The furry fandom, as a whole, are very openminded and accepting of others, because the idea of "anthropomorphic animals" can apply to all sorts of genres from fantasy to sci-fi to superheros to modern-day and more.
Think of it as a big house-party. Everyone's in costume - you've got an elf talking with a Jedi, a soldier serving drinks to Batman, and so on.
Some folks have taken advantage of this by slapping a tail and fox-ears on their fetish and sneaking into the party so they can say "people accept me so I must be okay".
Kinda like how you see folks here on /tg/ who only care for slutty lolis and mind-control and shit like that, and disguise their fetish-fapfuel as "elf slave what do?" type of threads.
Either way, it gets the attention of the folks like Something Awful and /b/ who revel in trolling and others' suffering and such, they spread the misinformation that the minority are the commonplace, and there you go.
