Segments within the Ultramarines and descendant chapters operating in the Ultramar Sector eventually began to realize the need for irregular warfare, the ability carry out the kind of hit-and-run and stealth missions that weren't sufficiently covered in the Codex Astartes.

Unwilling to direct an existing Ultra© brand chapter in this direction, it was decided to create a new one. However, also unwilling to let the rest of the Imperium know of their second-guessing of the Codex, the assorted leaders of the Ultra©™ consortium decided that the new chapter should be presented as a descendent and affiliate of the Raven Guard (upon creation, the new chapter's master would contact the Raven Guard and tell them that they had created the new chapter during a drunken campaign in the Ultramar sector). This new chapter would be know as...

Just a tl;dr version for you lazy fucks out there.
We are the War Angels.
We hail from the frozen feral world of <fuckifiknow>
We were created to fend of an encroaching enemy. It rules itself, mostly, but is kept for recruiting.
Founded in M41, 26th founding, successor chapter to the Blood Angels. Our founding father is our Chapter Master and he is known and hated by the foul orks.
Our Demenaour is to Uphold the Honour of the Emperor.
WE HAVE DEEP, UNEARTHLY BOOMING VOICES.
And also sees well in the dark but crappy in bright light.
We also deeply hate Rogue Traders, the xeno-loving bastards.
In general, we are suave swordfighters and masterful men.
In fact, we like to bombard from orbit. A bit of pragmatism never killed anyone, right?
We have been trained to fend of the Warp and its foul denizens, and our killing is focused and driven, no distractions allowed. Under our fortress, a small warp rift resides, and it is used to train warp resistance in the recruits.
We do not utilize Apothecaries.
We are a death-cult, not grieving over the dead.
Our chapter is over strength.
Our ally in our quest is the Administratum of the holy Empire, and our sworn enemy is the unholy Chaos Marines.

Hmm. this gives me an idea.

What if, by some stretch, the War Angels also take care of people? As they love the Ecclesiarchy, it could be that they see shepherding the normal, pure humans as their goal in life. Taking care of them and protecting them. Apothecaries proved unnecessary when it became popular practice for all to learn such things, at least to a small degree. Basic training in medicae would be common, and higher training for those that feel it's important would be as well.

Splendid. This is great stuff.

We didn't really ever define how unique they were as an organization, did we? We should cover that. Obviously, it can be tied into their personal mutations - DEEP BOOMING VOICE and seeing in the dark (but poorly in bright light) - as well as their cultist attitude. We'll also need to describe what put them on the hate train for Rogue Traders and a certain Chaos Marine Warband. Is there a warband that's been causing them trouble? A good spin on the "death cult" thing could be that they believe every citizen of the Imperium to have a preordained death that fulfills some part of a grand plan laid down by the Emperor. Their goal is to preserve themselves and their civilian charges and ensure every one of their subjects reach that designated hour. This can mean that they'll babysit a detachment of IG until a particular battle, where suddenly they'll depart and leave them to their deaths since their "ordained time has come". The ordained time is determined by Chapter librarians and chaplains using the Emperor's Tarot to divine the fate of the chapter, associated charges, as well as particular individuals.

>> No.24011458

This would also explain why they love the Ecclesiarchy so much. If the religious folk are those that cover the "Ordained" times, then they'd hold a rather high point in the chapter's love for humanity.

So I had a go.
The headquarters of the War Angels are a solemn refuge from the otherwise bleak gloom of the feral ice world they have named as their home. The Crypt is warm and dark, air thick with incenses and embalming oils. Upon columns hundreds of feet high are carved the names of every honoured fallen the War Angels have observed. Countless millions of these scrawlings pockmark the walls of their home. The administratum turns to them for the tumultuous night time struggles, to mark the numbers of the fallen and to record it. The Crypt is visited frequently by officials, plumbing further down the depths of the crypt for those most recently deceased. Unfortunately, this has given the War Angels a reputation as an omen of death – what could be more concerning than see the undertakers watch over your fight?

For as long as The War Angels have "been", there is only one other faction that is more hated then these avaricious meddlers; for they know not what it is to uphold the Emperor's honour, to smite a foe with their own hand and feel the foe's life essence ebb from their body, to feel a perfectly balanced blade in your hand and think of it as an extension of your own body rather than a foreign object, to create, maintain, and complete arduous, time-consuming, detailed lists for the further glory of the Chapter and to a lesser degree the Administratum. They give early warning to any settlement the Tussock nears. Whenever a Tussock comes into close contact with a settlement vast crowds gather to watch it's passing.
Not to mention hopeful youths load up their gear and head out to slay the massive beast in an attempt to join the Angels.

How about a winged, white hourglass containing blood-red "sand", i.e blood? We get both measured time and blood, and the whole angel deal.

Also, concerning time and the Administratum. Maybe this world contains an ancient archeotech timekeeping device, capable of keeping time even in the most dire circumstances through the vibrations of the worldy essence itself? A device whose services the Administratum requires to run smoothly? That would explain some of the "time"-focus.

I was thinking that we can integrate the idea into the initiation ceremony and the small warp rift inside the planet. When the initiates do [INITIATION] they catch a glimpse of their own death date - much like in Death Note when you get the shinigami eyes - but only a glimpse enough to know when they'll die (and a small hint at what they die of). This means that most of the Death Company will be composed of soon-to-die marines.

Okay, I've never done writefagging before, but here's an attempt:
The War Angels chapter, descendant of Blood Angels, chosen of the Emperor. These hardy warriors were stationed on Cardalis; an icy, feral planet to help stop an advancing Tyranid splinter fleet. The result of their battles with the Tyranids have let them to become suspicious of the Easterly planets, believing most if not all to b infected with genestealers. They are especially wary and loathing of Rouge traders; who search space hulks often infested with genestealers and hold no true allegiance to the Imperium. Thus, the War angels claimed Cardalis as their homeworld, keeping themselves close to the Hive fleets and ever-watchful of these outer worlds.
Beneath the settlement of Stormweld rests their main fortress- a massive catacomb-like structure with names of countless fallen soldiers of the Imperium. The Task Angels is just that: To bring themselves and others safely to their appointed death date, where their souls will be taken into the emperor's care.
Each War Angel is given a prophecy shortly after enlistment. They are to meditate on these words, for they reveal their appointed death. They are to survive until that time and protect their fellow brothers as well as any other whose time has not yet come. It is also with this prophecy that those destined to die in each battle lead the charge- forming temporary Death companies and taking as many of their enemies with them as they can.

Continuing on,
Because the War Angels strive to live until their appointed time, every member is also an apothecary- taking care of themselves, each other, and their charges (Often IG). As a result, there are no full-time apothecaries in the chapter.
Their genes are mutated slightly; causing their voices to be loud, booming. Their eyes are strong at night, but weak in the day. Thus they fight at night, their voices carrying in the darkness like the call of death itself. Having the War Angels reinforce your planet is a blessing and a curse. They will protect you for sure, but eventually they will abandon you- and that is when you will die.

Lastly, their hatred for the warp and resistance to it is very strong compared to many other chapters. This is due to a small warp rift beneath their fortress. Conscripts are taken down to stand before it, peer into the depths, and resist the warp. When the War Angels had cleared a chaos cult from the depths of their now home, an entire company led by brother-captain Masters fell to chaos and escaped through the rift. To this day, the War Angels train their minds and bodies to resist the warp; reminded of the Master and his company who is still out there somewhere, taunting them.

WRITEFAGGOTRY INCOMING

It was almost time. He'd seen the signs. The ork banner, tilted just so and stained with human blood. His favoured enemy was here. His time had come. He'd spoken of it with the librarians. They'd nodded somberly and passed him to the chaplains, who had blessed him and sent him to the frontlines.

There he was! In the back, swinging his massive cybernetic arm, urging his fellow xenos forward. He glanced to his left, to the platoon's sargeant. "BROTHER-CAPTAIN." his voice boomed, even through the filter of his mask. "HE IS HERE." He fired his bolter once more, before pointing to the ork nob in the rear.

The captain nodded to him, and the squad's vox channel crackled. "BROTHER RAGNAR'S ENEMY HAS COME." As one, the others laid down their bolters, drawing their heavy chainswords, before gathering around him. He breathed heavily, not with fear, but with anticipation as he drew his own blade.

"WE GUIDE HIM NOW TO THE EMPEROR'S TABLE." The formation moved forward, driving into the orks with ferocity and zeal. He chanted a short prayer, tranquil amongst the melee around him. They advanced ever closer to the ork leader.

The ork nob grunted, cursing at his subordinates before charging at the brother-captain. His words held no meaning as the prayer continued. The captain moved far too fast for the ork, pushing away from the blow. "FOUL XENO. YOU ARE MINE." said the marine, ending his prayer. The others fanned out, forming a loose circle around the two. Any orks who tried to rush in were cut down in short order. The ork spoke again, his words lost as the marine moved into a combat pose.

Now came the true test. Would he slay the beast beforehand? He knew not, so he dove in, prepared to fight to the last. As their weapons clashed, the vox spoke once more. "IT IS TIME FOR THE DEATHSONG." all around the circle, the marines began. A chant at first, deep from their throats, washing over the battlefield.

The chant rose in volume, and became stronger. Adrift on the wind, the song carried to the rest of the battlefield, and the other marines joined in. Before long, the entire company was singing, tales of deaths that would come before, and deaths that had yet to come. The marine's mind clouded slightly with anger as the song continued. He had to kill the ork soon.

"AND, BROTHER RAGNAR-" they sang, as the power claw fell. He dropped his chainsword to his side in defeat. Very well. "CRUSHED BY CLAW OF ORK..." The others whirled on the nob, tearing him apart as his claw buried in the marine's chest. "AND MANY MORE TO COME..."

If the ship was safe, the bell would be rung twice; if it had sunk, the bell would be rung once. (This had the practical purpose of immediately stopping the sale or purchase of “overdue” reinsurance on that vessel.) Now it is only rung for ceremonial purposes, such as the visit of a distinguished guest (two rings), or for the annual Remembrance Day service and anniversaries of major world events (one ring).

A similar procedure could be in the center of the temple. Tolling for the loss of a company, marine, regiment, or ship.

>>24013193
I can imagine them, in the middle of the night, singing terrible and mournful dirges. Their amplified voices carrying into the enemy ranks and disrupting sleep. Also, with their penchant for shock and awe imagine this:

The barricades were silent. For the first time in weeks the barricades had fallen silent! Praise be to Tzeentch! The Tempus Dominus marine crept up the hillside towards the entrenched position of the War Angels. His comrades in arms fanned out around him, eager to enter the fray with their Great Enemy.
For weeks the Angels had kept up their Hymns. For weeks, not one of the Dominus marines had taken a second of sleep. Now was their chance to storm their trenches! Exact their vengeance! This world would fall to the glorious machinations of the Everchanging One...As he neared the crest, the Dominus marine began tapping lightly on his bolter.

Onetwothreefour. Onetwothreefour. Onetwothreefour. The pattern repeated and was taken up by the others around him. They were within arms reach of defences when he saw the Chaplain rise from his position at the top of the hill.

With eyes of burning hatred the Chaplain looked down upon those fallen few who so scorned the blessing of the Holy Emperor. he looked upon them, cowering in terror. he looked upon the unholy and raised his powersword to the heavens, addressing his captive audience.
>Chaplain Fylis Bozemurn: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=BpgAxcvbkUQ#t=3s

It was too late to run, to hide, to save himself. The Death Company were upon them! Limbs were hewn off and the air was choked with the fumes of revving chainswords. That day the forces of the Tempus Dominus were driven back to their hellscape of a world. The War Angels had prevailed once more.

The initiate opened his eyes for the first time in what felt like hours. The procession had been blasted with floodlights, causing many of them to groan in pain at the bright light. He'd had his eyes squeezed shut, led along by the deep singing of the chaplain in front. The room was dark, and his eyes adjusted, he could see the whole room, despite the apparent lack of light. The changes had been happening over the past few weeks - yet all of the initiates had made it this far.

The room was massive, seemingly hewed from rough stone, but as he looked closer, he saw they were not imperfections, but words carved deep into the stone. Before he could investigate further, he was distracted as the chanting stopped and a booming voice filled the chamber.

"INITIATES." It was the chaplain, Standing below a massive, ornate bell, large enough to dwarf even his power-armoured frame. "YOU HAVE UNDERGONE MANY MONTHS OF TRAINING. YOU HAVE BEEN GRANTED THE GENESEED OF OUR CHAPTER. NOW, IT IS TIME. AFTER TONIGHT, YOUR INITIATION WILL BE COMPLETE." There was some stirring among the more excited initiates, but it quickly died down as the chaplain scanned the room. "YOU HAVE BEEN BUILT UP AS BRINGERS OF DEATH, AS GREAT SERVANTS OF THE EMPEROR." His voice reverberated off the walls, giving it a slight echo. "NOW... WE WILL BREAK YOU DOWN. YOU WILL LEARN HUMILITY." The initiate nervously took to the stage, his hands grasping a thick, knotted rope hanging from the bell and rang it as hard as he could. With an almighty clang, the bell filled the chamber with noise, the initiates shaking at the force of the sound. The chaplain and the others hummed in a deep tone as the bell-ringed doubled over, gripping his head.

After they recovered, the initiates watched as the man on stage trembled in place. "AS THE BELL TESTS THE LIMITS OF YOUR SENSES, THE EMPEROR TESTS THE LIMITS OF YOUR MIND." The initiate on stage screams in agony. "...AND BREAKS THEM FOR A PASSING MOMENT."

The screaming stops, and the man looks dazed for a moment before trying to stumble off the stage. Two brothers in power armor grab him, and he flails uselessly in their arms as the chaplain approaches. "WHAT DID YOU SEE, BROTHER TARSUS?" The man half-whispers something to him, and he frowns. "VERY WELL." He turns to the crowd assembled, drawing his powersword from its sheath.

"SEEING ONE'S OWN DEATH." The crowd of acolytes murmured. "THAT IS THE TRUE HUMILITY. TO KNOW THE HOUR OF ONE'S DEATH." He sweeps the blade across the air in front of him, before turning on the powerfield and causing the room to glow faintly. The man shook uselessly, straining to move from the stage as the others watched with rapt attention. The chaplain's voice burst into a song, deep enough to reverberate in the initiate's very cores. "BROTHER TARSUS... WHO FAILED THE JOINING..."

There was a collective gasp from the initiates as the chaplain brought the sword down on the squirming man's head. it split like an overripe melon, the flesh searing away as he drove the blade through him. "AND MANY MORE TO COME." He turned off the powerfield, and sheathed the still-pristine weapon as the two brother astartes carried the corpse off the stage. One of the initates pushed his way to the front, shouting before being grabbed and dragged to the front.

"WE HAVE A VOLUNTEER." The chaplain said, turning toward him as he was dragged beneath the bell. "You KILLED him! WHY?" The initiate's voice warbled, adjusting to the changes it was experiencing. "IT WAS HIS TIME." The chaplain answered for all to hear. "RISE, INITIATE, AND RING THE BELL." He was thrown down in front of the heavy rope and surrounded by the armoured Astartes.
Glancing around at those who surrounded him, he gripped the rope tightly, before swinging it.

The bell tolled, and he was baffled by the sound waves as those he was surrounded by the humming of the astartes around him. He gripped his head, nails drawing blood as he fealt his skull pounding with pain. His eyes rolled into the back of his skull-

and he woke, walking, being pushed bodily by another of the armoured astartes, shuffling him quickly past what must have once been the site of a great battle. There were ork corpses all around, and one of their banners, bent at an odd angle, splattered with red blood-

He blinked and it was gone. now he stood, mentally recoiling as he realised a helmet had appeared over his head. He was fighting orks. There was one in the back, leading them, with a strange metal arm, and HE KNEW.

He woke with a start, his face wet and his vision filled with red liquid. he coughed, and the liquid splattered on his hands as he picked himself up. The blood- it was blood, he realised- dripped from his face as he looked up into the chaplain's grim face. He nods to him, before the chaplain put a heavy hand on his shoulder. "AND WHAT DID YOU SEE, BROTHER RAGNAR?"

So it appears that this is the final portion of the initiation, and that they have already gazed into the Warp.

The previous part - where he saw his own death - was where he gazed into the warp.

Or, the warp-gazing is the cause of their darkvision.

As I wrote it, either would work.
