They're warrior-blacksmiths, lots of artificer armor and flamethrowers.

But they also have a crazy hardon for saving the humans of the Imperium.

Like in the Helsreach novel when they almost lose a Strike Cruiser just to drop a few tactical squads into the city.

They were needed in the wastes to the north of the city with the rest of their chapter, but their chapter master heard the civilians of helsreach were in danger, so he ordered the squads to drop there, secure the shelters, and then walk to the wastes to join them.

Then he got a message from the Iron Hands,
"THX FOR THE DISTRACTION. WE'RE ATTACKING FROM THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION NOW. FLESH IS WEAK. IMPERIAL GUARD SUX LOL. KTHXBAI."

Yeah, it's definitely tough to get a nice yellow. I like the chapter a lot but they've got a hard colour to paint.

For the same reason actually I wish Ultramarines didn't have yellow trim, and went with something like Blue-White or Blue-Black instead (heck, even Blue-Gold would be an improvement).

GW pushes Ultras all the time as *the* Space Marine chapter to start with, but this tends to result in some tremendously eye-raping paint jobs - usually some variation on searing neon blue and acid yellow.

I kind of wish Black Templars or Blood Angels would come back as the default starter chapter; it's kind of hard to really screw them up too badly.

Hey, while we're talking about color schemes, I'd like to ask you guys' opinions on a possible paint I'm considering for a custom chapter of mine, the Storm Souls. They're descendants of the Blood Angels who hail from an oceanic hive world where the cities are floating islands.

Because the world orbits a hot blue-white star, there's a lot of solar radiation, and their gene-seed mutated (possibly intentionally, Cursed-Founding style) so that the melanchromic organ produces anthrocyanins, chemicals that absorb radiation, are typically found in plants, and are deep purple.

To that end, they have a tri-tone scheme. One arm is red, representing their progenitor chapter, one arm is blue, representing their ocean home planet, and the main body and legs are purple, externally representing the unique blend of blood and water, internally representing their distinctive, hidden mutation.

Thoughts?

You must be living in a cage. Ultramarine dominance in the players died out in the first half of 5th edition. It was about that time that more codexes had been released, and 5th edition had truly evolved into Tankhammer 40k, which is why people called it the melta edition. Armies that packed tons of meltas and tons of flamers were very competitive. Now ask yourself which of the Space Marine special characters gets some ridiculously good buffs to BOTH of those types of weapons across his entire army? The Salamanders character. Since then, they have slowly gained ground until they are easily one of the most mainstream chapters that you'll see out of the vanilla codex, alongside Ultramarines.

When the Wolves came to burn down all Magnus and his Sons had created, he just stood there and watched. When he watched the men who winningly gave their lives for him, he didn't move an inch. When Magnus had the legion go to the warp, he simply sat on his new throne watching as his legion became subjected to the flesh change. Ahriman tried to undo Magnus' damage. Black Templars. Because of this.
>In The Crimson Fist short story from Shadows of Treachery, much of the Black Templars mindset is explained when Sigismund reveals to Rogal Dorn that Euphrati Keeler told him he needed to stay with Dorn at Terra instead of lead the Retribution Fleet to Isstvan, and Dorn effectively disowns him as his gene-son in a rage for questioning his purpose and believing he knew better than the Emperor, making him no different than Horus. This explains why Sigismund was made High Marshal of the Black Templars and so much of their psychology: their hatred of psykers, the "No Remorse" part of their Battle Cry, and the ten thousand year crusade. Sigismund was not rewarded, he was exiled, and the eternal crusade is his attempt to atone in the eyes of Rogal Dorn.
