I once saw a pack of humans spare the life of a child... they murdered the parents of course and looted their bodies. But when the guy in shiny white armor with a holy symbol on it was about to butcher the children one of the others stopped him, they argued a bit about falling and then decided to leave the child alone.

So i guess that counts as an example of monsters acting googly-ish

My PCs periodically refuse to accept "always Chaotic Evil". I try not to railroad them and instead tailor the games to their interests.

It's kind of interesting when there's 2 elves, a half-giant, and a dwarf joining a tribe of Kobolds to lead them to a promised land where they can build.

They think outside the box and make their own fun. My job as a DM is much more coming up with challenges than coming up with stories, and that's the way I like it.

They're following the tribe's prophesy of a magical artifact around which they can build an Empire (Chichen Itza story basically). I'm also ripping this campaign off wholesale since I've always wanted to run it.

I figure I'll throw tribal politics at them, and allow them to recruit other tribes if they're smart about it. Walking Dead vidya style decisions and consequences.

But if they succeed, our setting will have Mayan Kobolds. Dunno if I want to throw things like sacrifice and war for captives at them as moral decisions, it's a bit too ripping off and their winning scenario should be the Kobolds establishing a true civilization rather than them playing god and controlling these little goombas like kings.

One of my characters married a goblin princess that my DM made as a joke. "You hear screams of a woman being tortured" lead to some Illithids preparing a victim. He thought "goblin princess" was a joke and we'd kill her and loot her magic tiara. I wanted to return her to her people, he had her say they were all wiped out.

So I rolled to make her a cohort. My character retired to a castle on the outskirts of civilization where the Undead tend to invade from, with a goblin princess spellcaster wife.

I'm still disappointed by Blizzard dropping the Nerubian plotlines in Wrath.

I mean, we were going to explore a giant underground kingdom, have two big instances and a raid, and a plotline that involved befriending a faction of the living ones like Brann did, cleansing the place of the Undead and Old God servants while battling the Old God worshiping factions and instilling a new royal family that we've been buddies with all along.

Instead we got two instances made up of all the half-done content, a smidgeon of helping the living ones before we forget they exist, then big boss Anu'barak popping in randomly in a raid later on just because.

That's the scientific basis of cuteness itself, isn't it? Certain features (large eyes and head, small digits etc.) are present in human babies; therefore, we are genetically keyed to like and protect things with those features and like a lot of other evolutionary traits, it spills over int
a fascination with things like puppies and cutebolds.

Metzen has said he wanted to do Nerubians as a player race from day one, but it could never happen due to issues like getting through doors without massive clipping, or mounts (since he said he never again wants a race that cannot use a mount). There's a lot of precedent for this. In the real world for instance, certain cultures viewed snakes as a symbol of wisdom whereas other considered them deceitful vermin.
It pops up in universe on occasion, too. Most often to highlight the cultural differences between "good" and "evil" societies. Like, say, the noble humans consider vultures to be contemptible scavengers but the Orc army proudly flies a vulture banner because to them it is represents surviving a world that wants you dead.

For that to work, you'd need TES like relations between races. Otherwise it's just "evil faction with evil banner".

In particular, I'd use human factions as the ones with the different symbols. Particularly human factions that get along with other races who would borrow their cultural values and aesthetics.

Two chivalrous knights questing, one is half-kobold and has a fang on his shield surrounded by beetles representing a fallen monster slain by people who work the land while the other knight with the typical lion tries not to look like he's with him.

That's because most domestic behaviours are actually neotenic; that is, "child-like." A lot of traits you want in a pet (sociability, ease of training, energy) are traits normally found in young animals and disappear when they grow up. So by selecting for domesticated traits, you actually select for animals that retain "puppy features" into adulthood, so you get a lot unintended secondary effects. For example, kneading and meowing in cats used to be kitten-exclusive behaviour but when we bred them to be better housepets, those came along for the ride.

Yes, but it's always the same thing, lions are good and rats are evil and if you don't follow that code you are the bad guys.
It's just that I want a setting where spider aren't immediatly associated with evil, take D&D for example the deity associated with spider is Lolth and if you took the elder scrolls it's Mephala. There are a lot of animal that are nearly always associated with evil: bat, spider, snake, vulture and other nearly always associated with good: lion, eagle, bear.
A setting, maybe with anthropomorphic animals without becoming a magical realm of course, who change that could be great. The lion aren't noble and chivalrous, they are just lazy tyrant, vulture aren't scavenger they are the undertaker and protector of the deads like egyptian made with the jackal etc...

I've always liked the idea of an undead raising a living child.

A sentient undead wandering the lands. Forsaken by his kinsmen for what he has become through no fault of his own. During his travels he comes across a burnt down village. This was not the first village he had come across that had been raided. It seemed to be a common sight these days. The kingdom was at war and soldiers could not be spared to fend off raiders so they took advantage of this and ravaged the countryside. The undead walked through the village. He looked at the corpses that littered the streets and part of him wished that he could know that he peace that they did. Suddenly he hears a cry come from a nearby building. He goes inside to investigate and finds an infant crying in the arms of a dead woman. He picked the child out of the corpse's arms and looked down at it. The infant suddenly stopped crying and stared back at him. It did not seem to be afraid of him. It was a refreshing change for the undead. He ran a hand over the top of the infant's head. This child was alone in the world just as he was. He took the child outside with him and placed it in a wheelbarrow along with what little supplies were left scattered around the town. He places a blanket over the child and began pushing the wheelbarrow out of town, singing an eerie lullaby for the child as he did so.

tl;dr listening to music and browsing makes me want to make shitty stories sometimes. Also the idea of an undead warrior changing a diaper makes me smile.

Or a lich that has been using magic to conceal his true form and appear as a normal human so he can be the benevolent lord of a town.

His undeath was full of strange twists and turns. Even he cannot remember how he came to be the lord of the walled city affectionately referred to as The Necropolis due to the vast cemetery that made up half of the town. The cemetery was practically a town of its own with its neighborhoods made of crypts and mausoleum estates. Even now he chuckled every time he thought about this. How fitting it was for him, a lich, to become the lord of such a city.

Despite his status as a lich, he considered his days of necromancy to be behind him. He finally got what he had wanted all those years ago. An unending life so that he may finally pursue his many interests and hobbies. In his city he was known as a lord of the people. He frequently went into town disguised as a living person to have casual conversation with the townspeople and even helped them with every day tasks. He was very happy with his unlife and he would have liked for the days to continue on like this.

You know what would be interesting? Anthropomorphic animals with cultures lifted straight from their natural lifestyle.

"Good evening, Mrs. Lion. Where's little Timmy today?"
"Oh, this new male came and beat ol' Mugasa up and took over the pride. He's a real traditionalist that one, murdered all their cubs the very next day he did."

>> No.29199458

One day he looked outside and saw that there was an army approaching his gates. It was the infamous barbarian horde from the south. The lich always assumed that they would leave his town alone. There was nothing to pillage there but stone but it seems he was wrong. They were out for nothing but blood. He thought about the death and ruin that would be brought on his townspeople if he didn't do something. He wanted to protect their way of life, even if it meant exposing himself as a lich. He climbed up onto the roof of his tower with his staff and he slammed the staff into the floor, channeling his magic. As he did this the enchantment that he had over himself to maintain a human appearance began fading. He let out a soul piercing screech and the necropolis came to life. Five hundered years worth of undead crawled out of the necropolis and scrambled to the defense of their city. They washed over the barbarian horde as a wave of bone and metal, leaving nothing but a sea of mangled flesh in their wake. After they carnage they shambled back into their respective graves to rest once more.
Many people saw what their lord was that day. He knew that they saw and knew that his time there was over and fled before he could be confronted. The people told no one of what happened. All that remained of their former lord was his staff that he left lodged into the roof of his tower.

I prefer the idea of a Lone Wolf and Cub story. The lich, made so in ages past out of desperation to defend his people from a long ago threat, stayed with his family. He mostly just heralded over ceremonies pertaining to births and weddings and funerals, marking that family as the last in the community to hold many traditions. He surrendered the position of head of the clan to his grandson and relegated most of his time to rocking in a rocking chair made by his daughter in ages past and maintained by each generation as they listened to his stories of ages past. As time went by though, he fell silent and new generations saw him mainly as a curiosity, treated more as furniture than a person. He surprised the family greatly when they, having moved and forgotten him, found him a week later having relocated himself to the new homestead porch and continued his rocking in the rain.

One day, his great great great great granddaughter fell ill. With only the mother alone at the home as the sons and daughters had gone to war as soldiers or mercenaries, she was resigned to die. Neither mother or child noticed the ever present creak of grandfather lich's chair cease as he set forth to the pines near his ancestral home to gather roots for a home remedy. He returned, shrubs in his weathered and yellowed skeletal hands, to find his descendant laying in a pool of blood, the house ransacked. He stared for a moment, then set forth on the most important task. He found a mortar and pestle handed down from his alchemist grandson that was mercifully unstolen and unbroken, and mixed a few cooking spices together with water from the family well and the roots of his procuring. He heated them for twenty minutes above two seasoned branches from an old fir set alight until they glowed with the fires of times immemorial. He spooned the potion to the girls lips, pausing so she could take ragged breaths, then painted the dregs upon her face in the shapes of the symbols that made her name (although they were imprecise as the new names of this age had new pronunciations that had to be accounted for as best as possible).

He sang an ancient song, the song of the girl's clan (giving honors to her father and his clan of course, and all the other clans that had since blended with his) in a voice that had not been heard in hundreds of years. He buried the woman in the yard, as fitting the new customs, but dressed in clothing befitting one on her way to see the gods (for the lich would never have his kin stand before their elders unpresentable). With this task accomplished, he checked in on the girl (who was sleeping, though still with overly-deep breath). He set about cleaning up the mess, mopping up the blood and setting the contents of cupboards spilled across the floorboards back into their proper places as best as he could guess.
He checked in on the girl again, said a prayer in the doorway, and returned to his rocking on the porch. This time, once again, as a protector.

See, that's the problem. I read through this an it's nuts. I'd have fucking funded the academy she's suggesting, it's not fucking chauvinist to say 'sorry, but we're not disrupting the entire fucking military heirarchy because it's not diverse enough, you want to fix that? It's based on merit."

Also, EVERYTHING about her character is seen through the misandrist lens. Everything. She's not got ANYTHING about her character other than that. It's bad fucking writing.

It's not a characeture. it's not comedy, it's not MEANT to be parody or satire. It's played completely straight, and that makes it awful.

If they had made it an actual parody, eg: the entire game was rediculous, rather than having waht you claim to be 'parody' stuck inside of a serious main plot line, then it's still bad writing. You can stick humor into a serious game, plenty of things do, but you can't make an entire friggin' major section of the game play 'parody' and the main plot be taken serious.

The cut content for the game mentions that Dwarfs, Elves, and Lizards can only reproduce with their own and Undead just raise children.

The Undead in the game reference children pointing fun at that. Apparently, even they can breed naturally somehow thanks to not being able to go into that. In addition the way the sequels (different game types) will build on the plot assuming you had heirs, who interbred with all races creating a new generation of dragons.

The boy had heard of the abandoned manse and tower, left from the Dead Lord... and he had also heard of the staff. The boy climbed the tower. He'd heard rumours that it still stood in the tower roof, and he would see for himself. Maybe it was powerful, maybe it could grant a wish. Magic granted wishes. Granda always said that magic can make wishes happen, before the lung rot laid him down with Granma in the family plot. Coins were scarce these days, and there wasn't a lot of food to be bought. Ma brought the meat ends from the inn, but there were precious little. His hand grasped the edge of the tower roof. His sure movements brought him over the edge, his eyes searching the roof.

There was a boy, and a staff.

3 men decided to rule the world. The Wizard trapped a powerful demon, the Architect used the demon's whisperings to make weapons of war, and the Warrior took them to conquer the world to end the non-stop wars for supremacy.
The Warrior became a King. But then a Dragon, creatures not seen since the times before Mankind, took the form of a maiden and infiltrated his court. She was fascinated by humans, and soon she and the king spent much time together. The Architect and the Wizard courted her, but she wanted the king.
The Wizard distanced himself, recognizing the beginning of a bad end when he saw one. But the Architect became jealous, and listened not to the demon's words, but to his promises. Winning the maiden became killing the maiden and the king with the demon's influence.
Meanwhile, the dragon queen bore a son who was whisked away from the court at her and the Wizard's wisdom. Then the Architect struck. He killed the Queen, and her last breath gave both the Architect and the demon inside him an orgasm that shattered his body. The Wizard trapped the demon within a weapon of war, an airborne battleship, and began to plan and prepare for the inevitable.

The King lost all hope, and became a whoring drunk. He produced many bastards, all insane and spoiled or else deprived

One day, years later, they all gathered and killed the King. They divided the kingdom and his armies, then waged terrible war on each other using the demon's weapons that the world was never meant to know (War of the World style giant robots are the most basic troop choice actually).

The Wizard then found the firstborn, the dragon, and brought him to the warship. He told the dragon he would be king with the wizard's help. Soon, advisers and generals who recognized his sovereignty flocked to him. He married a princess from one of the races in the world (other than human, since the Wizard recognized that being half human the dragon already had the support of humans).

The dragon resisted the demon's influence (or gave in and sacrificed his wives one by one, whatever). Then killed his evil siblings.
The demon broke free, and corrupted the minds of the mercenaries and thugs that remained in the world, gathering the remaining armies of the siblings to himself. The dragon finished him off, and banished him from the world forever. With his queen (if he still had one) he begat many sons and daughters who, themselves dragons, spread through the world.
