telling you. The information will go public soon anyways." The Admiral sighs. "We just received confirmation that China has suspended aid shipments to Japan indefinitely."

"What? Why?" Portland blinks. "And don't we still have the Tokyo Air Bridge?"

"We're uh, actually allies now. It's a long story." Sam says.

"Analysts estimate that Japan has only six months left before total collapse. The President has decided to accelerate Operation Blue Dragon."

You actually see Portland go pale at those words.

"Hold up, what the hell is this Blue Dragon thing?" You ask in confusion. "Great Seawall? Tokyo Air Bridge? I NEED EXPLANATION."

Portland gives you a disapproving look while the Admiral just chuckles.

"Well, you really sould be reading the educational materials Captain Takeuchi has been providing you, but in short, the Great Seawall is essentially China's 'Plan B'. With their navy decimated, the Chinese concluded the best way for them to defend their coasts from the Abyssal threat was to completely wall them off."

"Typical Chinese isolationism." Portland says disdainfully.

"Big waste of resources if you ask me." Sam says in agreement.

"The Tokyo Air Bridge is something the Air Force is running. Since the Abyssals effectively control the Pacific Ocean, all commercial shipping has ground to a halt. Japan, which requires food imports and seafood to feed itself, was adversely affected. As a military ally, we've been airlifting supplies to them to keep them going, but it's just not enough. Our cargo planes can only carry so much and its a long and dangerous trip."

"So you want to open a sea corridor them." You finish, connecting the dots.

"Correct." The Admiral nods. "This will be our first offensive operation against the Abyssals. We were originally planning to start next year, but the current situation has forced us to accelerate the time table. If all goes according to plan, we will link up with the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force at Midway."

"Hey, as long as I can blow shit up for the good old US of A, I'm not complaining." You shrug. "Just point me where to hit and I'll hit it."

"As expected of a destroyer like you." The Admiral chuckles. "Anyways, we have much to prepare for. Sam, if you would accompany me."

"Sure thing." Sam nods. "See ya later, guys!"

The Admiral then walks off with Sam, leaving you with your sisters and Portland.
