Little unsure of how to word this, but let's just call this a non-standard character thread.

I've got an itch ti discuss unusual character classes, job classes, and professions and ways they might be implemented, either mechanically or just hypothetically.

For instance, one of my favorite ideas would be Jester characters who use jokes, pranks, and various props to disable and debuff enemies. Pies to the face for blinding, tying balloons to weapons to disarm them, insulting jokes to enrage them.

Or Mimes that can actually create invisible traps and simple objects through a bizarre sort of Mime magic that makes their pantomime into reality.

Just throwing ideas around. I'm a little tired of the Fighter, Wizard, Rogue paradigm.

Well, you did say please.. So have a little more Harle.

It's not an extensive folder, but it's a rather varied collection that I've been slowly building up. If anyone has any more, I'd appreciate them. I'm looking for a little more variety than the standard evil clown cliche.

>Party finally corners the BBEG.
>BBEG steps behind a waist-high shelf and begins doing what looks like the fake stairs trick.
>Before Party can stop him, he's vanished through the floor.

Anywho, one of the things I've yet to see any RPG really try is a puppeteer class. Someone who can both control inanimate puppets as weapons, as well as taking control of others.

I imagine at low levels, a Puppeteer might be able to force a target to take a half action against their will, while at higher levels, a puppeteer could take full control of their target for a number of rounds, scaling towards indefinite control or even turning that target into an actual wooden and ball-joints puppet.

Now this one, I like, but at the same time, I'm not sure how to feel about it, since it's obviously weird, semi-fetishy Princess Jasmine fan-art.... But God Damn does it have a fantastic aesthetic.

Also, bombs. One of those weird themes that also gets attached to the Jester/Clown thing. I think a bomb-oriented Jester would be a lot of fun. So many tricky things you could put in a bomb. Tar, Grease, Sharpnel, Smaller bombs, Flash powder...

Couple years ago when I did the first Jester thread, I had the idea for a Juggler character who deftly disarmed targets and stole random belongings and bits of armor, then pelted their targets with them. I'd still like to find a system where I could try that out..

I've always wanted to homebrew some kind of Archivist or Scholar class that has some function to take and study notes on how skills and feats work and teach them to him/her self, turning them into a clusterfuck of preferred/conveniently available feats and skills, but each taken at a sizable penalty that would only be lessened or lifted via more studying. It'd basically slap a huge cumbersome learning curve onto the otherwise potentially overpowered versatility. That and the restriction that all learned skills can only be learned through notes, and unless the Archivist/Scholar just happens into someone's highly specific notes, that means they have to take the notes themselves, meaning they have to sit around waiting for other characters to use the same one skill until they can take and stack notes on it to make learning it viable. By necessity it would almost exclusively be a secondary class, or basically just 5 levels of dead weight in a lv.1 party.

It has a lot of bugs that need working out to be even remotely playable of course. Hence the "I've always wanted" preface to all of this.

Fantasy Craft has a class called the Sage which gains the signature ability of other classes and gets a whole lot of support abilities that make it harder for their allies to fail and easier for enemies to fuck up.

The big drawback is, despite their utility, they don't really have any combat abilities of their own

You'd need a system that has some sort of signature attacks mechanic, where certain actions are capsulated into their own little things.. Then the Blue Mage could learn and repeat those signature attacks at a reduced penalty or something.

>> No.20677835

WEll, Final Fantasy handles this in FFXI by giving each spell a 'point cost' and the BLU can only have <X> worth of points equipped at any time. So what do you do? One big zotter that eats all your MP, or a bunch of smaller, more rounded spells? Many other games have the techniques scale with the monster encounters; something like Goblin Punch as a low-level power, with things like Level 5 Death or White Wind as later abilities from more powerful monsters.

Also, not every monster in most FF games with a Blue Mage has a technique to steal.

Couple more interesting ideas to get the thread moving again.

First off, briefly mentioned balloons before. They're a fairly innocuous sort of thing. In an exaggerated capacity, a balloon could be used to fly or hover or slowfall. Then there's also the possibility of balloon animals, which could function as a sort of creature summoning, allowing them to twist and shape giant animals of different kinds to help fight for them. They could have a huge variety of different animals with different abilities, with the caveat that they only have a very very small amount of HP.

Another idea I had, which is still running with the circus theme because I've got clowns on the brain, would be Ball riders who roll around on enormous inflated spheres. In a sort of Dragoon style, they can build up bounce and launch themselves far into the air, smashing down on their targets with immense force.

awesome thread man i just started reading it.
Anyway i would suggest the jester to be a summoner. He would be able to summon whatever the fuck he needs like rabbits from hats or a sword out a ring. it the only logical way to explain their powers
Also how come Joker has not been mentioned?

nice at low levels he can sumon rabbits in the hat and knives in the steeves, At high levels he can summon an airship outof nowhere to svae his ass. evrything he summons have to be somehow funny.

OP here, back from the dreamlands.

I'd say conjuration and prestidigitation would be an aspect of many clowny-jestery type character characters. Being able to produce certain props or pranks on a moment's notice is the only way they could function in combat.

Perhaps it could even be made to work like a wizard preparing their spells. Each morning, they must prepare their various pranks. Pies to the face, buckets of cold water, balloon animals, and so on. Then they perform a little ritual and the items vanish, til needed later.

I've got a few more pictures from that set.

Honestly not sure how you would fit a clown type character into a mythological world like PotC.. It would work for something like One Piece. Heck, they've already got an entire crew of circus act pirates.

Before arcane trickster was thing in 3.5 I defined my own as a class for rping with a roguish guy on my table. We ended up bad because he was an asshole, but his class building ideas were good.

At an incredibly slow rate this class wouldn't gain spells, but spell like abilities; at low levels the class could use low level abilities two or three times a day, at mid levels still low levels spells but some cantrips were permanent and free to cast; at high levels mid levels spells could be used 5 or 6 times a day.

If you sacrificed the feats they could be cast with still/silent metamagic feats without increasing the level slots.
They couldn't be direct damage spells, didn't get sneak attacks from its rogue base and the highest sp "jokes" were lv 5, and he forfeited use of armor for reasonable saves.

At epic levels he could "snatch" spells from wizards.
Even epic ones with an opposed die roll (wizard had advantage on this one, but still retardedly OP).
Stolen spells could be transcribed immediately to scrolls or redirected at the jester's leissure. The same he could do with thrown daggers, arrows and spell likes from monsters that targeted him. Even he could "steal" physical blows, although then nothing would happen.

Made a feat that allowed him to steal auras and effects temporally if he had wisdom and dexterity over 25.

When someone pointed out that maybe we could use that class to steal god powers we decided to never use the it.
>The idea made us all chuckle a little, however. Do you imagine Vecna's little cousin in the time of troubles?
