Hey.
I'm trying to get a campaign going, centered around modern-day soldiers fighting supernatural opponents. Think X-Com meets Buffy.

I want to start things off with a setting document, things like how the unit works, where they're based, major NPCs, etc.

And then I thought that maybe /tg/ would like to get in on this.
So, here's a thread.

>> No.28237394

What are you running this on? Delta Green or WoD with Hunter: the Vigil?

>> No.28237464

>>28237394
I'm not sure yet. Those are definitely options, as are systems like Savage Worlds and GURPS. Hell, even Phoenix Command if I really want to focus on the military side of things.
But for now, I'm more interested in fluff.

>>28237464

I would just rip off Stargate, mountain base, have a general in charge of the dam thing and your players are a bunch of specialist cherry-picked to be in the unit from various military branches.

As far as antagonists go, I would just go onto the SCP wiki and pick a couple of things from them and supplement that with the typical popular supernatural stuff, werewolves, ghosts, etc.

How pedestrian.

The correct answer is aufhockers, aufhockers everywhere.

Pretty much what I had in mind. I was also planning on having it as part of an international organization, just to give the players the option of playing something other than Americans.

OP here. Here's a little something to get things started off.

On paper, where it appears at all, SCS stands for Special Countermeasure Service. Very few people know the truth; that the first S stands for 'Supernatural'.

Things like werewolves, vampires and sorcerers exist. For how long, nobody is quite sure, but it is only in the last few decades that any hard evidence has been found.*
Perhaps these things only recently came to exist. Maybe they've been in hiding. Nobody is quite sure.

All over the world, isolated incidents alerted governments to the presence of the occult.
Bizzare ritualistic murders in Germany; a team of British soldiers killed on a training excercise with the only survivor reporting werewolves; A sudden spike in campers reported missing in America's national parks, some turning up drained of blood.

As these incidents stacked up, nations gradually realised that they weren't facing isolated incidents, but a golbal problem.

*And carefully covered up, of course.

Ideas for the base:

Well, a Stargate/X-Com style underground base is pretty much a must.
Inside, I'm imagining a strange mix of technology and mysticism. The comms room holds satellite uplinks, radios and telepaths.
Seers have their own chambers from which they conduct survailance operations just as important as any satelite.
Storage vaults for recovered artifacts and labs for studying them.

>> No.28238484

If you want to give it a real global feel, I'd suggest creating several hooks/encounters set in different parts of the globe that you can expand on later. Maybe let the players pick which ones to respond to.

Like, maybe one day they're tracking down a penanggalan in Malaysia, a week later they're fighting a Whowie in the outback of Australia, and then you take them back to Germany to shoot ogres in the Black Forest.

Depending on how grimdark and morally grey you want this campaign to be, those telepaths may or may not be doing this voluntarily. They may also may or may not be people this organization has kidnapped from around the world, lobotomized, and crammed Beyond Top Secret Cold War-era cybernetics in to basically turn them into human comms networks.

Well, that's a tricky one. Kidnapping civilians would cause problems for secrecy, so I'm picturing the unit recruiting talented individuals from within the armed forces. To begin with at least.
As need increases, things might change, rogue elements might decide that things like ethics take a back seat, a decision that comes back to bite the unit in the ass when the masquerade is broken.

Seems to me you'd need some sort of multi-purpose monster hunting/anti-magic kit. Nobody wants to pull the trigger and find he's shooting mere lead bullets at the werewolf, or whip out the wrong religious symbol to hold off the vampire.

Right. Which is why I mentioned this was solely based upon how dark you wanted this game to be. Me? Whenever I run games like this one of the big themes is always how, in the words of Nietzsche, "he who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster." What horrible, reprehensible acts are not only expedient but REQUIRED for the continued survival of the human race?

In other words, it always turns into pic related.

I'm currently running something like this and my solution to the problem of various creatures from different folklore is the following.

You have something called Dark Energy. This Dark Energy is a sentient being. The only way this Energy can manifest itself is by using the beliefs of people. Beliefs in the folklore kind of way, not whether they believe in it or not. For example, if a culture has stories about werewolves the energy will be changed by the story and will appear as a werewolf (With all advantages and weaknesses of the kind of werewolf defined in the story.). With this you can have all kinds of creatures, even the ones based in different religions without contradicting yourself.

If you're basing the shit the PCs run into off of super natural in popular culture ala werewolves and vampires, change up the weaknesses or how they work

IE: silver does hurt werewolves, but its nowhere near the one hit kill/Oh god it burns thats shown in movies

Or for vampires, sunlight doesnt kill them, but makes them revert to a more beastial, primal form thats dumber and easier to trap/kill, but no less dangerous

So, specific NPCs...

>A slightly creepy child seer who came to the unit on her own. Something of a problem. On one hand, she's a threat to security and a very powerful mystic. Besides, she volunteered her services. On the other hand though, the fact remains that you are having a child serve in a military outfit.

>>Soldier with a supernatural bond with animals. Expert dog handler and goes into combat with a German Shepherd. (Yes, I'm using CoD here.)

My advice for this NPC? Play up the "supernatural bond with animals" angle. There's something about this guy that's not quite...right. Oh, he's friendly enough. But he doesn't just fight alongside that dog. No, he does fucking everything with it.

He takes a bath with the dog. He sleeps in the fucking kennel with the dog. Actually inside the thing if he can get away with it, just outside the fence with a sleeping bag if he can't. Some people swear to God they've seen him eat dog food too.

This dog is his best fucking friend. He connects more with this dog than with people. It isn't threatening. It's only mildly creepy. It's mainly just...fucking weird.

I would play up that angle with your NPCs. This is a weird-ass unit, and everyone here is not quite right in some obvious or subtle way.

A couple ideas for you OP

>This one guy who never seems to sleep. He isn't the fastest or strongest, but he always takes sentry position and night watchman. When pressed about his talents he just shrugged and said "I just don't feel tired is all."

>He always walks around barefoot. No kidding- no matter where we are he always goes without any kind of boots. But that doesn't seem to stop him. He'll run straight through a field of barbed wire and will get all cut up on his legs- but nothing on his feet. I've seen him kick straight through a plank of wood too. One time he figured out that the hostiles we were looking for were underneath our position- it must be the vibrations or something.

>We all call him "Mr.Lucky". It's one thing to get lucky on the job, but that's nothing compared to this guy. When you manage to find some ammo for your specific weapon just laying around in some random witch's creepy house in the woods, or just so happen to need to take a piss and stumble across the nearly dead body of our comrade we'd been looking for for the last few hours and almost given up hope, to even having the enemy's weapon suddenly jam and not fire right when it was about to bust a cap in you, you've got some serious luck right there. Just wish it would rub off on me sometimes.

DC did a short run called Human Defence Corps. President Lex Luthor made essentially an X-Com like project so the world wouldn't be reliant on supers as much. The series was pretty good and they fought TONS of occult shit, infact one of the characters even comments that for a unit designed to fight aliens all they really did was rumble with the supernatural.

Anyways, the bad news is there is no trade but you could probably find a copy online, it has some neat characters and stuff.
