[ERROR] No.22141971 [Reply] [Original] [4plebs] [archived.moe]

has anyone else noticed how for the most part space marines ironically really don't fit with the warhammer 40k universe? i mean let's review:

>wh40k: mankinds golden age is over and a lot of technology has been lost and more continues to be lost, technology is looked apon more like magic than science.
space marines: are created using advanced technology and use machinery that their techmarines are constantly improving, nearly everything they use is centuries ahead of the rest of mankind.
>wh40k: moral grey and black everywhere, every faction is some kind of evil.
space marines: (some minor exceptions excluded) paragons of virtue and chivalry, complete boy-scouts.
>wh40k: mankind worships the emperor as their god and protector
space marines: don't, they consider the emperor as a hero of mankind but still only a mortal man.
....
...
...
am i missing anything?

...huh. How bout that?

Well if it helps, Space Marines as a whole are generally getting worse, as successive generations of gene seed invariably succumb to mutation and impurities, and the stocks of pure gene seed are exhausted. Furthermore, the techniques that space marines use for creating new space marines are becoming more ritualized, the procedures becoming rote actions without any understanding as to why.

Most of the chapters are very superstitious in their own way, and caught up in traditions that harm their cause.

In a way, they are a slowly fading hope of a bygone age. Should it last long enough, the Imperium will get to watch as each chapter dies out one by one. Some in a final glorious battle, others through their own backwards institutions.

>> No.22142144

Yeah, there's a metric shit-ton of 'exceptions' they get in regards to the setting. 40k really would be a much better setting if marines were either removed from it, or held in their own little 'Horus Heresy' setting.

not at all. Marines are an important part of the setting and help set the tone as a horrible a grim place.

That even such mighty warriors as these can be corrupted and are barely able to stop all the imperiums enemies is a big part of the grim dark. Too remove them would make the setting less grim and dark.

I know it's no longer fashionable to Wardhate, and to be honest he's more of a totem or symbol for the continuing attempt to push the moral ambiguity out of 40k, to make noblebrightness in a world where the point has always been grimdarkness: the point of 40k is that the cost or survival is usually terrible choices. I suppose it's ironic that perhaps the cost of 40k's survival has been terrible choices. But that doesn't make it better.

It would be like if Seinfeld (No hugging, no lessons) suddenly added a laugh track and an adorable moppet with a lisp. That's what the Spess Mehreens are.

They've never made sense in the 40k universe and it's unfortunate that they are so ingrained in the setting.

>>22142262

Yeah, yeah, the Spess Mehreens sacrifice their humanity to save it blah blah blah, I'm not buying it. Especially when the Ultras have fucking families. This removes the tragedy of life without reproduction. Not that the 12 year old SM player understands that.

But for the time being, the fact still is that space marines are kidnapped from their homeworlds before puberty and hypnotized and cut apart and stitched back together so they can spend hundreds of years killing for their fascist god. Even if it's described in glowing terms. ‘Sometimes I ask myself how we reached this point,’ he said. ‘Fighting ignorance and slavery with genocide. We can either live in delusion and darkness, or become something we hate. My nights are haunted by the shrieking of a blind girl I failed to save, and a warrior with a mechanical parasite in his skull and the daemon wrapped around my soul are my closest brothers.’ He smiled wearily. ‘We’re definitely on the wrong side, Khârn.’

The true strength of the Emperor’s Space Marines was in their genetic coding. Not their strength, mighty though it was; not their discipline, for many lacked that virtue almost entirely; not in the armoured fist of their massed armour battalions, which in truth could be crewed by lesser men with little difference.
No, their strength was a testament to the Emperor’s shrewd foresight for conflict, for he made warriors that could endure more than any other mortal. Secondary organs compensated when primary hearts and lungs grew tired. Wounds that would leave a man or woman stunned or crippled scarcely slowed a legionary at all. They were children harvested from a natural life, grown purely into creatures that were able to tolerate pain and damage beyond measure, and still keep going.
The Emperor, for all his supposed faults, understood war had come full circle. In his Imperial wisdom, he’d bred soldiers to win those ancient wars that would be fought again in the future.

Also Angron is boss.

Angron listened, but cared little. Even then, he was a stubborn creature, taking spiteful pride in his own isolation.
‘Lorgar wages war with a quill,’ he said, ‘but the galaxy will not be brought to heel by crude philosophy. Your ideals are meaningless.’
‘Ideals are what we fight for, brother.’ There was something colder in Russ’s tone, then. A decision had been made, frosting his voice.
Angron had laughed, the sound rich and true. ‘Such pretty lies! We fight for the same reasons men have always fought: for land, for resources, for wealth and for bodies to feed into the grinders of industry. We fight to silence anyone that dares draw breath and whisper a different opinion from ours. We fight because the Emperor wants every world in his hands. All he knows is slavery, painted in the inoffensive cloak of compliance. The very notion of freedom is a horror to him.’
‘Traitor,’ Russ hissed.
Angron stood tall, still grinning. ‘Do we give choices to those we slaughter? A true choice? Or do we broadcast that they must throw their weapons into the fires of peace and bow down, faces pushed into the mud like beggars, thanking us for the culture we force upon them? We offer them compliance or we offer them death. How am I a traitor, wolfling? I fight as you fight, as loyal as you are. I do the tyrant’s bidding.’

Two words for you:
Fluff Entropy: The tendency of all fluff to eventually bend to the wills of the boardroom executives, whose 12 year old focus groups and marketing department have informed them that puerile power fantasies will sell more product than a believable depiction of the absolute horrors mankind must afflict itself with in order to sustain its defence against aliens, mutants and heretics.

Back in the day there was a much greater emphasis on the fact that most marine aspirants never got their power armour, either becoming horribly disifgured, dying of organ failure or tissue rejection, or just not making the cut and getting turned into a lobotomised automaton.

Characters were smaller, unlike the current giants who stand astride planets like they were spacehoppers, like how Ward started writing them.

>Look at that fucking video game.

Operative words: "Video Game".
They have a limited amount of scope for telling the kind of story you'd really expect to hear out of the 40k-verse, so they go with something told in the style of the humanity-fuck-year hollywood movies to keep average joe rooting for the "good-guys".

I console myself with the fact that at least they can never un-write RT/2nd.

The marines still might be genetic super soldiers but they are every bit as mortal as everything else. Chaos is more the madness related to the world-bending of psykers than an "organized" god.
