I rescued these dudes here off of ebay. You may notice the lack of details such as faces on them. That's because they had about 6 layers of thick poster paint on them in alternating layers of red, blue, and yellow (the berserker also had a coat of white enamel paint on top of all that). It took weeks to strip off all the paint.

I wish I would have taken a picture before I Simple Green'd 'em, but I recently bought some Ogre minis off a guy I knew. He apparently was confused by the Shrek movies because he painted them all green. And not a good green either, I'm talking a shiny car paint green. (I say car paint because that's literally what he used). Then, to make them look WAY COOLER, he put blood spatters all over them. Which unfortunately, do to a lack of painting ability, ended up looking like polka dots.

You'll be fine. And even if you fuck up your first model, you can always simple green it. Just keep at it until you're happy with the results. Everyone starts somewhere.

Here's a comparison for my progression. The one on the left is the first model I ever tried to paint. Middle one is the first one I was happy with the results, and the one on the left is what I consider to be the best one I've painted. The timespan between these models is years. First one was probably 10 years ago, when all I had were my dad's leftover testor paints.

Alright, thank you. The help means a lot.

One last thing;

Are any non-model paints acceptable to use with these minis?
I have acrylics, oil paints, and water color paints, but when I tried thinning them with water, it would bead up into drops and take the paint with it.

Do I need a coat of primer (considering these are AoBR, and plastic), model paints, or both?

>> No.20350497

primer yes
try and get model paints, craft paints kill detail

>> No.20350512

Wouldn't advise non model paints, it may not seem like it at times, but model acrylics ARE designed to be used with miniatures, also would definitely recommend a coat of primer, without it your paint won't adhere to the plastic very well and is at greater risk of chipping. That said, your coat doesn't need to be one fully uniform shade of black, in fact I recommend white or grey as it's easier to achieve brighter colours with them. I find that brushing it on allows for the most control, all you really need to do is water down desired brush on primer (or just any colour if you're strapped for cash) about 1:1, and in the same fashion that you'd apply a wash, slather the whole mini in a coat or two of this thinned primer. (Not only is it easier and quicker to apply in this watery state, but it dries faster, even with two layers, and paint adheres even better to it as it dries with a 'rougher' texture. Note, this texture doesn't look or feel different to the human eye, so don't worry about it being gritty or anything).

>> No.20350907

I use some craft acrylics. They're not ideal and i'm slowly adding model acrylics to use for fine detail, but i find if you don't mind doing several coats of some colours they can work well enough and provide some alternate colours.

Model paints are better though

Oh, be a little less humble for once. You did pretty good. A little bit more on the neck, maybe. And make sure you get the flash on the sides (visible in that pick on the termie's hand). A good way to get rid of side flash is to take an x-acto knife or similar blade, and cut the flash at an angle.

Here's an example:

(Flash) ==== \\ (x-acto knife)

>> No.20355113

Just for the record, you need a decent focal length to take pictures that aren't fucking awful. You also need for both the camera and the model to be steady. Put the mini on a table, put your camera/phone/whatever on a tripod or mini-tripod, stand a foot or two away, and use a fucking flash.

Horrible mini pictures make me so sad. It's so easy to take good ones, but nobody ever does.

>> No.20355130

I already got rid of all the mold lines before.

With a kitchen knife, but I did well with it.
I meant the pictures themselves, but you're right. I was hoping the paint could cover it, but I doubt it.
These are the assault on black reach termies. Their chests and head pieces are one in the same, which made this worse than it needed to be. I was following that picture as closely as possible, though.

I should be able to get ahold of that kind of sandpaper.

>> No.20355165

Also, is there a specific model of x-acto I should shoot for, or will anything work?

And, somewhat related, has anyone had any success converting the assault on black reach space marines to chaos marine models?
I'm asking because a friend who's interested in chaos is wanting to get the set, and we figure it's a much better deal than the battleforce if we can convert those Dark Angels models to kay-oss. The fact that they're probably gonna be snap-to plastic shouldn't hurt us slapping a bunch of bitz on them, right?

>> No.20355449

Any somewhat sharp knife will do, but I've had an x-acto snap on me, so you might want to get something just a little higher quality.

I've seen Blood Angels -> Chaos conversions. Shouldn't be too hard for Dark Angels -> Chaos. Just get some spiky bits and Chaos insignia and make them look good.

However, I suggest not painting blood splatters: that never turns out good. Unless you've read some good tutorials on that, and had some painting experience, stick with cleaner-looking marines (unless Nurgle).
