Sup /tg/, newfag to the 40k tabletop here. After some last minute Christmas shopping, I found that I had quite a bit of left over cash and decided to start my involvement in the tabletop game, rather than just video games and books, and bought myself a Cadian Battleforce along with the Codex. I've started assembling and painting, which is going well thanks to some threads I lurked the past couple of months, though I do have a couple of questions.
1.) Do 200pt games happen often? I see a lot of mention of 1000pt games, which I would love to do, but I'd much rather get some experience on a smaller scale before investing more money into something I might not have too much fun with.
2.) Will the rulebook give me a good idea on how to play? I've gone over the Codex and have the special units for the guardsmen in there down, and I've watched a couple games, though I'm still rather confused as to how rounds "work" so to say.

Otherwise, general IG thread.

You made oopsy number one.

Never start out as IG. Too expensive and too finnicky to put together, IG is all about your tanks and big guns. 200pts is not really a match most people will wanna play as it's over rather quickly, 200pts is like an intro game at best. You'll need to get the rulebook, as a codex wont be a great help.

I haven't had any problems with the assembly so far, though I haven't gotten to the Chimera nor command squad yet. As for the cost, that's why I was hoping if the smaller games were something people did so I could play while I saved up and expanded the army for the larger games.

No, as there are several armies who cannot even field the mandatory 2 Troops and 1 HQ without breaking 200pts. The most common small game is at 500pts and, if you wanted, you could play around with someone at a little under that limit if you don't have the models if they're experienced enough to adjust their army for you.

>2.) Will the rulebook give me a good idea on how to play? I've gone over the Codex and have the special units for the guardsmen in there down, and I've watched a couple games, though I'm still rather confused as to how rounds "work" so to say.

The rulebook will only get you so far since there is a lot to digest. You'll understand the basics just by glancing over it, but you're still going to forget a special rule here and there and you'll probably forget important things like an entire phase if you're new. The best way is to go out and play the game with someone more experienced as they can guide you further on what to do. You still have to have a firm grasp of the rules yourself since, if you're playing with someone who is also new or just straight up wrong when it comes to several things, you may be getting fed incorrect rules.

All right, thanks. Any suggestions on what I should use to get the extra 300 points? I can't remember the math off the top of my head, but I think I got the 200 by deploying the two guardsmen squads as veterans with carapace armor and dropping either the weapon teams, the Chimera, or both. Based on 1d4chan, I was thinking of going blob with the melta-chimera eventually.

>More words about the rules
Yeah, I figured the rulebook would give me the basics, but I wanted to just double check. The store I got everything from is rather friendly and they have an introduction program there so I'll check in on that before I start actually playing.

Me and my two bros are getting into 40k as well.
I'm playing ork, bro 1 is going space marines, bro 2 is going tau.
Bro 1 bought the marine megaforce and split the assault on black reach with me so he's pretty much set on whatever he'll need we decided.

Bro 2 is buying a tau battleforce and as of now he has a hammerhead a group of fire warriors and a 4 Crisis suits.

I have as of now 5 burnas 5 stormboyz 10 nobz 1 warboss 20 boyz and 3 deffkoptas, I plan on buying 2 ork battleforces very soon.

The only way 200 pts usually happens is if you're playing a kill team match.
