I've seen larger estimates for Allied POW casualties, but haven't looked into the subject enough. The USSR was fuckin' purgehappy and Japan under what equates to military junta was pretty damn brutal. Best men of the generation from all powers involved thrown away like that. A goddamn disgrace.

That's why I can't play FoW. WWII is just too tragic.

When I look at museums filled with tanks and uniforms I can't help but think what could have been. US, England, Germany, and Japan should have been putting down Stalin and dividing up the rest of the world, not killing each other. Bringing civilization to the far corners of the world and establishing glorious empires.

Instead we get a war that puts America miles above everyone else, shatters England's empire, hands Chinese over to Mao, and with half of Europe enslaved by the Bolsheviks. Followed by every shithole banana state demanding independence and then crying that they're poor and demanding handouts.

(Also, Photoshop is not ideal for something like this. It's Illustrator or InDesign that's the right tool for this job.)

Unfortunately, the SS-Panzers didn't really use StuHs in Normandy. I would have put the one I have in there otherwise.

An added bonus of using the German list is that it's almost fully painted.
I'm currently working on 4 of the mortars and 2 observer teams, which just need oak leaf pattern camo (summer), some light brown highlights on the bases and some static grass.
Apart from them, I'll only need to paint 2 infantry teams with Panzerfausts from my Scout/Tank-Hunter platoon.

Are British airborne infantry platoons inferior to American airborne infantry platoons?

The Americans always seem to get extra bazookas all over the place while also getting the British Gammon bombs, in addition the Americans also usually get LMGs and HMGs in their lists that can perform combat attachments while the British HMGs are their own little platoon.

Doctrinal Difference.

Yank Airborne platoons were intended to be essentially self-contained forces, much like Armoured Rifles. Their support was mistly parachuted and comparatively light.

British Airborne doctrine intended for the Parachute troops to almost always be supplemented by gliderborne airlanding troops, and gliderborne heavy support. Hence British Aurborne had airlanded 17pdrs, Mortar carriers, Large Arty Batteries, and Tanks.

(And, let's be fair, apart from that clusterfuck in Madagascar, the Airborne Armour performed it's role adequately.)

So yeah. Vastly different airborne doctrine.

The reason is that Battlefront don't really understand how the PIAT was employed. There's a couple of studies that collate stats from surveys by both Canadian and New Zealand officers after the war. There's probably similar surveys sitting in archives in Australia and the UK. A key part of the surveys was infantry weapon effectiveness. The Bren gun was rated as the most effective weapon with the PIAT second. Interestingly these weapons only really came into their own when the habitual British supporting weapons (arty and the Shermans 75mm) were unavailable, Winter 44/45 for the New Zealanders and the push into Germany for the Canadians (street fighting).

Battlefront ignores that the PIAT was likely just as easy to 'lose' (in order to draw another replacement) as the Bazooka. They also ignore the huge issue of the weapon at the Battalion level which meant pretty much every time you saw a Universal Carrier you could expect a PIAT. 5 DCLI conducted a nifty little ambush on The Island during Market Garden, knocking out 3 Tigers and capturing 2 more. They used PIAT's firing in groups of three, with at least three groups, easily collected from part of the Battalions transport. Kinda ridiculous that's it's impossible to get even close to that in FoW, especially when the US can take half of each platoon in Bazooka's by the Bulge.

Was the weapon unreliable and dangerous to the firer? Yes. Did your average British soldier think it was useless? Yes. Though in the hands of experienced troops it turned out to be one of the finest and most versatile infantry weapons of the second world war.

lol 10,000. 2 Million Germans died in the immediate aftermath of the war. Most as the result of the expulsion of ethnic germans from former Poland, Czechoslovakia, Romania, etc. Many were as a result of the mass rapes committed by the red army, in addition a large amount of german families committed suicide rather than face a life of depression and revenge perpretrated by the occupied countries.

What makes it worse is that the major powers were well aware but acted extremely slowly to stop the process. Eventually they gave many germans sanctuary, but only after months or torment, rape, and oppression.

Embarrassing, but understandable to an extent. One has to put themselves in the place of the key policy makers at the time and consider that Germany had started two world wars in living memory, resulting in the deaths of millions, including the wholesale mechanised slaughter of millions of civilians. The idea that a bit of suffering might persuade the Germans not to start another war seemed reasonable.

Besides, once the scale of the food crisis was brought to the attention of those policy makers, they moved rather quickly. Food aid started being shipped into Germany in April 1946, after all. The collapse of agriculture and the terrible winter of 46/47 didn't help matters either.

Indeed. At the time, we were allies. And while Stalin might have been quiet about it, or stubborn, they were quite thankful for the Lend-Lease program. It was probably one of the few times in history EVER, where the US and Russia actually got along amiably. Hell the lend-lease shermans they were receiving had packages tucked away for the tank crews that included blankets, whiskey, and other goods. Operation Unthinkable had a very accurate name for it's time. I chalk it down to how everyone automatically associates WW2 Germany with Nazis. And you're right, not all of them were 'bad'. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with appreciating some of the technological advances Germany made during WW2, or loving their tanks, or weaponry. Having seen some of their legendary vehicles in person, there is certainly an awe-inspiring presence about standing before one of the last remaining Tiger 1s, or one of the 80-something Jagdtigers ever made. It doesn't help when the History Channel kept turning out 'documentaries' where they keep going on about how super-special-awesome German gear was to the point you wonder how the Allies won the war.

(A clue:it wasn't just the weight of numbers, although that did play a part).

>>28508521
well, unfortunately the Wehrmacht were a fairly visible extension of the Nazi regime, despite what the men on the ground thought. And unfortunately there were Heer who were party to warcrimes, just there were Allied soldiers who were too (and not just the soviets-it happened on the Western Front as well, although certainly not on the same scale and not as publicised).

I mean, the best tank ace of the war was Kurt Knispel and he was Wehrmacht and a pretty cool guy in general and you never even fucking hear about him, instead it's all about fucking Wittmann (who nobody at least on the Allied side even heard of until Villers-Bocage when Goebbels starting using it as an example of German superiority-great job on perpetuating Nazi propaganda, historians).

Of course then you get people like this: >>28481612 I think we can all agree this sort of thing is douchebag behaviour.

That's because Knispel wasn't exactly on good footing with the party, what with him being extremely laid-back and violationg military procedure a ton of times.

I play WoT casually, but much of the problems with German stuff doesn't exist now. Except the Tiger 1e. In my opinion, it really should be a Tier 6. Though some of the weakspots on German tanks leave me scratching my head at times, it's no different than the weakspots on other tanks. I'm sure AT-2 drivers really hate it when they take round after round to the cupola.

The biggest problems I really see with WoT, is the KV-1s really should not have the 122mm, and those damnable cloaked Hellcats throwing rounds off you at 200m range...

During the early beta it was pretty bad. It was basically impossible to shoot moving tanks from a distance because of bad netcode and hit detection, especially if you had slow gun traverse. For some time, the penetration stats were completely fucked up, too, with guns having values based on different testing angles.
Oh, and my personal favourite: Counting the entire space alotted to crew members for criticals. Which meant that Soviet tanks, which had less space for their crew ro sit in had smaller chances of getting critted.

Soviets were too expensive (all those models!!!) and Axis just felt kind of weird (because of the you know, Nazis). Might have started off with Americans but at the time aside from decent artillery and bazooka spam didn't have a lot going for them in comparison to Brits.

I've since sold off all my British for Germans. Its more fun being the bad guy.

Yeah, but those kinks all got worked out. There were also matches where you'd see someone jump into solo queue with a Tier 1, and end up against Tiers far beyond it.

Compared to where it was, there isn't as much problems now. And the whole 'Russian bias' bit doesn't really apply anymore. Even after the accuracy patch, Russian tanks still have shit accuracy and piss-poor penetration. You don't even get HEAT until late-tiers, whereas the chinese IS-2 gets HEAT (Soviet IS has the older front end and APCR). they guy doesnt wear "Arbeit macht Frei" shirts or anything..but yeah..did have several SS divisional shirts and the ocassional Deaths Head tshirt and he ALWAYS plays SS Panther lists so thats always a bit offsetting. but other than that very nice quiet polite guy

I play germany for several reasons
1)All my life I have always been willing to play OpFor in any game I have ever done. Cause OpFor is seen as the 'bad guys' and most people want to play the 'good guys'. In WWII games playing OpFor means playing Germany. so I have always just naturally fell right into playing germany in any WWII game. I also usually end up playing Warsaw Pact forces in any 'Cold war gone hot' scenario-not because I have any like of the soviets (that godless communist Grog will attest to that), but because they are OpFor.
2) Germans lost the war so there is a bit of a fascination with "What If". I have a feeling of acheivment when I do win with a force that historically lost. This goes along with enjoying playing the losers. hell I played a Custer force one time in a recreation battle of Little Big Horn, played the Zulus several times in
3)Germany had some bad ass uniforms. I dont care what anyone says. They went to war in STYLE

And I have never played an SS list. all my lists are Herr infantry lists. The poor bloody foot sloggers.

Germans get shat on by the MM. So often you'll be up against Russian tanks that will basically never be bounced by your armour, but have the guns to hurt you every time.

The only real advantage you have is that your guns tend to be on average slightly more accurate, but at closer ranges that's basically irrelevant anyway, and the game favours Alpha Strike style damage which the Russians have always been better at.

My guns can't hit shit accurately, have long(er) reloads, and tend to have poor penetration value against anything their tier or higher. The exceptions to that are highly notable ones, such as the fucking god-hammer ISU with it's ridiculous grind to the top gun, or the KV-1s which does feel like cheating sometimes.

Again, primary issue I see with German tanks is the Tiger 1e should be a Tier 6. The Porsche variant and Tiger 2 are both pretty much fine. And German tanks always make far better snipers than the Russian ones. Even the Russian TDs can't aim for weakspots worth shit.

GHQ also apparently has their own rules system, which I'm very tempted to check out. Apparently its supposed to be a quick, fun little ruleset to use with your minis.

Take care, the latter does change balance because you'll get effectively more cover per square unit of ingame measurement. This means that the game now favors units balanced around shorter effective range.

Yeah, if you're using the 7.5cm, it's ROF is heinous. Otherwise the 8.8 has a solid ROF, but it's still better as a ranged sniper. Brawling it out, and ducking in and out of cover, isn't where many of the German tanks excel.

>> No.28511573

>>28511531
On a regular 180x120cm/6'x4' table, you can easily field 6000-8000 points per side if you use the inch measurements in centimeters (32" range becomes 32cm range instead of 80cm).
Thats a solid 4 companies per player (or 4 players per side).

>>28511546
You have no idea what you're talking about. The RoF allows you to fire two shots for every one of the opponent, making you rather dangerous in corner fights when its not too busy.

same here. I also like the idea of having a couple of bunker boxes in my coat pocket and being able to wargame it up wherever I'm at.

Food taking too long at fancy french restaurant? Time to reenact the flanking of the Maginot line! Except instead of massive bunkers there's croissants and instead of hills there's cutlery and napkins.

Let me tell you though that transporting 6mm comes with some difficulties, especially if like me you refuse to glue the turrets to the tanks.
Barrels like to bend if the models are jumbled around, you see. Theyre fine under normal use but transport requires great care. Magnets can only do so much if you put them in your pocket.

but an AT of 14 for a 75mm? thats way to silly. and the ROF of the AMX 13 is way off..but we have debated that to death in another thread.

Yeah, but the damage output on the 7.5 is pretty low. The top 8.8 dishes out some solid damage, but what really carries the Tiger 1 against Tier 7s is it's massive health pool. Otherwise it's damage is fairly moderate, where many other tanks are pushing 400+ damage a shot.

I'm interested in the Hero formations, and yet another Soviet Self Propelled Artillery list.

I still think it's funny that the hero lists are continuing the "Half-Assed Veterans" approach they went with on the Udarny. But I'll take what I can get. I just wish the Hero Tankovy allowed for Lend-Lease Sherman formations, too.

Probably. I'm mostly excited for Hero Tankvoy because it means no more Hen&Chicks bitching.

Gotta agree with Eagles, here:
>>28514398

Hero lists definitely won't be spam. You're looking at around 13 T-34s counting CiC, with support elements (also in limited numbers). It'll look more like an American or British trained Tank list. But with 'half-assed veteran' rating of Trained & 3+ to all Skill Tests.

Should be a nice and interesting change of pace for Soviets, to say the least. But I don't think it's going to be that much of a bandwagon setup. I think it's going to come down a choice of fielding Soviet Tanks the massive numbers of a company level with H&C, or fielding a somewhat more elite platoon level without. I think the Medium Assault Gun list is going to be brutal, though.
