I mean if EVERYONE has enough in common with humans, why don't they have enough in common with each other to crossbreed?
From a crunch POV, I can KINDA see why this hasn't really appeared in any books. Orks/elves kinda [when statistically compared] would equal humans when combined. Anything else would either be really weird to stat, or have the same aforementioned problems of becoming a human in terms of numbers.
But fluff wise I still don't get it.

>> No.29314872

Its because the people who made the games wanted to do lewd things with all the races they made, and they themselves were human.

There's no reason you can't say fluffwise that there are orc\elf hybrids running around, maybe just have it be so rare they don't get racial entries for them.

So, being that I know close to nothing about women, I unfortunately have no fucking idea how to use them in tabletop games. Sure, I've shoehorned in female characters left and right, but I've never really made a MAIN character out of one. I've played games where some of my players were females/had female characters, but I usually get really awkward whenever someone starts trying to seduce someone, buy a hooker, and so on and so forth.

Any advice for how to use/incorporate female characters?

>I mean if EVERYONE has enough in common with humans, why don't they have enough in common with each other to crossbreed?
not necessarily. there are a plethora of reasons why it could feasibly happen. Its just extremely unlikely, especially for a whole array of creatures.

>why can nobody but humans crossbreed with other races?
where the fuck did you get that ridiculous notion? Humans tend to be above average in cross breeding, some races can do it better (dragons, angels, demons), most races can do it a little worse (dwarves, gnomes, elves, etc)... although most of those can still crossbreed with some creatures in most settings

I roll orc/elf hybrids in my games.

Known as Orf's, and Elc's in short. Commonly refered to Orf Elc's. Which is then sometimes bastardized into "Or-Folks" as a racial slur.

I've also allowed orc/dragonborn

Because orcs are more fertile and are the universal rape and pillage race.

Their genetics also work like xenomorphs to an extent. Sure they're only technically half orc, but if they reproduce, they're only going to pass on full blooded PRC genetics, and none of the other race's.

This means there's a lot of inbred genetics.
Which is why Orcish tribes are so different that you can look at one and generally tell the tribe.

I go really deep with my world building.

In my world it's because all the demi-human races were bred from humans, the only non-demihuman that can interbreed is dragons, and that's because magic.

The demi-human races can't breed with each other very well because they are all offshoots in different directions, making crossbreeds very rare and typically very unhealthy when they do occur.

I generally set things up in a few camps:

Goblinoids, including all the orcs, trolls, bugbears, bogeymen, and etceteral.

Humanoids, which include all the elves, orcs, giants, guys made of fire, etcetera.

Dragons, which include all the kobolds, owlbears, monstergirls, and anything else that is blatantly magical in construction.

But they can, OP. In fact, that's how humans came about. Humans are what you get when all the humanoid races fuck each other constantly until none of their descendants know what they're supposed to be anymore. (In this setting, "human" would come AFTER "humanoid," etymologically)

>> No.29317007

Humans get to breed with other species in modern fantasy because Mr. Spock was half-Vulcan, half human.

But in all seriousness, you can, if you wish, imagine that all of the humanoid species can breed, but that Humans:Humanoids::Blacks:Humans.

Suddenly, "Humans" are "Just about anyone with Human heritage. I mean, they _look_ human enough, just with maybe a couple of features from another race." (E.g. sweet Dwarven Beard, pointy ears. Perhaps the fairest of human maidens have some Elvish heritage.)

I my setting, all races were made when the gods took their Primal Soul and merged it with some element. Hence Wood Elves, Eladrin, Drow and so on. The Primal Soul of Humans however, was especially rowdy and stung any god that tried to touch it. Hence why, when humans finally came into being, they a) had no direct, patron god and b) had a bloodline that was extremely mutable, leading to all the half-breeds of the world.

> Maximillian has been sneaking off in the night, knowing full well what foul beasts creep in the night.
> Uh oh, Maxi, a foul elf with long sharp talons, whatever shall you do? Strike? Run? Put on robe and wizard hat?
> Sadly Maxi chose the worst answer, DIPLOMACY. He is now stuck in the elf encampment, taking care of the Elf's brood and not being allowed to adventure.
> Do you want to end up like Maximillian?
> Don't try to reason with other races!

And I always try to bring about the slightly Nixon-esque voice Futurama uses.

>> No.29317885

Well in my campaign, humans can interbreed with almost all other races because they embody all 4 of the classical elements and their associated humours. The other major races embody a single humour, which makes it harder for them to breed with each other, although it's not impossible so long as their humours do not directly oppose

Very simple.

Preservers are bog standard wizards. Wizards from other settings are all defilers.

Defilers is a nastily quick and easy path to power. It also can (in at least one version of the rules) bring your charisma insanely low.

So yeah, non-DS wizards are all preservers, and there's no reason not to allow defilers (imo) in other campaign settings as well.

It never states what happens if it goes below 1, but I decided in my campaign, it could go below 1. There was a hilariously evil and insane necromancer defiler in one of my campaigns who had a charisma of -12.

>> No.29329855

>you fall into a coma at cha 0

We're talking about 2e, dude. Charisma isn't a metaphysical force of personality stat in 2e.

And I mis-typed, I meant to say, preservers are the DEFAULT wizard, wizards from other settings are preservers. Defilers are the variant.

The preserver class is DIRECTLY stated to be the default D&D wizard. Defilers use a different XP table and everything.

>> No.29330005

the defiler preserver split is bullshit anyways
defilers don't defile 24/7, they will run out. The sorcerer kings are all defilers and they build groves of trees of life and massive gardens to feed their slaves.
a preserver can defile once and go back to preserving... as long as other preservers don't find out.

>> No.29330034

In 4e, yeah, there's no difference between the two.
In 2e, defilers do in fact defile all the time and a preserver risks permanently becoming a defiler every time he defiles.

>> No.29330060

I know, but I am saying 4e was correct in fixing it.
and that the way 2e handles defiling is fucking retarded

>> No.29330111

See... everyone makes the humans are sluts joke but then goes right on perpetuating it. I actually made this canonical in one of my settings and it was a lot of fun (As in, other races canonically believed humans were unnecessarily lewd and could crossbreed with damn anything)

There's just something adorable about a perfectly innocent romance between a human and a halfling where her parents can absolutely not find out that she's dating a human because of long held prejudices.

>> No.29330130

The setting is a once verdant world reduced to desert by the ravages of sorcery. You don't get to that point by defilers only defiling once in a blue moon when in extreme need. So yeah, the 2e take on defiling fits perfectly.

You are also missing the fact that the reason why sorcerer kings have other spellcasters be hunted down, and why they cultivate greenery, is to feed their spells, which would be nonsensical if they only need to defile during a high stress fight.

It is however a nice way to jazz up arcane classes in 4e.

>> No.29330180

That's for XP wise, to Preserve you have to be taught that you can take only what you need. Otherwise you draw in too many by default. It's considered the 'default' wizard for Athasian Wizards, as a direct comparison. However a non Athasian wizard wouldn't know not to take what they can get. After all if they're not informed, and they figure out how to cast, they'd assume it would be like their weave. Which the weave automatically regulates the magic one can get, however that's because the god of magic.

>> No.29330288

>Which the weave automatically regulates the magic one can get, however that's because the god of magic.

What? The wizards of every setting but Forgotten Realms can cast spells just fine on their own without Mystra babysitting them.

Hell, preservers predated defilers even on Dark Sun.

Then it sounds like a retcon, i.e. it's not a reconcilable bit of lore, you have to either accept the pre-retcon version or the post-retcon version of it.

Much more likely it's a matter of GM taste - want to have the Dark Sun setting be a place where the myriad forces of the multiverse get their shit pushed in? take one interpretation, want it to be just another bit of the multiverse, all be it a crappy bit that no one could get much from, take the other interpretation.

1. Ridiculous caricatures instead of actual people.
2. Impractical
3. Not a justification for the bad crunch.

>> No.29331359

Its a desert planet. Due to defiling magic. If you want to tell tales of Athas still being a happy verdant place, the "only defile once in a blue moon" style of 4e fits better.

>1. Ridiculous caricatures instead of actual people.

How so? Your magic isn't really a big part of who you are, its about how you do things. Defilers can still be neutral. Preservers (afaik) can still be evil.

>walking the middle road

Defilers don't need to cast spells every fucking day.

>bad crunch

Cool totally subjective bias you masquerade as fact, friend.

>> No.29331455

and that's not a knock against 4e, mind you, 4e's treatment of Dark Sun in general (aside from the awful avangion and defiler dragon epic destinies) was quite stellar and memorable for breaking all the rules that 4e had up to that point (no intra-party conflict, no "evilish" stuff for PCs, etc).

>> No.29331757
