Where does the stereotype of female players being better at roleplaying (or just more interested in the roleplaying side of RPGs) come from?

Catboys because girls stereotypically love 'em.

In my experience, girls put more thought and backstory into their characters, and become more attached to their characters than guys do. This ends up with that character getting played in a safe manner, less 'run up and hit with my sword' and more negotiating. It's more of a protection thing, I think.

Just my 2 cents.

If there's any stereotype about ca/tg/irls it's that they're crazy hambeasts who are down to fuck after playing a game with their half angel, half catboy pretty boys who are loved by everyone for no reason.

And that's not anymore accurate than That Guys are for the entire male /tg/ population.

The idea is that they're more interested in fluff than crunch because it's like collaborative fanfiction. That doesn't make them better at roleplaying anymore than it makes a rollplayer actually good at making a character build. In fact, it often results in mary sue characters and related shit. It's more That Girl behavior than standard female player behavior though.

Same place where gamer girl stereotypes on TV come from: a stupid sense of fairness between the genders.

If there's a gamer guy in a show, he's going to be awkward, Hollywood plain and nerdy. If there's a gamer girl in a show, she's going to be smart, attractive and competent. Because if a woman does something in a male dominated hobby, she must be better than the men.

The reality is that men and women tend to be about as prone to unpleasantness and incompetence as each other. They're just prone to different brands of unpleasant incompetence.

Why is that I have no idea, that said it really does not matter and stupid as fuck people can be found anywhere regardless of their genitals

>> No.21194903

Honestly, I think the stereotype comes from girls not knowing the rules. That sounds sexist, but hear me out:

Most girls I've played with weren't very interested in the crunch at all. As a result, their characters tended to be weaker and not have as clear a focus. Because I'm most used to seeing non-optimal choices made for roleplaying reasons, I tend to assume that this was their justification. Thus, weaker characters generally make me think the player is roleplaying better.

It comes from two things:
1. The relentless faggotry of hams who claim that their shitty acting is what role-playing actually means, despite the fact that their characters have no consistent psychology. (i.e. Their characters will do whatever is "dramatic" or "good" for the "story".)
2. The tendency of chicks from drama & theater sports to get recruited into RPGs.

>> No.21195045

I've known two awesome female RPers. The rest basically make a special snowflake character and when the spotlight isn't on them they kinda drop out. They're more interested in their story than the collaborative story. One I know in particular always drops a fucking novel of her character's backstories when the rest of us turn in a sheet with our character's three biggest character shaping moments and a plot hook or three to go along with it.

In defense of the latter, she prefers playing Magic because it's "faster". But then in offense, she has more than one deck specifically designed to draw the game out until the only win condition is for everyone to drop out.

> Woman 1: Hambeast playing a lesbian psychic elf princess who was exiled for being gay, and clearly not for her 7 charisma. Spends all day drawing terrible art in artbook.

> Woman 2: Literally insane. Weapons-grade Aspergers unsanctioned by the IAEA. Showed up at my home at 11:30 PM to ask if she was weird. When I told her I wasn't ready to have guests because the room wasn't clean, she said "that's creepy" and unhinged her jaw.

> Woman 3: Midget with whining, grating voice. Think Gilbert Gottfried but smaller and less endearing. Didn't interact with other players except to swear at them. Played a Rogue and tried to tank an adult dragon, then started crying when she got burned to a cinder. Passive-aggressive and nasty.

> Woman 4: The Entity. The Entity has no sense of empathy. The Entity does not know of forgiveness. The Entity knows not mercy or basic hygiene. Sends me nasty letters about favoritism in "awarding" items when they're on the table for the party to decide who picks them up. Wears inappropriate clothing (think skirts slit up to crotch, bra with only one working pad) to games despite being fat and ugly and horrible.

> Women 5-6: Okay.

All in all I've had one THAT GUY and four THAT GIRLS. And the majority of my groups have been male. Women are just as awful as men at the table. Anyone who tells you differently is a neckbeard trying to get laid.

>> No.21195492

My experience with female gamers so far:
>Friend's girlfriend who would get confused at the table and either try to skip her turn or just do the same attack over and over. Outside of combat, she'd be so inactive that her character stopped ever existing without having any impact on the story.

>Fat girl who'd play childish characters who would waste the GM's time with silly side distractions like, "my character is going to the zoo to talk to penguins!" that would take *HOURS*. She'd also show up late and fall asleep at the table because she couldn't manage her basic life shit at all.

>Other fat girl who came to game just to talk and gossip with the other players because she had no social life outside of our one weekly session. Played characters so uninvolved that people forgot she was even part of the game.

>nWoD girl who loved games with complex social drama and ran one of the best Vampire games I've ever played in. Generally a good roleplayer overall.

>Fat, older, single mother who couldn't organize a group of adults, let alone run a game where more than one person was expected to interact at a time.

Here's the thing with all of that.. All my male friends who roleplay also range from total flakes, to absolute bros, to THAT GUYs, to seat fillers who barely know which die to roll.

Like others have pointed out, gender is not the issue. People are people and that means that they can suck in a wide variety of different ways. Some are good at roleplaying, some aren't. Saying "All men" or "all women" is retarded.

The ladies I play with act like their character is a puppet rather than something to roleplay. Think of it as a cross between the Sims and a kid with a magnifying glass lighting ants on fire.

They also sit around and seem to wait for their options /v/ style to be handed to them vs. taking advantage of the perks of anything-goes tabletop freedom.

Also extremely fucking competitive and greedy in-game. There is no party mentality at all, just like random people on the same boat ride.

Look dipshit, I'll spell it out
The guy fucking said that women are better than men baseline. that means that if you gave women a bunch of resources to stat themselves and men a bunch of resources, the woman would have more
He also said that men are way better than women at specialization, that means that on those character sheets, even though the woman has more points, the man has noticeably more points invested in some particular gimmick, like wizarding, or skulking around like a criminal, or beating the shit out of everything with valor.

True?
False?

Op was asking for opinions on stereotypes like. He didn't stated that it was his opinion or let it implied in any way. He shows however that he's a newfag, both for asking this question and for not knowing this stereotype has been debunked many times. I see no intentional trolling here; it might as well be though, given the rants.

I have heard this shit three or four times before, as women are supposed to have more empathy because of their biologically superior understanding of social dynamics,
>they SHOULD be better roleplayers, but this is bullshit.

Girls who roleplay aren't in an open social situation, they're using their imagination to live in a simulated social environment. It wouldn't make much of a difference except they intuitively realize they can be whatever they want and break the setting using its own rules. This will lead to one of three scenarios:

-Egotistical girls will try to be mary sue somehow, or coerce the table unto doing their will from a subconscious level of thought; as they're not really interacting, empathy losses all significance because it's no longer useful, so it's discarded in favor of a self rewarding, short term approach.
>Example, stereotypical evil hambeast playing vampire.
-Girls who aren't egotistical much but don't know how to play, will try to able everything for everyone forever. You'll find them in the most grimdark fucked up setting trying to speak with radioactive rats and butcher rabbits, coloring flowers and frolicking. They may cry when things go in unexpected routes because they still see this as an opportunity to make their wishes come true. They might win the badass, rough player to their side, and might be cool to have in your table, note that these two tend to exclude one another.
>Example: Sisbard (female counterpart of brobard) in D&D, Druid, Robin Hood Scum.

-Girls who are deep and experienced enough to understand their shit; these ladies are sculptors of worlds the DM gives them and know very well that the characters are different from themselves. They use the rules to create, not to constraint. If anyone, they might have inspired the myth, and often surprise themselves by how real their acting is; but if too fueled by their success, they too may fall in sentimentalism, self insertion, and other vices.
>Example: SOME psions, charisma based amazons, mortals played right in WOD, guardswomen, and pic somewhat related. (for obvious reasons it's not a perfect example)

Created such a setting once before, but it was a dangerous setting, too.

Catgirls living on a tropical island where an old lab stood overgrown. They spent their days sunning themselves and forming temporary raid bands to overpower others and take their food, but they also had to watch for other horrors on the island. Escaped horrific creatures preyed on them. The laboratory was filled with violent, murderous ghosts. And the sea caves (where many chose to make their homes) were prone to flooding and drowning them.

It was a fun game.

I'm guessing. If it's an asteroid of common table salt (NaCl), as it dissolves it'd release a bunch of chlorine ions into the water, which somebody commented on how chlorine is why the water would be so clean looking. CaCl(2) would also do the trick, or any chloride salt, if my hypothesis is correct.

The next question though is would such an asteroid exist?

Wow, that actually makes pretty much everything make sense, good job with that. Salt asteroid is the kind of thing you can assume to exist anyway. Especially for a setting that doesn't need to worry about any sort of authentic representation of space.

>> No.21205489

>>21205467
Can't see how it wouldn't, but an asteroid made of such material isn't exactly common.

Other problems that so much salt might cause, though, is that salt water promotes rust and all sorts of other chemical degredation. The buildings would fall apart faster, and it'd probably also kill off a lot of the plants.

Although, one method of purifying salt water involves boiling it, leaving behind reformed salt crystals as the water can no longer keep the ions that made up the salt apart.

So if there's a creature that adapted to use salt in it's physiology somehow, that could explain why so many creatures are dead, yet the buildings haven't been completely eradicated.

Silicon based life forms might be likely to use salt or some other metals and metaloids as nutrients. So the oceans are filled with rock-monsters, but in order to have silicone based life, we need a lot of silicon, and my knowledge of basic chemistry fails me as to how many sources of silicon naturally exist. (Though, we could also have had some silicon in the asteroids that caused the catastophe)

Incidentally, I think CATastrophe would be a good name for this setting.

Yeah, my brain failed me for a little bit; sand is silicon dioxide, as well as quartz.

So if we assume that silicon-life/rock-monsters come into being to make use of all the salt, there's probably a lot less sand lying around.

Very shiny rock monsters.

So our cat-folk end up fighting shiny rock monsters in sunken buildings and keeping their corpses as trophies, since their high salt content makes them inedible.

Why can't there be some sort of fish or birds that have adapted to life in what amounts to a swimming pool? Something has to eat sea sponges. Nature tends to not let silly things like extinction events get by that easily.

Green plants means insects. Insects can be fed upon by birds, which fowl make up the other half of mundane cat's primary diet. (They were also carnivores, but becoming humanoid could have let them become more omnivorous like us)

Oddly enough, I also imagine the cat-folk liking human age energy drinks. Fish and fowl are primary parts of a cats diet because they are rich in the nutrient taurine; without taurine, cats go blind. In humans, taurine isn't necessary, but is believed to aid in muscle regeneration, which is why it's included in energy drinks.

Energy drinks are probably a luxury item brought back from scavengers.

Man, this fucking picture. I played a catfolk inspired by Ornstein the Dragonslayer from Dark Souls, and his acrobatics score got high enough for him to be able to do that kind of shit fine in breastplate.

Imagine fighting Ornstein in Blighttown, right near the start, with all the drop platforms and then imagine him being able to transfer levels at-will

I dunno, but I like the idea of something like Reaverbots "living" in the ruins; plus, from a thematic standpoint, something that clearly isn't human (or perhaps even alive) makes for a better antagonist in a light-hearted setting.

Right, but if I recall the main issue was that the algae got killed off. It doesn't necessitate only having silicon based life remain.

Which would kill off everything that fed on the algae, and everything that fed on those things, and so on.
That's a huge part of marine life.

Kind of does, actually. Without a producer (here, algae) to be at the bottom of the food chain, all other life would eventually die out.

More to the point, though, we were trying to explain why the water doesn't seem to have much fish or other life in it. (look at the pictures) The salt was just a method of explaining this absence of life.

>>21205885
You're right; but I included them (and giant insects and spiders) so there'd be more of a variety of "bad" creatures that are clearly different from the "good" creatures.

Robots would probably inhabit more technologically advanced ruins, like ancient research labs, or something. (That is, they'd be a rare site, if they even existed.)

Some species might just evolve to focus on food sources supported by something other than algae though. Do we really need an airtight justification for nonsilicon based marine life when we've got kemonomimi running around?

That would work, but left over robots would also give a tie to the old humans. Maybe even lead to a greater plot then just GRAB THE SHINY!

Personal effects, old robot pets, maybe even the odd security droid or something.

Depends on how advanced humans got to before the giant salt ball hit Earth.

Takes some crazy tech to pull off gene splicing, I'm guessing. Gives animal people a question too.

>Do we really need an airtight justification for nonsilicon based marine life when we've got kemonomimi running around?
Could just say that not all humans died out immediately after the change and that some scientists genetically engineered certain aquatic species to be more tolerant to the new water.
Now there's less marine life in general, but still some "normal" life like the giant crabs as seen in the pictures.

Wonder if they'd make good pets...

Not air-tight, but enough for why nothing is in the water anymore. Rock-monsters exist because it makes sense that they'd drain some of the salt out of the water by using it as nutrients. (which would prevent the buildings from decaying too much faster)

>How advanced these ruins are really guides a lot of the setting development.
Most advanced tech would be unusable due to having been drowned in water high in salt content anyway, so the human tech level doesn't need to be really conservative at least.

>not everyone thinks of rape caves
But this is /tg/... Anyway, dolphin people is probably a bad idea. Unless they existed before the apocalypse, and were able to find their way into clean water lakes or canals. Hell, could even be that other kemonomimi made artificial lakes in-town and have expanded these ever since, allowing dolphin girls to swim alongside the roads and such, eating what the others eat. Isn't that adorable?

Could open up avenues for reverse engineering. The PCs might even be the ones chosen to improve life for the future litters of cubs, kittens, and puppies by bringing back old stuff,

Never enough tech to remake say the gene splicer that made them, but a desalination machine or something might be scrapped together.
