3. Take his shield

In D&D next shields are a good option because the modifiers are all way smaller and the system nerfed two-handing. +2 to AC is relavant when the balors only get +8 to hit being a shield specialized fighter gives special abilities to protect other party members.

Oh, also in real life a shield is basically the only way to block arrows.

>though if it's supposed to be like a longsword,

they arent.

the messers develop in the early 15th Century (though earlier knife-hilted blade forms existed as far back as the 1230's), as a single-handed weapon. they're pretty much interchangeable with the falchion in use, but the primary difference is that they're made by different people - the bladesmithing guilds are at that time in a power struggle with the sword-smithing guilds, and the result is that the knifemakers are trying to muscle into sword-maker's business and get some of the tasty, tasty profits. So they're using knife-making techniques (a grip with scales on each side, and no pommel) to avoid being caught out by the swordsmith guilds' laws.

They're also focusing on a different market, at first, the poorer, lower-classes as a defensive tool for those travelling etc, and likely to face bandits who arent armoured - so its designed as a light, fast single-handed cutter for unarmoured opponents.

No, a horse is an odd toed ungulate and a rabbit is a lagomorph. A Knife is an instrument composed of a blade fixed into a handle, used for cutting or as a weapon, a sword is a category of knife.

only a knife is a single-edged bladed implement with a handle attached either by a hole fitting around a short extension of the blade (a whittle tang) or slab sides pinned on either side of a thicker steel panel (scale tang), and normally designed as a tool for civillian use.

A sword is a (normally) two-edged military weapon with complex blade geometry with distal taper (which knives rarely have), constructed through the use of a tang peircing the mortise and tenon joint of a crossguard or guard, grip, and a counterbalancing pommel.

they are as different as a horse and rabbit. which is exactly the point I was making.

both are steel, both are sharp. beyond that the design criteria and the purpose are wholly divergent.

correct. J.P.Pupye and AVB Norman's typologies of the dagger and knife, for those of a particularly anally retentive persuasion.

its also a case of design - knives designed for fighting (whether 1 or 2-edged) tend to have very different blade cross-sections to those for general purpose use, same way guns designed for warfare, like a M16/M4 platform are very different to guns for sporting use, like a wooden-stocked remington 223, thats designed for the same ammunition.

Problem is most knives are only seen in profile, so you have no idea about the cross-section from the photo.

that's a basket hilted backsword.

"claymore" is simply a corruption of claidheamadh mhor, which just means "big sword". and can apply to two tnetirely different weapons - the 16-17th C two-hander, and the 17-18th C basket-hilted singlehander.

If you want something more medieval but along the same lines, I would suggest the Hanwei Tinker Great Sword of War.

The distinction between weapon and tool in the middle ages is not a hard and fast one. A battleaxe can chop firewood, a wood hatchet can cleave a skull.

>> No.29620531

>>29620277
I disagree. While they can do those things, they were shit at it. A battle axe is much thinner than a wood axe and without the wedge shape it won't cut wood well. A wood axe is too heavy to fight with very well, but in a pinch can be used in one.

That doesn't mean that there is little distinction between them. You could say that about anything. Ferraris and Minivans are modifications of the same form. 747s and F-22s are modifications of the same form.

Folded up to a million times.
That's it. I'm sick of all this "Masterwork Bastard Sword" bullshit that's going on in the d20 system right now. Katanas deserve much better than that. Much, much better than that.

I should know what I'm talking about. I myself commissioned a genuine katana in Japan for 2,400,000 Yen (that's about $20,000) and have been practicing with it for almost 2 years now. I can even cut slabs of solid steel with my katana.

Japanese smiths spend years working on a single katana and fold it up to a million times to produce the finest blades known to mankind.

Katanas are thrice as sharp as European swords and thrice as hard for that matter too. Anything a longsword can cut through, a katana can cut through better. I'm pretty sure a katana could easily bisect a knight wearing full plate with a simple vertical slash.

Ever wonder why medieval Europe never bothered conquering Japan? That's right, they were too scared to fight the disciplined Samurai and their katanas of destruction. Even in World War II, American soldiers targeted the men with the katanas first because their killing power was feared and respected.

So what am I saying? Katanas are simply the best sword that the world has ever seen, and thus, require better stats in the d20 system. Here is the stat block I propose for Katanas:

(One-Handed Exotic Weapon)
1d12 Damage
19-20 x4 Crit
+2 to hit and damage
Counts as Masterwork

(Two-Handed Exotic Weapon)
2d10 Damage
17-20 x4 Crit
+5 to hit and damage
Counts as Masterwork

Now that seems a lot more representative of the cutting power of Katanas in real life, don't you think?

tl;dr = Katanas need to do more damage in d20, see my new stat block.

Yet again, another one that's entirely wrong.

while these items often look very similar in a side-on photo, their cross-sectional profiles are totally different. A woodcutting axe is thick, to put mass into it to punch into wood.

a war axe meanwhile... well. see pic.

I still don't understand that meme. Where's the joke even from?

>> No.29626976

>>29626599
joke?

its a bunch of racist tards in the US, who've seen a bunch of equally racist types in the Yugoslavian civil war, who refer to muslims as "kebabs", and then go on about the wonderful, highly amusing idea of comitting genocide to "remove kebab" from the area they're in during the civil war.

its not even remotely funny, but, being directed towards the genocide of muslims, of course, /k/'s redneck brigade leapt upon it with absolute delight and think its the funniest, most intelligent thing they've ever encountered.

(by making reference to kebab, when the video is about a Kabab knife, I should've been clearer that I was mocking /k/'s ignorance)

but, no, you're the sort of drooling mongoloid who thinks that anyone who does'nt find that amusing is "butthurt", rather than for instance, being a reasonable fucking human being.

Actually that was a tactic a few times used in WW2. You would impact the tip of a guy's wing with the center part of yours and their wing would be break from the force. Of course bullets were usually preferable.
