No matter how much work Ral put in, no matter how hard he tried, he was ignored. And when something's big enough that it gets all ten guilds of Ravnica involved in it, it would sting like a bitch to get absolutely zero credit.

Literally no block since Zendikar has had any major Nicol Bolas intervention; his involvement in NPH was so little it might as well not have been there. He's done nothing in Innistrad and RTR.

Honestly, Niv probably barely notices Ral as anything other than standard-issue guildmage. Ral has kept it a secret that he's a planeswalker, so that isn't on the table.

Really, the fact that Niv doesn't notice him is part of what rankles. Ral wants to be recognized for his achievements, but the way Niv does business is to hand out pieces of projects to people at random and then shuffle them all together.

He's been in three non-core sets. As of Theros, so has Elspeth.

Furthermore, in terms of actually being involved in the story, there's Return to Ravnica. That's pretty much it. His entire role in Zendikar was to show up at the Eye of Ugin and briefly fight Chandra. None of the planeswalkers in Lorwyn were actually there during the storyline.

...so, like everything since Time Spiral that wasn't a repeat? Even then, I'm only discounting the repeats because they aren't introducing new settings.

Magic is a visually and flavorfully vibrant brand at the moment. The flavor of the worlds in sets is much more apparent and tied to the cards themselves than it has been at any other point in Magic's history.

By the end of it Liliana was a junkie, the Chain Veil was heroin, Garruk was the abusive ex-boyfriend coming after her for giving him a VD, and Jace was the cool-headed distant but smart and thoughtul guy who works in the firm across the street from her trashy apartment and he's SO DREAMY BUT OH THEY JUST AREN'T SURE IF THEY'RE GOOD ENOUGH FOR EACH OTHER

True, but my point was that they could have had a Ravnica block about the fall of the guilds and the rise of the Gateless, just as Scars block was about the fall of the Mirrans and the rise of the Phyrexians.

The reason they did not is that people love the guilds. A lot. Guild identity is one of the biggest hooks they have, and might actually be stronger than players identifying with planeswalkers.

I don't think the Commander or Summer Multiplayer products will introduce cards for known characters. So far the legends in them have all been new, just like the M13 legends.

Time Spiral referred to old plots and settings using rules AND flavor while still adding some really unique/iconic elements of its own - I'll never forget those 'lava bubble' monoliths in the island and blue art.
It also pooled a massive amount of rules and keywords from past and present and played around with them, showing what the design team could do given free reign to fiddle with complexity.

Of course, that went over about as well as you might expect with casual players and corporate, so now Wizards has New World Order to protect their sales figures from nasty things like complex rules interactions and excessive creativity.

A lesson in spacing out cool idea, I should hope. I don't think that's an unreasonable one, especially now there's supplementary products for such things.

Sets can't just be bundles of 2-5 cards with every cool idea.

Look at how they can return to mechanics now and do new things with them. No need to use all that up in multiple mechanics just for one novelty block.
