As bad as it was mechanically, Mercadian Masques block will always have my heart, art-wise. It has that perfect balance of fantasy and realism without going full on CG nonsense. It has it's lows, of course (Molting Harpy?) but on the whole it just works so very well.

INNASTHRUTH. I really loved the human centricness of the plane. It was refreshing when you compare it to most of the other planes where humans are second fiddle erry where. It also felt smaller. Like Innastrad was only a continent the size of mainland europe. It felt earthly, and more sympathetic?

On a similar vein, I love Kamigawa's spirits for both art and flavour, bad as they might be. On any other plane, pic related would be an angel or cleric, sort of generic. On Kamigawa, it's a bloody fetus with horn-wings and a floating katana above its head. It rarely comes weirder than that in Magic.

>> No.30847154

I liked the more abstract and varied art of the earlier sets more. It felt more flavorful and fantastic. These every card is just a closeup of some "badass" or a monster and is also often only loosely connected to what the card does and often feels very interchangable. Like, I'm pretty sure that if you switched the art between all the red cards at random in the average set you wouldn't even notice something was wrong most of the time, and the same is probably also true for every other color.

Overall? RotE had some pretty cool lands. Though I guess by virtue of higher budget newer sets tend to look better, which is why all the hilariously bad arts (forest bear) were way back when.

The powerlevel was certainly a factor, but the japanese flavour was also a big reason the block failed. First because players were worried that it was gonna be like an anime or manga, which many players at the time didn't want, and second because it failed to deliver what players were expecting from a japanese block, namely samurai and ninjas, and was instead havily based on shintoism and included many spirits that, while being true to the souce material, felt too alien to most of the players.

Remember that WotC pay people specifically to figure out why people like and dislike every set, and they are very open what they did wrong once the block has rotated out of standard.

Urza block, easily.

I loved the fact that in Saga at least (can't remember if they continued through the whole block) each colour represented a different part in Urza's life, Blue when he was at the Academy in Tolaria, White while he was convalescing in Serra's Realm etc. Black was my favourite of all, his journey to Phyrexia. Mate, I play a KarnTron deck exclusively in Modern and I can tell you that it never happens. It sounds great on paper, but it'll never happen in a real match. If an opponent is beating you so badly that you need to restart the game, Karn is already dead.

>> No.30848747

It's an 'ultimate' ability. I'm guessing you have probably never played with a Planeswalker, but it's not easy to get to use a Planeswalker's Ultimate, as a result they tend to be big flashy things that either win you the game on the spot or make it very very hard for you to lose. Karn is 7 mana, that's not easy to achieve either, and takes him 2 turns without being interfered with to Ultimate. If you try to Ultimate him as early as possible then chances are you're only going to restart with say an extra land in play, while that is pretty fucking good it's not exactly an auto win. The way you use Karn is he normally hits the board, -3's and then you can start ticking him up and sculpting the perfect exile pile before you restart the game, at that point his Ultimate basically reads "I win the game" and your opponent will often just concede immediately.

tl;dr Yes, it sounds broken, but you need to do a lot of shit to pull it off correctly.

>> No.30848750

It didn't. Ever. That doesn't mean the game is bad, but balance has never actually been a concern. They print shit rares ON PURPOSE, after all.

Karn isn't broken, though.

>> No.30848751

Just think about when you'd want to restart the game. Surely not when you're winning, because that would be just retarded. And if you're losing badly enough to warrant a restart, you won't be able to get Karn online.

The chances that both Karns -14 gets online AND you're in a bad enough situation to warrant a restart are just not very good.

I was under the impression that Wizards had pledged to reprint every Modern 'staple' over the next few years. Modern Masters already took care of the majority of them, and then stuff like Mutavault in M14 and Thoughtseize in Theros is continuing the trend. I don't know if Remand in the latest Jace vs Vraska duel deck counts as a reprint for these purposes, I hope not, but it probably will be. I'm hoping that the Fetches will see a reprint in the next two years. If they bring back Landfall as the mechanic for M15 and reprint the Fetches that would be fucking insanely good.

>> No.30848991

The problem wasn't that the cards didn't work, just that they only worked with the set (which I thought was apparent from my post). Their design was all style over substance and they printed parasitic mechanics plus a lot of mechanics that might have been used in other sets but the name for the mechanic was problematic. You aren't going to give a beast Bushido or a rouge Ninjitsu.

I guess print more cards with those mechanics in a return set might make them more viable (particularly arcane) but parasitic mechanics are just bad for the game.

>> No.30849021

>Modern Masters already took care of the majority of them
That depends on what cards you mean. All the non-case cards, sure because they ended up being sold off to recover costs for the chase cards but the staple retained the same price because the card supply did not drastically increase and people were buying the packs based on their price.

>What could they do with Kamigawa?
>Didn't the major storyline happen there already?
My personal speculation, based on crappy summaries on some wiki:
Some of Kamigawa's influences leaked into Dominaria, namely around Nicol Bolas' homeland of Madara (read: Tetsuo Umezawa). If we get a Return to Dominaria set in that location, we might see some more samurai or arcane spells.

On second look, the gold backgrounds appear to be most prominent on gold-bordered Rakdos cards. I guess I assumed the rest of the gold-bordered cards would follow suit, but then again I really only played Rakdos in that block.

It's not much different than the usual "red cards having reddish art" and "blue cards having blueish art" themes but the gold art was more noticeable in this block than I'd seen before.

>> No.30853071

>>any plane that does get revisited will just get shit on by modern Magic design (Ravnica, Mirrodin, the slivers)
Except that Return to Ravnica was a much better execution than original Ravnica. Guild mechanics fit better (looking at you, Radiance), inter-set synergy was just higher, and the art was just that extra bit better.

So we didn't get reprints of Mortify, Electrolyze, Lightning Helix, and so on. That doesn't mean that modern design killed the plane.

>> No.30859311

Hoping a ruling question would be appropriate in this thread.

I was cubing today and casted Searing Blood, killing one of my opponents creatures and attempting to direct the damage to his Liliana of the Veil to kill her as well.

My friend was skeptical that that was possible. He seemed to have taken some issue on the wording of "controller of that creature" instead of "player" or something along those lines.

Anyone know if what I did was a legal play and why?

>> No.30859397

He's exactly right. If it doesn't say player, it can't mean planeswalker. Liliana is not the controller of that creature.

>> No.30859538

I like the detail on the thing but it tries too hard. Hell most of it you'll never recognize on the card.

No, he can. Just could just redirect the damage sent at the controller towards the Liliana, killing it just as if chucked a Searing Spear at the opponent.

>> No.30859921

Yup, you can redirect any noncombat damage aimed at a players face to their planeswalker. >>30859397 might be thinking of the Rakdos Charm ruling, where the damage has to go to the player because the source of the damage is the player's own creatures, not the charm itself.

RtR was my first set so while i like it, the Innistrad block really had me. Everything just seemed so intense (not surprising since it's horror-based). honestly i like a card's aesthetic much more if the art matches the flavor well. Essence Harvest is probably the best one for me in that regard, but pic related that also falls into this category and (hopefully) helps the guy arguing RTR has better art because i like this a lot

you're free to hate me for this but i liked the Duel Decks version much better than those two.

Not for me. The first cards I got were from Portal: Second Age. The first cards I actually played an actual match with were from Mirrodin, Odyssey and Onslaught block, while my first deck was built from Kamigawa cards, and yet none of those blocks or sets come even close to being my favorite anything.
