28692202 No.28692202 [DELETED]  [Reply] [Original] [4plebs] [archived.moe]

Campaign is about to re-start. PCs include;
Vargr Ex-Agent - Assault Rifle
Droyne Thief - Laser Rifle
Uplifted Dolphin - Flame Thrower and Armored/Pressurized Exo
Aslan Swordsman
Vilani /Scientist/Engineer/Hot Shot/Vacc. Suit Connoisseur

Party has just crossed back into their native imperial space, after a brief stint in the Solomani Confederation.
The Dolphin character will be a new addition, and I'm wondering how to introduce him... He's ex-dolphin military, and the party is currently at Wabash, in the McKenzie Subsector.
[its at the bottom of the page here:]

It's the first world on the Imperial border, so surely Solomani Military would have some kind of business there.
This entire Subsector (in our campaign) is in the process of being handed back to the Solomani Confederation.
Any ideas?

Wow, an almost fully alien party. That's kinda neat, actually.

They're a lot of fun. The Vargr is dour and controlling, and usually tries not to cause trouble. The Droyne Swindles every soul he meets, and Gambles late into the night.
The Aslan like decapitating things in vacuums, and knows nothing of aslan honor or clan.
No idea what the Dolphin character will be like....

Gendade launcher with various different types of grenades

Hey, did that guy who dropped that homebrew splatbook on the Birin ever come back and present a more complete version? It doesn't mention a couple things, like the age at which they start taking aging penalties, or at what year they start character generation and how long each term is.

You are a brave man. My players weren't even allowed to make alien characters for their starters. If someone needs a new character in a situation that could allow it to make sense I'd probably allow it but I like to present the imperium as a much more homogeneous nation than the sourcebook's alien population numbers suggest.

Call it 800-1000 displacement tons. Maybe 12000 tons mass or so.

Displacement tons are volume, not mass. Each is about 14 cubic meters. With warships, I tend to assume a density somewhere in the ballpark of liquid water, with most civilian ships I err on the side of them being buoyant in water.

I don't have the source for this, but those systems made of dust are the ones that have fallen victim to the core explosion. Basically a wall of very bad things expanding from the center of the universe at the speed of light. There is a mass exodus or something of Zhodani fleeing in it's wake.

A few questions I've been thinking about concerning Mongoose Traveller's law system:

When a planet is at a particular law level, is everything mentioned as being banned on lower law levels also banned?

Also, is it just me, or do the law levels seem bizarrely tilted towards the draconian? High population worlds tend to have higher law levels thanks to how they're rolled up, so I keep seeing law level 7, 8, 9 planets with a bunch of people and high tech- but they don't have freedom of movement, press, arms, and High TL items are banned from import. Is there something I'm missing here, or is MGT just assuming that the future is very grimdark? How can a planetary economy thrive when basically everyone and everything is banned from entry?

>> No.28709505

I have a question about armor in Mongoose Traveller. Reflec seems like a very powerful niche armor with no alternative from the core book, so it makes sense that everyone would want it. It does say it is supposed to be rare, but this doesn't translate well into actual game mechanics.

I was looking through the Supply Cataloge, and it said on page 133 under armor that standard protection from armor doesn't apply to energy weapons, and that you need special armor, such as Reflec, to protect from them. It doesn't mention this in the core book and I'm wondering if this is a new rule, or an oversight on my part?

>> No.28709911

14 cubic meters, actually. Basically two floor grid squares (using a 1.5m grid and 3m between decks) with a little slop.

I'm coming up closer to 600 dtons on >>28698346
but that's fast and dirty.

>> No.28709953

Law Level is first and foremost a roll DC to avoid harassment by local law enforcement, but this will also *usually* go hand in hand with certain things being outlawed. There isn't a universal criminal code across the Imperium; every world is going to be different. The locals may also not be living under the same oppression that the LL indicates for visitors.

>> No.28710336

I would also be happy to hear some house rules people have used in the past as far as armor/reflec goes. From where I'm sitting it seems like Reflec armor fills an arbitrary role in the game that mechanically doesn't need to be there

>> No.28710724

Under some prior editions, Reflec provided protection only against laser weapons, while the other armors from Cloth down provided very little or no protection against lasers. You could stack them for a slight surcharge into one suit of hybrid protection.

I thought this thread had died overnight!

But yeah all the solomani treat them like shit. The only reason they haven't been locked up indefinitely is that they're cruising around in a Solomani Courier and have Landing codes for the entire sector. Anyone who looks into their ship sees that they are on 'special duty' given by the Solomani Minister in charge of the Mckenzie Subsector

Before Virus, AI is going to be primitive, impersonal, and not truly self aware, though it can still be very effective. Such systems could run things like law enforcement using robots or ubiquitous cameras starting around TL12 or 13. Truly self aware AI won't happen until TL16 to 17.

After Virus, in the Fourth Imperium, true AI is all over the place, and you could have one or more running a world utterly by TL9 assuming the infrastructure was present. If robots are going to be part of the scheme, you'll probably want to be at TL12+ just for the robotic tech that isn't AI (power, etc).

>> No.28714571

The citizens are also going to have an easier time in general just because they know the laws, while visitors are coming in cold. There are going to be worlds where the high LL is specifically applied to the citizens ("I owe my soul to the Company store...") and visitors get a pass on the minor stuff, but weapons violations will still get you in deep trouble unless you have a local Baron to bail you out.

Other worlds may be more like Dubai, where a boatload of odd social requirements can trip up the visitor and local alike, application is draconian, and you need a lawyer, but deportation is more likely. Better hope the port is fully Imperial, or you may wake up on another world, having been deported at random by Cold berth...

>> No.28716389

Haha, not really, not yet. I guess I might as well share the subpar ones, though.

I started them off on the little world of Samelegro. It's a backwater planet populated mainly by miners. I figured it'd be good to start them in a safe little microcosm with low law and little pressure. For their first mission, I threw them a little milk-run of sorts- the local gunrunner offered them a discount if they put a bug in the Miner's Guild office. I -expected- them to steal in at night, pick the lock, plant the bug, and get out. What they -did- was assault and knock out a janitorial crew, steal their clothes, plant the bug, and then psychically suggest the security guard who came by to fuck off.

They never did return the clothes.

Another time, I had them go after a beast which had been genetically altered to survive in hard vacuum as part of a black ops project. It had a stare that was paralytic if you botched your save for it. I messed up on this one, because it's my first time doing Traveller- I made the monster from scratch, but it turns out I severely overestimated the amount of dakka they would bring to bear, giving it armor which was prohibitively tough. After almost emptying all of their small arms munitions on it and having one of the party near unconsciousness and desperately scrambling to patch his vacc suit (Samelegro has no atmosphere), they finally killed it by ramming it with their ATV. They ended up strapping the dead thing to the vehicle like some sort of bunch of retarded space-rednecks with a deer and bringing it back to the station, where it was promptly taken off their hands in exchange for hush money from a man in black.

This is what made me decide to playtest my encounters before using them.

YEp, that sounds like players. You plan for what you think they'll do. Then you need to plan for what 2 clones of the joker and a pyrokleptophile would do. If you're lucky they fall somewhere between the two. Otherwise the second plan will serve you well.

>> No.28717951

It's been a while since our last session, mainly because I'm still in college, going for one of them highfalutin' graduate degrees. I don't like railroading, even though I get the sneaking feeling that it's actually what they -want- me to do, so I've just been cobbling together a few possible hooks in my spare time.

1. Government sponsored terrorism. Samelegro is an important hop for drug smuggling into Colchis. The G-man from last time offers them a job to attack and destroy a small smuggler ship at port which is full of narcotics. In exchange, he offers to pull some diplomatic strings and get them a license as private security contractors in the system, giving them more freedom with their loadouts.

2. Repel a pirate boarding action. I know they're trying to hop the next transport to Colchis, so I reckoned I could have a small pirate vessel board and attempt to take the ship they're on. I figured this would be a good opportunity for them to gain a contact with the transport Captain and maybe net a free sublight vessel if they play their cards right.

The third one I was tinkering with I was kinda iffy on. Might just scrap it entirely. Probably gonna stick with number one.

>> No.28718275

In general, I've got a few directions I'm thinking about for the long game. Like, really long, though. Way far away.

The one I'm probably going to go with is sort of a PMC campaign. Colchis is a binary system, and though the mainworld claims suzerainty over the whole of it, that's not the case in practice. At least one planet openly claims to be independent. This hasn't been much of a problem historically, but with the sector seeming to move further and further towards war, and Colchis already being a third-rate power, cementing their control of the system is looking like a wise decision to the government. I'd go this route if it begins to feel like all my players want to do is shoot stuff- basically put them in charge of a mercenary company and have them participate in a planet-hopping campaign of pacification, installing governors in their wake with a Letter of Marque clutched in their grubby little hands to empower them to hunt dissenters in space, too.

>> No.28721661

That's the approach GURPS Traveller took, diverging from the assassination of the Emperor and not doing the Rebellion at all. No Rebellion, no Virus. *in theory*. The Cymbellines are still part of the setting, though.

The original timeline, with the Rebellion, Virus, and the New Era, are still the Canon timeline. This line was advanced by the 1248 books several years ago, but with Mongoose hopping back to 1105 and staying there, no further timeline advancement has occurred.

Back to basics

>> No.28738845

You'd be suprised how easy it actually is to put fighters into a ship design. They need like maybe 12 tons of docking port each, that'd give you some wiggle room, plus a stateroom for the pilot, a ton of fuel if you want very long deployments, and maybe a ton of ammunition storage. 18 tons, if you're giving that fighter luxurious accommodations.

>> No.28740053

Subcraft like that should also get a maintenance guy, so 22 tons. As a smaller docking port isn't going to be best for maintenance, you may want to add a common large bay so the fighters can be rotated in at need.

If 400 tons is preferred, I can widen the entire hull by one grid, which would add about 48 tons, increase the fiddly outline bits in a few places, bulk up the nose dock thingy a little, then hang a custom Cutter (non-Modular) or Pinnace underneath for the rest.

A group of hijackers infiltrate a cruise liner, taking up positions in the crew and among passengers. Just as the ship is about to enter jump, the hijackers seize the bridge with extreme prejudice and reset the jump to a different system. Even if the ship does call for help, it's long gone before any could get here.

During that long week in jump, the hijackers work to methodically take over the ship. With the PCs fighting back, I imagined something like Under Siege and Die Hard, but aboard an interstellar cruise liner. But I also thought about a game run as the hijackers, and how exciting that could be if done right.

Depending on who wins, either the hijackers wind up with a major trophy or the defenders enjoy a week-long party as they head home.

I could use some ideas for possible bounties. I've got several in the works, but more could help.

Currently the group ditched the "main" plotline I tossed at them, and skirted a trap station that would have had a great tech payoff if they had gotten through its defenses before probing and ditching. They play it very safe, but now their ancient ship needs maintenance before it will fly again. What sort of trouble can they get up to on a high-class colony...
