Is this guy Khorne, or did Khorne rip off D&D's Orcus?

The resemblance is too fucking striking to not be linked, even overlooking the "satan" theme and iconography

Yes, they take it from the greek god Pan, demonized by latter christianity. But what about demons on thrones of skulls, wearing brass and copper armor?

Throne of skulls, brass, etc are not new to 40k nor D&D
I mean, what's a better way to say "this guy is as evil as evil gets" than "literally sits on skulls"

47. B-G-G.: I now demand a thousand skulls.

48. I's.: The Son demandeth a thousand skulls.

49. B-G-G.: Baugh-ghan-ghad demandeth a thousand skulls.

50. I's.: Baugh-ghan-ghad shall have a thousand skulls.

51. B-G-G.: Baugh-ghan-ghad demandeth a pool of human blood for His Son's silver boat.

52. I's.: Baugh-ghan-ghad shall have a pool of human blood for His Son's silver boat.

53. B-G-G.: Go forth, my brother Iod'a (Gods), and bring the skulls and the blood, for this is the time of the sacred solemn feast!

54. I's.: We will forth and bring a thousand skulls and the blood for our King. All hail! Mighty King of Men! All Hail!

(The Master now riseth to his feet, with his battle-ax outstretched, menacingly. The initiates upraise their axes and spears menacingly also, and walking backward, depart out of the temple.)

This here is the first illustration of orcus, dating back to the late 70s.

A fat demon like you can picture out of a classic christian tale about demons.

Is it a chance that he evolved to be quite like a bloodthirster in later illustrations? Muscled and more balrog-esque?

>12. B-G-G.: Know, then, ye Iod'a (Gods), I am descended from Baugh-ghan-ghad, the All Spirit of Light and Power. By Him incarnate in Mi, virgin of the corporeal world, My blood is fed by the souls of men. In the days before the flood of waters My Sire built a temple a hundred goo'en square; with skulls built he it, and feasted on their souls, uprising in the firmament, above the sun, companion of the stars. On the spirits of mortals slain, His spirit feasted full of rich strength, till all the world bowed down and called Him Master!

>13. ORUHK (the choristers from behind, concealed): All hail! All hail! O Master, man and chief of blood! We come from the abode of flying wolves and lions and bears, upraised in the Osk'oe (sky) rocks that feed the black earth, the thrones of mighty Ghads! Great Baugh-ghan-ghad called us forth; for the clang of thy battle-ax shook the stars, saying: Down! Down, O ye Ghads, to Mi (mother earth). My holy begotten Son, king of p. 628 men, doth feed His throne with dead men's skulls! Behold, O King of Men, these thy valiant fighters, from their birth, are reared as brother Ghads! O, slay them not, but teach them that he who would rule in heaven must begin on earth, and send his neighbors bellowing down to dust! Bring them before the altar, smoking in their blood, and on the ark (a chest which containeth incense) let them mingle in covenant with the Everlasting Son!

Pic related: a temple made of skulls.

"Oahspe, the product of automatic writing by a 19th century dentist named John Ballou Newbrough, is a hallucinogenic reworking of cosmology and ancient history. Written in a pseudo-archaic style, the narrative is told from two viewpoints: that of heaven and earth. For a large part of the book there are parallel texts from each point of view on the top and bottom of the page (hence the page numbers 'a' and 'b').

There are many moving, lucid passages, dealing with ethical and spiritual topics; however these must be sought out. For a large part, Oahspe remains a sealed book. It uses a private vocabulary which is only partially explained; and describes events of mysterious significance. There are hundreds of pages about the deeds of a vast array of Gods and Goddesses who roam the universe in enormous vessels. OED take note: Newbrough was possibly the first to use the word 'Star-ship'. There are tales of ancient prophets (such as Zoroaster, Jesus, Confucius, Moses, etc.) which have practically no basis in any known mythology or history. The illustrations are remarkable in that they presage surrealism by several decades; maps and views of an incomprehensible internal landscape."

for the axes and skulls. I imagine the other chaos gods are in there somewhere.

This is literally the grandfather of the "blood for the blood god, skulls for the throne of skulls" cry. My mind is blowing.

I know, right? It's kind of the Bible meets Lovecraft meets Warhams. And it's pretty hard to imagine the Geedubya staff taking inspiration given that it's a small part of a huge, obscure mystical text they would have had to have read before the days of the internet.

The only thing I associate with Orcus is a story my dad told me when I was little about his D&D days where his paladin, Fockewulf, made him scream and run like a bitch rather than face him in personal combat.
